Avro Shackleton - bomber and maritime patrol aircraft

Ranked #3,203 in Culture & Society, #70,145 overall

About the Avro Shackleton

The Avro Shackleton was produced as an evolution of the Lincoln and Lancaster bombers. In service for many years, particularly with the New Zealand and Australian airforces, it was largely used for SAR and maritime patrol operations, and was designed for long range missions requiring endurance.

Particularly good in cold climates, such as the North Atlantic, the Shackleton was named after the explorer.

The Avro Shackleton was named after the famous explorer Shackleton. Designed for endurance, usually in cold climates, and long range and duration missions, it was an obvious name.

The Shackleton was developed from the famous Lancaster and Lincoln bombers by the Avro company (also responsible for the Vulcan V-bomber). It was a patrol aircraft, used for maritime patrol and search and rescue, but had been based on the earlier bombers.

It had a number of unique features, and went through three distinct redesigns during its service life. As a development of the Lancaster it shared a similar silhouette, particularly with the extended tailplane. However there were notable differences. The Shackleton was larger, and had contra-rotating propellors. Driven by four Rolls Royce Griffon engines, each engine drove two propellors mounted in front of it, which turned in opposite directions.
