Aussies in America

Ranked #2,834 in Culture & Society, #62,725 overall

I'm a Kiwi helping all the Australians in America? Here's the place to come to find your food and mates who speak the lingo.

Are you a lonely Aussie searching aimlessly around this country and the web looking for blokes and sheilas to reminisce about kangaroo steaks, shrimps on the barby, Fosters and how many times you've beaten us Kiwis in sports lately? I'm here to help youse jokers! There'll be a sprinkling of Clubs and Societies, good places to shop for your favorite foods and stuff - and pies which don't necessarily fall into either category.

Check out my Kiwis in America for some rugby links. I confess to being a total failure in my knowledge of ball sports so there is nothing comprehensive here, however most of the club links have rugby, league, aussie rules and some cricket clubs.

Find an Aussie

Social clubs and/or places where your vowels are perfectly understood

There's quite a lot of social groups of expats here, often a combined affair, particularly of Aussies and Kiwis but also Brits and South Africans turn up too.
I'm listing ones who have good links themselves or would be able to put you in contact with a whole variety of interests rather than trying to include all groups and ones I just plain like for their friendly appeal!

There are also lot of informal 'clubs' at Pubs which promote or are owned by Aussies and Kiwis. Strange that. If you want a list of pubs on this lens let me know by contacting me or putting a comment in the guestbook.

Alabama
A Hunstville, Alabama group gets together for social times. Rocket City Roos They are also on Facebook under the same name. Not much activity there but some photos and I see some youtubes which indicate they do have some good social get togethers.

California
An LA group for Aussies or with an interest in Australia
Australians in LA (AILA)

See also New England below

Colorado
OzDenver. About 250 Aussies and Kiwis and Ring-ins get together regularly to 'shoot the breeze'
OzDenver

Florida
This group that looks alive and well is the South Florida Aussie Kiwi Club

Illinois
Aussie rules in Chicago anyone?. This looks to be a small group but the home website "The Chicago Social and Sport Club" has a host of sports and contacts if you want to join a team sport.
Chicago United Aussie Rules Football Club

Indiana
A group based in Indianoplis but for all the state. A sporting and social club -includes Kiwis and anyone who has lived in either country. They also have a facebook page and a ning.com community page Indy Aussies

Minnesota
The Australian New Zealand Association of Minnesota has a great site filled with goodies and fun events. Based in the Twin Cities since 1972. Good links.
ANZAA

New England/Massachusetts
The American Australian Association has a very good website with lots of news from Oz and other pertinent stuff. The Association has two active branches - New England (Boston based) and California (LA). The Association has a strong business networking focus but has plenty of cultural and social events. Its a subsription membership. Also has an intern program for OZ and NZ graduates.
American Australian Association

New York
There is a branch of 'Internations.org' which is an expat group where you have to apply to be member. There's a free and paid level. Looks good for business and social networking. Has a blog for the whole expat group too across the world.

Austin Footy

Washington DC
The long standing Southern Cross Club promotes friendship amongst Aussies, Kiwis and Americans. A good business and social contact group and there's always a rugby game listed. This site is now being updated regularly and there's a good amount of social activities, some organised by the Embassies.
They do charge for $25-$30 for a yearly membership.

NWAussies

Netball America

For a more comprehensive look for Aussie Rules check out the national association sites. The one with the best directory of local clubs is the United States Australian Football League (USAFL)
USFooty

Someone asked me for a list of pubs but it would take up too much space but if you are looking for Aussie owned pubs and cafes or want to know where any Aussie musicians hang out check out Australian Festival's website and look through their Aussie Directory. The pubs section is only as good as those who bother to register their business, so it may not include all in your area. If you know of an Aussie owned pub etc and they're not on, let them know to put it there!
Australian Festival

Business/Commercial Interest groups

Wanna make some $$$?

This is a select list of organisations or services that pertain to business interests.

The American Austalian Association has stellar events, membership both business and social. Lots of Aussie wine flows at the events and famous people turn up. Mainly in California and New England
AAA

Be sure to check out if there is a ANZACC (Australian New Zealand American Chamber of Commerce) near you. They often are a great source of social events too. The Chicago chapter has a comprehensive list of regional chapters
ANZACC Midwest

There is also the similarly named Australian-American Chamber of Commerce. The one listed here is in San Francisco. The site appears to be a little out of date so I wouldn't turn up to an event without contacting first. Has some comprehensive links including links to other chapters and similar societies and clubs.
AACC

Advance: Global Australian is a worldwide network hosting events and developing Australian commercial interests. Click on the link, look around the site, then look in Local Chapters and you'll find several active chapters in the USA. Some interesting social gatherings are also listed.

These guys have Emu Oil products and other fabulous skin - lanolin - and hair care products, Cynergy TK, stuff for blokes. Also NZ Honey - reasonable prices up to top of the range. Excellent gifts from Oz and NZ

Marmite Pantry - and they have vegemite! I buy it in 6 packs. They have a range of other products held especially dear by Australians. Great Service and a small operation that deserves some business. If you order anything please tell them you found them on my Squidoo site. I have a poll on my Kiwis in America Lens on Vegemite vs Marmite. Go visit and vote!

A tribute to the Aussie Pie in America

I haven't included larger online stores who have a wide range of goods here or the ones which will be in the first couple lines of a google search - just giving a plug to the smaller operations located in different states across the country. Some can ship out of their home area.

Craving for a real meat pie or sausage rolls in New York? If you live in NYC or are only a day away in terms of delivery these guys (the Down Under Bakery) might be just the ticket for a party.

Kanga Jack's Aussie Shack: America's first hand-held Gourmet Pie!
Based loosely in the midwest with a depot in St Paul Minnesota, these guys travel the state fairs and sports events. An Aussie Rules Football final crowd can consume over 90,000 meat pies in a day"

The Australian Pie Company
Seattle, WA is the home of these guys. You can buy direct, get them shipped or eat'em at the Kangaroo and Kiwi Pub in Seattle which sells a range of NZ and Aussie goods too including Berocca for Pete sake!

The Pie Guys
Not much on the whereabout of these guys but the former "Crikey's Pies" who have had to close down recommend them. Pies are sourced from Australia. Pity Crikey's has closed their site as they had a great source of Rugby Club links.

Great lens - I used to know a bunch of Aussies when I lived up in New York, though I'm not one myself, and I don't think they all live there anymore... :)

Aussie Books to read

If I find a good Aussie book, I'll feature it here.
A Fraction of the Whole A Fraction of the Whole by Steve Toltz

My review
rating: 5 of 5 stars
Saw this on goodreads and got it from the library. Grrrrreaat. Didn't have a particularly Aussie feel as the characters are so bizarre but its a great read about the weird and wonderful relationships within a highly intellectual dysfunctional male dominated family. Throw in a triad and national hero (due to killing sporting cheats) and you've got a rollicking yarn!.
