Austin Melgar's Biography

Austin Melgar is the youngest son of a loving, large family. He was born with an older brother, three older sisters and thirteen aunts and uncles. Austin was always a fun loving child, who somehow managed to keep a sense of humor to the end.

Austin's symptoms began when he first started reporting pain in his shins. Since he was such an active child, the pain seemed normal as he played soccer. Soon, Austin's pain caused him to limp more severely. Both of Austin's parents are doctors so they quickly realized that he needed to be checked out. After a visit to the doctor's office, the family was told that Austin was fine.

The pain in the shins went away, but a couple of weeks later, some small lymph nodes became enlarged above his clavicle. Again, the doctor's tested, and said everything was fine.

Within the next few weeks, the lymph nodes grew, the pain in his knees was overwhelming and a mass was found in his belly. After daily trips to the doctor, they evaluated the lump. The results were every parent's nightmare.

Austin was diagnosed with Stage 4 Neuroblastoma on October 3, 2005. The cancer had affected his spleen, stomach, spinal canal, all major lymph nodes, and bone marrow. He was malnourished because the tumor had decreased the size of the stomach which lead to less food intake.

Over the years, Austin was a real trooper through some of the most painful and horrible treatments in modern medicine.

On April 25, 2008, Austin took his last breath. He was brought home that day from a Detroit hospital in an ambulance. A prayer circle started around his bed and quickly grew so large that it surrounded the entire house. He passed peacefully that night surrounded by his loved ones from the comfort of his own bed.

This site has always been and always will be about Austin. Now that he is gone it is hard to know what to write but we feel compelled. Grieving is so much harder than we ever imagined. We had hoped to feel more of a presence than we are. Instead there is such a painful emptiness. Even though we are lucky to still have a family of six plus Caleb our family feels so small and we are always looking feeling as if we left someone behind. Fortunately we are all having up and down moments and there always seems to be one of us who is up to comfort those who are feeling down...
Life Story Network
Austin Melgar was an energetic, loving and strong boy who lived life to the fullest in the time he was given. Austin was a light of joy to his family and an inspiration to friends, neighbors, teachers, fellow students, and even strangers. He was mature beyond his years, displaying an understanding of God that adults can only marvel at yet he still loved to steal your nose and pour cold water on your feet in the shower...

What is Neuroblastoma?

Neuroblastoma is the most common extracranial solid cancer in childhood and the most common cancer in infancy, with an annual incidence of about 650 new cases per year in the US. Close to 50 percent of neuroblastoma cases occur in children younger than two years old.Janet Sassi, "Cellular Communication: Unraveling the Secrets of Histone Proteins", Fordham University, February 16, 2007 It is a neuroendocrine tumor, arising from any neural crest element of the sympathetic nervous system or SNS. Neuroblastoma is a solid tumor that most frequently originates in one of the adrenal glands, but can also develop in nerve tissues in the neck, chest, abdomen, or pelvis.

Esthesioneuroblastoma, also known as olfactory neuroblastoma, is believed to arise from the olfactory epithelium and classification remains controversial. Since it is not a sympathetic nervous system malignancy it is a distinct clinical entity not to be confused with neuroblastoma.

Neuroblastoma is one of the rare human malignancies known to demonstrate spontaneous regression from an undifferentiated state to a completely benign cellular appearance.

A disease exhibiting extreme heterogeneity, neuroblastoma is stratified into three risk categories: low, intermediate, and high risk. Low-risk disease is most common in infants and highly curable with observation only or surgery, whereas high-risk disease is difficult to cure even with the most intensive multi-modal therapies available.
