Awareness Gifts

In today's advanced medical climate, cures for some of the world's most life-threatening diseases seem a heartbeat away. That it is why it is so important for all of us to do what we can in order to promote fund raising and donations for research. The latest trend in such promotion is awareness jewelry. An effective medium of fashion-forward charity work, awareness jewelry offers a chic and cost-effective way to show you care.

Abernook is host to a vast selection of awareness jewelry. Some of the most popular items in the collection are those designed to increase breast cancer awareness, although we also feature products for diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer's, and Parkinson's awareness.

“In 2009, approximately 40,170 women are expected to die from breast cancer.”

What Is Breast Cancer?

Breast CancerBreast cancer is a malignant tumor that starts from cells of the breast. A malignant tumor is a group of cancer cells that may grow into (invade) surrounding tissues or spread (metastasize) to distant areas of the body. The disease occurs almost entirely in women, but men can get it, too.

“23.6 million children and adults in the United States-7.8% of the population-have diabetes.”

What Is Diabetes?

Diabetes PendantDiabetes is a disorder that affects the way your body uses food for energy. Normally, the sugar you take in is digested and broken down to a simple sugar, known as glucose. The glucose then circulates in your blood where it waits to enter cells to be used as fuel. Insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas, helps move the glucose into cells. A healthy pancreas adjusts the amount of insulin based on the level of glucose. But, if you have diabetes, this process breaks down, and blood sugar levels become too high.

There are two main types of full-blown diabetes. People with Type 1 diabetes are completely unable to produce insulin. People with Type 2 diabetes can produce insulin, but their cells don't respond to it. In either case, the glucose can't move into the cells and blood glucose levels can become high. Over time, these high glucose levels can cause serious complications.

What Is Cancer?

What Cancer Cannot Do PendantCancer is a group of diseases characterized by uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells. If the spread is not controlled, it can result in death. Cancer is caused by both external factors (tobacco, infectious organisms, chemicals, and radiation) and internal factors (inherited mutations, hormones, immune conditions, and mutations that occur from metabolism). These causal factors may act together or in sequence to initiate or promote carcinogenesis. Ten or more years often pass between exposure to external factors and detectable cancer. Cancer is treated with surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, biological therapy, and targeted therapy.

“As many as 5.3 million Americans have Alzheimer's disease; about 1 million have Parkinson's.”

What Is Alzheimer's Disease?

Alzheimer's Pendant NecklaceAlzheimer's disease is a brain disorder named for German physician Alois Alzheimer who first described it in 1906. Scientists have learned a great deal about Alzheimer's disease in the century since Dr. Alzheimer first drew attention to it. Today we know that Alzheimer's:
1) Is a progressive and fatal brain disease
2) Is the most common form of dementia
3) Has no current cure

Just like the rest of our bodies, our brains change as we age. Most of us notice some slowed thinking and occasional problems with remembering certain things. However, serious memory loss, confusion and other major changes in the way our minds work are not a normal part of aging. They may be a sign that brain cells are failing.

The brain has 100 billion nerve cells (neurons). Each nerve cell communicates with many others to form networks. Nerve cell networks have special jobs. Some are involved in thinking, learning and remembering. Others help us see, hear and smell. Still others tell our muscles when to move. In Alzheimer's disease, as in other types of dementia, increasing numbers of brain cells deteriorate and die.

What Is Parkinson's Disease?

Parkinson's Awareness BraceletParkinson's Disease is a neurological illness named after Dr. James Parkinson, a London physician who was the first to describe it in 1817. Parkinson's disease (or PD) is a disorder caused by the gradual loss of cells in a small part of the brain called the substantia nigra. The loss (death) of these cells produces a reduction in a vital chemical called "dopamine," which causes symptoms that may include shaking of hands, slowing down of movement, stiffness, and loss of balance. Other symptoms may include loss of facial expression, reduction in speech volume and clarity, difficulty swallowing, change in size of handwriting, dry skin, constipation, urinary difficulties, and depression. Because Parkinson's disease is a progressive disorder, these symptoms worsen with time.
