Auburn vs. Tennessee: A Great American College Football Rivalry

Ranked #11,680 in Sports & Recreation, #280,628 overall

The Tigers vs. The Volunteers

Auburn and Tennessee played every year from 1956-91. The 2009 edition represented the 51st meeting between the two teams. They didn't play from 1991 until the 1997 SEC Championship game because of the league expansion and the rotating opponents' setup. The two played in 1998 and 1999, 2003 and 2004, and in 2008-2009 before rotating off each others schedule. The two schools dominated the SEC in the mid-to-late `80's. In six of the eight seasons from 1983-90, either Auburn (1983-87-88-89) or Tennessee (1985-89-90) claimed an SEC Championship.

In 2000, A New Auburn Tiger Football Tradition Began: The Pre-game Flight of War Eagle

Beginning the 2000 football season, Tiger began a new and wonderful tradition in all of modern-day college football athletics by making flights high above Jordan-Hare Stadium before home football games . With Tiger's retirement in 2006, the pre-flight tradition has been passed to Nova and Spirit. Today, as Nova, War Eagle VII, or Spirit, gracefully circles the stadium, Auburn fans cry out 'Warrrrrrrrrrr Eagle - Hey!' as the symbol of Auburn University lands determinedly at midfield as an unwavering icon of the Auburn Spirit. (In the photo above, Tiger or WAR EAGLE VI flys high over the Auburn faithful at the 2005 Iron Bowl.)

1973-74

1973-74--Tennessee defeated Auburn 21-0 in Knoxville in a driving rainstorm. Tennessee punted on first down throughout the fourth quarter, infuriating Auburn coaches. At the end of the game, Auburn coach Ralph "Shug" Jordan refused to shake hands with Vol coach Bill Battle saying Battle refused to shake hands with him before the game. In 1974, Tennessee, reluctantly, made its first trip to Auburn. Auburn won, ironically by the same 21-0 score. Throughout the first quarter, Auburn fans chanted "Punt...Punt...Punt" whenever Auburn had a first down.

Tennessee's Peyton Manning threw for 373 yards and four TDs, while Auburn signal caller Dameyune Craig passed for 262 yards and a pair of scores.

OFFENSIVE FIREPOWER IN ATLANTA: PEERLESS PRICE & JAMAL LEWIS 1997: Wide receiver Peerless Price set career-highs for receptions (eight) and receiving yards (161) against the Auburn Tigers during the 1997 SEC Championship Game. In addition, Price scored two touchdowns on passes from legendary quarterback Peyton Manning. Also in that game, tailback Jamal Lewis set SEC Championship Game records with 127 rushing yards on 31 carries.

RUMBLIN', STUMBLIN' SHAUN: Shaun Ellis, 1998: Shaun Ellis was named SEC Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts in the Vols' 17-9 victory over Auburn on Oct. 3, 1998. Tennessee scored 17 points in the first quarter with big plays, including one from Ellis in which he grabbed an errant pitch and rambled 90 yards for the game's first score. Ellis finished the game with four tackles, including one TFL. Like this week's contest, that 1998 game was televised nationally on CBS.

He returned one of his three interceptions for a 20-yard touchdown on the first play of the game. It was the first time the Vols had scored on an opening play since Peyton Manning and Joey Kent hooked up for an 80-yard score on the first play of the 1995 Alabama game. All three of Grant's picks came in the first half. The broken-up pass came during a fake punt and also was a major play in the game.

2008 - Auburn (#15) 14 Tennessee 12

Auburn and Tennessee came into their 50th meeting limping offensively. Tennessee lost to Florida and Auburn lost to LSU the week before and both needed a win. With two great defenses playing against each other, victory for either side would come down to taking advantage of mistakes made by the opponent's offense and plays by special teams. Tennesse created the game changing play of the game. Auburn's Jake Ricks recovered a Tennessee fumble in the end zone, giving Auburn a 14-6 lead with 7:06 left in the second quarter. Tennessee would go on to add another 6 points in the game but Auburn's defense held on to preserve a 14-12 victory over the Tennessee Volunteers. It may have been an ugly win but any win in the SEC is a good win; Just ask Georgia(#3) who was beat by Alabama(#8) in Athens 41-30 and Florida(#4) losing to Ole Miss by the score of 31-30 in Gainesville during the same weekend.

Tommy Tuberville - Head Football Coach of the Auburn Tigers (1999-2008)

Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville, who won 85 games and one SEC championship in 10 seasons, stepped down as the Tigers' coach on Wednesday, December 3, 2008.

The decision was made after Tuberville met with Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs for the second time in as many days on Wednesday.

"The last 10 years have been a great time in my life, both professionally and personally," Tuberville said in a statement. "It's been a great place to coach and live, and we've had a lot of success along the way. I'm going to remain in Auburn and help the Auburn family however I can. I'm very appreciative of the coaches, players, staff and Auburn fans over the last decade."

really enjoyed your recollection of some great games, but would like to remind everyone of the importance of the 1972 AU 10-6 win over Vols at legion Field. Was the first big game for an incredible AU year. Tenn brought in the first starting black QB in the SEC, very similar to Damian Craig. AU defense out-quicked Vols offense all day, but Vols scored in 4th qtr & went for two so a field goal would win it. Conversion failed, AU fans exploded and 30,000 Vol fans left in a huff. This AU team was truly amazin! AU would come back to Legion field one more time in 1972 to beat the #1 ranked Bama 17-16.
