BMW 1 Series - BMW's New Premium-Compact Car

BMW is introducing a new premium-compact car. The BMW 1.

BMW's new baby - the 1-Series

The new 128i and 135i

It's on the way!

BMW announced the release of it's 1-series to the states. We will get 2 versions of the 1-series (E-81 body code), the 128i and the 135i. A convertible will also be available. BMW hopes this will fill a gap between the 3-series and the MINI, expanding the ever-growing premium-compact segment.

The 128i will come with BMW's 3.0 straight six, while the 135i will get the twin-turbos added to it. BMW claims 300 horses from the 135i's forced air setup, putting 0-60 numbers around 5 seconds! This car should be quite the rocketship. Bimmer designers payed close attention to the cars handling characteristics as well, claiming a perfect 50/50 weight distribution.

Interior appointments don't disapoint either. Although the steeing wheel seems a bit 'toyish', the rest of the cockpit is true to that German 'elegant-simplicity'.

I was disapointed that we're not getting the hatchback version that's currently enjoyed overseas, but American's just aren't real keen on the hatch or wagon's. Perhaps in a few years we can see an M1 Hatch, now that would be nice!

BMW 1-Series Convertible

Bimmer introduces the 128i & 135i Convertibles

BMW 128i & 135i Convertible

BMW has released it's 1-series convertible for sale in Europe and the United States by Spring of 2008 as a 2009 model. Powerplant options will be the same as the hard-top variants, so expect performance numbers to be a little slower with the added weight. The 128i Convertible will be powered by the 3.0 inline six producing 230hp with 200ft/lb of torque. The 135i which will release a little later in the year will get the turbo 3 liter which produces 300hp and 300ft/lb of torque which is available from 1400 rpm! With its direct piezo gasoline injectors, twin low-mass turbochargers and air-to-air intercooling, the 135i Coupe accelerates to 62 mph in 5.3 seconds. while the Convertible takes 5.6 seconds. Both engines feature on-demand engine coolant pumps that improve fuel economy and reduce parasitic losses for increased output. Like the hardtop, the 128i Convertible will feature Valvetronic valvetrain management and aluminum/magnesium cylinder block construction-core elements of BMW's Efficient-Dynamics. BMW's 1-Series Coupe is rear-wheel-drive and has a sophisticated suspension system with an aluminium double-pivot front suspension and a five-link fully independent rear suspension made of lightweight steel. Like most of the RWD BMWs, the 1 Series features a perfect 50/50 weight distribution. BMW's Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) also includes a Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) function that provides electronic intervention to prevent loss of vehicle control. Both DSC and DTC can be disabled from the cockpit. The DSC system on the 135i Coupe is specifically designed for performance-oriented driving. This is apparent because the accelerator pedal has a faster response rate, although the electronic rear brake management is used to simulate a differential lock for stronger acceleration in turns, and BMW hasn't made any mention of a conventional limited slip differential. Double-helical ball bearings will be used for the first time in the rear differential, which reduces the amount of lubricant required in the differential and reduces operating temperatures. Active Steering will be optional.

Exterior design for the 1-series was inspired by the old 2002. Even the "Hofmeister Kink" is visible on the c-pillar. The 135's will get the M treatment with aerodynamic body panels as well as a front lip spoiler, and all models will receive an integrated rear deck spoiler. Tail lights are L-shaped LED units with adaptive braking technology which increases with brake pressure. Headlights are steering adaptive units with xenon bulbs and also include BMW's corona rings.

The interior is classic Bimmer with pearl gloss accents for handles and knobs and the controversial I-Drive system is available only with the navigation package.Leatherette will be standard on all models with Boston Leather as an option. The Sport Package, a BMW staple, will include sport seats with enhanced bolsters. A 60/40 split-folding rear seat is standard. Entertainment is made simple with i-pod usb ports and integrated controls. There is also a bluetooth interface for safer hands-free phone calls. Six airbags come standard with two front, two side, and two curtains.Look for the 1-series to hit showrooms this Spring. Although no firm figures have been released, plan to pay about $27k for the 128i and $32k for the 135i.

New YouTube vids on the 1-Series

2008 BMW 1 Series by Edmunds' Inside Line

For Full Article: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/AutoshowArticles/articleId=122531 With the new 2008 BMW 135i, the German company explicitly promises a return to its compact sport sedan roots. This rear-drive two-door — in 230-horsepower 128i and 300-hp 135i form — "will reinvent the niche that the legendary BMW 2002 created," says the company. Meanwhile, it also frees up the 2002's lineal descendant, the current 3 Series, to move even further upmarket and grow even larger.
