The Neverending Story of Atreyu's Music

Atreyu is a post-hardcore rock band that came out of Southern California in 1999. The group of four was comprised of Brandon Saller who was lead vocals and played the drums, Dan Jacobs on guitar, Chris Thomson on bass, Travis Miguel on guitar and Alex Varkatzas singing vocals.

Atreyu, a name that is rumored to have been taken from the character with the same name in "The Never Ending Story", was not the first name for this band. It's original name, "Retribution" was changed sometime after the band initially originated in 1998. The name "Atreyu" is an interesting choice for this band and if the rumor were true, then the band's name as translated from the book would be "son of all".

Nearly all of the ideas for lyrics and music for the band are co-written by Brendon Saller and Dan Jacobs. The two band members' works as a team to create ideas and then re-join with the rest of the band so that everyone can have an equal say in the final projects, working together to sort out the specific details and create the final version of each song.

After many different demo attempts during the 1990's Atreyu released an early LP with on the Tribunal record label in late 2001. This commercial album was barely out before they released a full-length debut album on the Victory music label. Suicide Notes and Butterfly Kisses in 2001 with two different singles released "Ain't Love Grand" and "Lip Gloss and Black". The band toured non-stop after the albums release in an effort to support and during this time bassist Chris Thomson left the band and was replaced by Marc McKnight.

Atreyu's second album quickly followed their first; "The Curse" was released in June of 2004 and sold over 300,000 copies. There were two singles released from this album, "Right Side of the Bed" and "The Crimson". Following the albums release the band was back on tour supporting the album and working hard playing such shows as 2004' Ozzfest and the 2005 Warped Tour. They also maintained their own personal touring schedule during this time.

The third album release date in March of 2006, "A Death-Grip On Yesterday" hit number nine of the Billboard charts. This album generated three single releases, "Ex's and Oh's", "Shameful" and "The Theft". However, there was no time to rest on their laurels, the band once again hit the road for tours during the summer. Headlining at such musical venues as Ozzfest and the World Championship Tour, they played with many other popular metal bands that introduced many potential new fans to their special sound. Some anticipate that the third album may move the band away from their metal-core sound and feeling but the band is comfortable making the changes within their performances. It has been said that the band enjoys exploring with music sound and voice enhancements and modifications to create different sounds and images within their songs.

During 2006, big name recoding labels began to take notice of Atreyu and soon the offers began to pour into their offices. The decision was made to leave the Victory label and join Hollywood Records in early 2007. They closed out their recording relationship with Victory labels by creating an early best-of collection for their fans.

It is rumored that the new album by Atreyu is due to be released sometime in the summer of 2007. Additionally, they have confirmed that they will play on the Family Values Tour 2007 with bands such as Korn, Evanescense and Hellyeah to mention only a few.
