My Story of Building a House

The House We Bought

In 2003, my husband and I bought some property with a little house on it. We bought the place for the property (2.8 acres MOL), not the tiny little house sitting on it. A family of five needs more space than 1032 square feet, so we decided to add on to that little place to the tune of 1700 square feet.

A project of this magnitude Isn't cheap, nor is it easy, but we dug a hole for a new foundation and got started.

Since my husband is a building contractor by profession and he needed to keep working to make sure the bills got paid, this project was something he could only do in his spare time.

When we bought the place, it was paid for in full; however, a month after the purchase my husband became ill and could not work. We mortgaged the new place to keep from starving to death and to keep the bill collectors away.

While he was unable to work, my husband drew the plans for the addition and got them approved by the county.

Following the plan approval, we went back to the bank and refinanced the house so we'd have the money to build with.

Construction started and went along pretty well until the bottom fell out of the housing market. My husband had no work to do except on our project. As a result we almost lost the house we live in now, as well as the one we were building. It was a good thing that we had materials on site when the money ran out; otherwise, Jeff would have had nothing to do.

Biggest Challenge

The biggest challenge when you are building a house yourself, is having time and money at the same time. My husband has built this house with very little help from others, and that is why it has taken so long to finish. He has to work to pay the bills and build the house in his free time.

Why I am So Proud of My New House

My Big Beautiful HouseTo put it simply, this house is much more than a house to me. This house is my husband's labor of love. Under the circumstances, the challenges we've faced in the building of this house, most other men would have thrown in the towel. He has stuck with it, doing 98% of the work himself, for five years. He's practically built this house by himself. He's had some help from others, but in an effort to save money and do something he's always wanted to do - build his own home - he's done it pretty much alone. Subcontractors don't come cheap. I can't complain, because my house is being built by the best there is.

Why has he stuck with it, even through bankruptcy discussions? Because he loves me and he knows how happy this house makes me. I can say that I live in the house that Jeff built. Even after having lived in the same place for 13 years, I am excited about packing and moving. I never imagined I'd feel this way. Thinking about it makes me giddy.

I am the luckiest woman alive!

Jeff and I have a 30 year history together and apart. We went to different schools together. Ours is such an amazing story that I have published a book about us. Forever and Always... A True Love Story

The House Now

Welcome to ALMOSTA RANCH

It has been six long years since we first purchased this place, but construction is now almost to an end.

The part of the house, in this photo, that is white, is the original house; every thing else is the addition.

We added a living room, four bedrooms, three bathrooms, remodeled the kitchen and turned the existing bedrooms (three of them) into an office, a laundry room and an indoor patio/library.

The house is now a total of 2832 square feet and will be comfortable for our two children and my mother and us. Yes, my oldest child plans to move back home. This makes me very happy since he moved out before the house was finished.

My husband has built this house almost completely by himself. A couple of friends have stopped by to help him with some of the two-man jobs, like the roof and cabinets, but other than that, he's done this alone. He is AWESOME don't you think?

Landscaping...

Ignore the scrap metal on the right of the photo.

We have now begun the landscaping phase of settling in. My husband has built a parking lot for his trucks and we've planted some fruit trees. I've been busy getting ready for flowers. We've also prepared the north side of the house for a lawn. It will be awesome when we finish.

The thing I like best about this part of the settling in is the fact that my husband, son and I can all work together on the same project and call it our own. While planting the trees, I told my son that in 20 years he'll be able to point at the trees and say, "I helped plant those trees." He thought that was pretty special.

Photo of the herb garden (fore ground) and the 6000 square feet we are going to plant with veggies. The herb garden is edged with rocks that we dug up here.

Some Of What We've Done Here:

We have drilled a water well and installed a new septic system. The whole house now has in-floor hot water heat; the water is heated by an outdoor wood burning unit. Jeff has run water and electricity to the rear of the property so that he has these things in his shop.

The wood burner has a propane back up. In case the fire ever goes out. It also heats the water that comes from the taps inside.

I can't wait to move in and finish remodeling the house we're in now. (We're selling this old house.)

We have apple trees and wildlife over there. The deer come up to the house to eat the fallen apples and we've even had a few visits from a bear. I can see elk from the attic window, as they graze in the neighbor's field.

I plan to have a big party, once we are settled. I think it will be a pig roast kind of party. Considering all of the ups and downs, financial or otherwise, we've had throughout this process, I think we deserve a huge housewarming.

Cabinets

I'm not too happy with the manufacturer of our cabinets, but I accepted them as they arrived. Jeff took more than 200 photos of the flaws he found in them, and the company still insisted that I pay full price on them, or wait four weeks for replacements. No they would not pay return shipping and I didn't have four weeks to wait. They'd already been installed anyway.

Therefore, I do not recommend American Woodmark for cabinetry.
We bought them through Home Depot, and they haven't been very helpful either. The only reason I accepted them was because the flaws were in places that most others wouldn't notice, like on the inside , back or bottom of a unit. However, $16,000 is a lot to pay for cabinets, and they could have reduced the price a bit for the poor workmanship.

Update:

I think he wishes we'd have done something a little smaller, but when a mother-in-law is in the house, small is not an option. We all need space.
I can't wait to be writing from my new office, canning in my new kitchen, and relaxing in my new living room.
Jeff has made a new friend there; a buck comes to visit him everyday. He wanders up to the house hoping that Jeff will toss him an apple from one of our trees, and when he does, the buck will happily stand there and eat it, then wait for another. It is awesome.

