The castle, surrounded by its own curtain wall and towers, had 3 phases of construction between the 13th and 15th centuries. It later fell into ruin, but has recently been restored and is annually the scene of a medieval-type festival. There is also an Arts & Heritage Center.

People visit this site all year just to say that they have been to the site of Ath an Ri.
