How Audi came into being?
August Horch started manufacturing cars in Germany with 5 horsepower producing horizontal engines. The demand for this vehicle gave birth to another model with 10 horsepower. Unfortunately Horch was released from his services by his employers and then he set up another company manufacturing cars under the brand name of Audi. Audi sales gathered momentum and reached such a crescendo that the original company where Horch was employed was taken over by Audi and integrated into the present one.

Audi changed hands
The bright heydays of Audi were numbered after the end of World War II when the company was virtually liquidated. The company was dissolved in 1948 but a year later was back on the roads with the support of financial loans. Then there was a takeover by Daimler and finally they sold it to the Volkswagen group, and has been a part of the group ever since.

The Golden regime
In 1960s Audi touched the summit of success and new models were introduced under the Volkswagen brand. 1980 was a landmark year for Audi as it released one of the fastest models in the sports arena - the Quattro. You could win every race if you had the Quattro. Audi attained its full glory with Quattro which had turbocharged engines and all wheel drive which was a hit in the sports circuit and due to its invincibility, the vehicle was banned from racing.

Between the 1980s and 1990s Audi came up with several other models with full time all wheel drive and a four speed automatic transmission which could be controlled electronically. These models caused an upheaval among the automotive giants such as Mercedes and BMW.

Audi still tops the popularity list
Today Audi is one amongst the top luxury brands in the world. It is known for its robust aluminum body which protects you from crashing due to the use of its new and advanced technology. The other models in their kitty are sedans and the new SUVs and sport coupes and these are stiff competition for others in the race.

The Audi A3 model is a luxurious family car which has given way to many modifications and is rated as one of the popular ones in the family. One of the impressive models from the Audi workshop that is worth mentioning is the Audi TT with 250 horsepower and an all wheel drive. The Audi TT is a sports car, produced by Audi since 1998 in Gyor, Hungary, available as a 2+2 coupé or two-seater roadster, and now in its second generation.

The development of the Audi TT began in September 1994 at the Audi Design Center in California. The TT was first shown as a concept car at the 1995 Frankfurt Motor Show. The design is credited to J Mays and Freeman Thomas with Martin Smith contributing to the award winning interior design. The TT received production approval with almost all the distinct and innovative design features in the concept remaining intact. The uninterrupted lines and seamless curves of the concept were a bold departure from typical late 20th century design trends. A previously unused laser welding adaptation that enabled seamless design features on the 1st generation TT, also delayed its introduction.

Audi did not initially include an automatic transmission option for the TT. A DSG (S-Tronic) became available, the first for a production car, in 2003.
