Stressful times requires forethought

Sometimes it may seem the event poses a bigger challenge than there are tools in you possession to overcome it. Inner reflection of your feelings and how you react to these feelings are key issues to dealing with stress and worry. The event is now at hand and confusion or anger will not provide a solution. This is a time to learn something new about yourself. Be objective in the face of adversity.

Stressful Times are Keys which Open the Door to Healthy Growth

How You Think about Something Determines What You'll Do

On December 31, 2006, the contract I worked on for the past seven years came to an end. My wife, who had been diagnosed with colon cancer, died January 5, 2007. I felt lost and alone. Thoughts of all kinds passed through my mind, most of which were not good and highly unproductive. By entertaining those thoughts I began to feel sorry for me, so I started back to drinking and cigarettes after several years of abstinence. It wasn't till I watched Oprah and her guests from "The Secret" that my life started the turn for the better.

The power of television and the internet worked in harmony to show me a better way of dealing with my situation. At this point in my life I can't think of anything of greater value to share with you than to reach out a hand as others have reached out to me.

Some shop obsessively, others like myself wallow in self pity, while still others eat insatiably when faced with a crisis. The list is too great to give full mention. All can be easily identified as non-productive because no matter what you do - the pain remains.

What I have learned through my studies is that it isn't the event that causes the suffering; it is the way we think about the event that must be dealt the decisive blow, opening the door to areas of happiness, peace and contentment.
  • Some Psychologists estimate that, on average, we have up to 60,000 thoughts per day. Think of those thoughts, if you will, as a freight train with enough cars to stretch a mile, as opposed to a race car. Which do you think will make it to 75 miles per hour in 6.2 seconds? It is ok to pull a lot of weight - we all do - but stress begins when we forget what we are working with and have an unrealistic view of how to achieve getting to our destination. Remember, you create momentum faster by releasing the nonproductive thoughts and that will not happen overnight. Be patient with yourself!
  • Some days I wished I knew where the switch to my brain was so I could turn it off. During these times, realize that all of your thoughts do not have to be focused on - find a good book or watch a comedy - laughter is highly therapeutic. Even at your lowest, I'm sure you can find songs that will uplift you in the snap of your finger. Break the cycle whenever possible and don't beat yourself up when you don't always succeed. Those times have their place in the healing process too. Use these resources like a highly trained master. And one day you will feel differently.