We have been living in this big beautiful house since July 8, 2010. As soon as I finish getting things put away, I will post some photos of my dream house to share.

Have a look Inside...

A few photos of getting settled into our new home.

A Year Later...

Well, it has been a year now. We moved into this house on July 8, 2010. Our old house is still up for sale, and we visit it often to keep the lawn and flowers beautiful. My husband finished remodeling the inside of the house so it doesn't even look like the house we lived in for 13 years. All of the drywall is finished and painted, the cabinets in the kitchen have been replaced and new counter tops are installed so that there is now a lot of work space in the huge kitchen. New floors are next on the list. At least for the kitchen and bathroom.

I love my new house! I even enjoy cleaning it. I've got three more bathrooms than before, but I am loving it. No more standing in line for your turn to pee. I really like the fact that my bed room is big enough for a king sized bed and I don't have to butt up against the wall to make it in the morning. Each of my kids has their own room, even though my oldest now lives in Denver.

My mother has her own space, which makes living with her a little easier. She has the biggest room in the house. Her bathroom is big enough for several wheel chairs. She doesn't use one yet, but I am sure she will.

Another thing I enjoy is the fact that I can put plants in every room, if I want to. In the old house I had 40 plants crammed into a single room, because it was the only place that had good consistent light. This house has windows in all the right exposures. I have plants in several different rooms now and they are loving it.

Our garden space is enough to feed the town, and it is planted. I've been busy planting flowers and weeding the garden this summer. I also enjoy the fact that I can sit on the deck with my coffee in the morning to watch the sun come up. I can hear the birds singing and watch the humming birds fight over who is next at the feeder.

We started a lawn! It is growing well in most places. There are some spots that didn't germinate, but that's okay. I know how to grow grass. The old house had no lawn when we moved in. It was a dirt patch with weeds. Now it is a lush green lawn surrounded by flower beds. I will have beautiful grass here too.

My husband says that this is not his dream house; it is mine though. He built this house for me. His dream house is only big enough for him and I. Ain't he sweet. Some day we will have our alone time. For now though, we have my mother and our youngest son for company.

We sure do have a lot of critters around here. Every day i see deer, raccoons, mice and even snakes. Our cat likes to bring me mice and snakes; he catches them and brings them to the house before he eats them. It is like he's trying to show me that he's earning his keep. And we had a fox visit too. I haven't seen him since we found the chicken feathers along the ditch. I hope old McCoy didn't shoot him. He was pretty.

Last fall herds of elk passed through our place. It was awesome to watch as hundreds of animals crossed our place to get to their favorite grazing spot. Sometimes they'd stop and lay down in the neighbor's pasture out behind our place.

The views! I almost forgot to tell you about the views. I can see mountains all around me. From just about every window you can see snow on the mountain tops. We can watch the fireworks from our deck. The sun sets are even more beautiful than I ever imagined. All the while, in the background, you can hear the water running in the irrigation ditch and the frogs and crickets singing to each other. It is so cool.

When Jeff showed me this place for the first time, I wasn't exactly impressed. I lacked his vision at the time. All I saw was a dumpy little house that was the size of a shoe box. He saw the house he'd build. Now I see it all... the ditch full of water, the gardens planted, the wildlife; it is awesome. I'm glad I let him talk me into the place.

Regardless of the rumors, my home is a four bedroom, four bathroom House on three acres. It is not a six bedroom home on hundreds of acres. We are a mile out of town. I can still walk to the store for a loaf of bread.

We all love it here. My oldest is now more motivated to come home for visits.

People Find Me to be an Interesting Character; Find Out How I Got Here...

My memoir contains the underlying message that women in abusive relationships can change their lives. I did it; anyone can do it. That the Law of Attraction is real; The main character falls in love as a teen and never gives up on that love; 17 years later she marries the man she fell in love with so many years before. Prior to their reunion, she survives not one but two abusive marriages and saves herself from a life of misery.

This is my life story! I'm sharing it with you. I promise that if nothing else, you will be entertained.

Forever and Always... A True Love Story

Forever and Always...

Forever and Always

One minute we are a busy forum posting place
And then Good folks post a forum and nobody notices.

Many of you will remember our old friend Trina.

Trina has been off writing her life/love story, she came here to tell us about it recently.
Result: I bought a copy (even here in the UK), what's more I read it.
No, love stories aren't just for the girls.

Trina's life has been sooooo different to my settled family upbringing and a little more recent however I found the book moving and a glimpse of a much tougher world.
Her book is called Forever and Always. It shows me, and hopefully you, that we all have a story to tell.

I thought I knew Trina. Wrong.

Trina is a strong and determined lady who has used her life to act upon her experiences.
Why am I telling you all of this Go to her forum at

That is exciting to build onto and settle in your new home. We moved about 5 years ago from a small house to a bigger house. But now there is this mortgage thing.

It must be wonderful to be settled in your new home now. My husband has been talking about building a nice home here to replace our 1120 sf home but I don't think it will ever happen. We're OK here with just the two of us unless one of us becomes disabled. Then we can move to our house in the city I inherited from Mom. It can accommodate walkers, wheelchairs, etc and has only one story. Thanks for sharing your story with us.
