The Avro Lancaster Bomber

About the British Avro Lancaster World War II Bomber

The Avro Lancaster was the backbone of the British bomber command in World War II. Flying night sorties over occupied Europe, the aircraft's unique shape and distinctive sound made it instantly recogniseable.

The Lancaster shown here is preserved at RAF Hendon, the RAF's Aviation museum. There are two flying survivors - one in the Battle of Britain Memorial flight and one in Canada. The Canadian Lancaster is currently running a campaign to raise funds for repair as it is grounded due to propellor damage.

The Story Of Avro Lancaster JB659 by Steve Hanglands

The story of a Lancaster from factory to end

A 2 part documentary about a Lancaster detailing its construction, missions over 68 days in service and its end, down to the recovery and final burial of its crew in 2001. The narration is useful for giving an idea of the punishing schedule that Bomber Command had to maintain.
(1:59 in part 2 onwards is of particularly historical interest.)

Filmed and made by Steve Hanglands.

The Dambusters

The best known Lancaster mission of the second world war

The most famous film about Lancasters appropriately focuses on the aircraft's most famous mission, Operation Chastise. The use of Barnes Wallis' bouncing bomb to destroy two german dams is well documented and the film is mostly accurate.

To allow the use of genuine archive footage from the tests, the entire film was shot in black and white.

Not just for the aircraft (although it has some classic sequences and inspired Star Wars final attack) but also for the early sequences of Barnes Wallis developing the bomb and persuading a doubtful Ministry that it would work.

Depending on the version of course, viewers may run into various dubs to cover the name of Guy Gibson's dog, also used as the codeword for success in the mission.

Barrel Roll

The Lancaster was barrel rolled at slow speed during a test flight.

When a pilot barrel-rolled it at full speed with a full bomb-load during combat to evade a fighter he thought he was being shot with rifle bullets. On later examination, it proved to be rivets popping out of the wings.

To answer a question that came up by email about the Lancaster bomber's service ceiling and surviving bail out:

The service ceiling was 24,000 feet. The crewmember you mention is Nicholas Alkemade, whose survival after a free fall of 18,000 without a parachute was confirmed by the Germans who examined the wreckage of his bomber. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicholas_Alkemade

What a fantastic lens. I've seen a Lancaster fly accompanied by Hurricane and Spitfire. The sound of the engines was simply unforgettable. I've also been to a village where my German friends mother in law lived near the Moehne dam is, spooky, especially when I told her that I lived not too far from the Lady Bower dam in Derbyshire!!
