Feeding Your Baby

Helpful tips and hints for you regarding your newborn.

Issue: I am a brand new mother and very concerned whether my newborn baby is not starving. I am stressing about it. I am breastfeeding. He drinks on both breasts very well, but pulls away after a short period. I burp him and try to put him back on the breast, but without success. How would I know that he has had enough to drink to fulfill what his body needs? I am stressing because he cries soon after a drink, but does not want to latch onto the breast for a further feeding.

Advise: Not only did I experience that, but most of my fellow friends have gone through the same agonizing experience. I can give you some tips which I gained knowledge from my own experiences, as well as what I learned from other new mothers.

* After you have breast fed your baby on both breasts and burped him, and retried to feed, but without success, the answer is he has had enough to drink from you until the next feeding time.

* Once your baby is done with feeding and was burped in the correct manner where he has brought up the burps in the appropriate manner, you can be well assured he has had enough and all he wants to do after that, is sleep. You can well imagine how tiring it is for a new born to work so hard for his feeding. It tires them out and they want to sleep.

* I always adopted the idea of going with my motherly instincts. If my baby continued to cry after I had breast fed him, and he did not want to continue drinking, I knew it had to be gas and I needed to burp him even more. You can also rub your baby's back to soothe the uncomfortable feeling of having a burp which is reluctant to come out.

* You will soon know if baby is starving. Your baby will be crying out loud and if you try to latch him onto your breast and he does not want to drink, he is obviously not starving. There is then another reason for the outbursts of cries.

I personally followed the worthy advice my mother gave me, which I put to use and found that it worked for me tremendously. That is if your new born baby is bathed, dressed warm and swaddled correctly, had a good feed and was burped, they will sleep for several hours. If you administer this procedure and find that your baby is sleeping with comfort, then there is no reason for you to stress that he is not getting enough during a feed.

Also, it is of no use that you stress, as your milk is to be absolutely perfect for your son. So bear that in mind. In addition, feeding time should be a bonding time between you and your son. It is one of the most beautiful things that can take place between mother and baby. You can also look at it as time to sit down and relax with your baby. I certainly made use of that time for relaxation and to bond with my little one.

Even new born babies have their way of letting you know when something is wrong. It does not mean they are starving. Should you feel insecure about anything at all, it is best to phone your pediatrician and speak with the nurse, who will let you book an appointment to see the pediatrician, if she feels it is necessary. Remember there is always a light at the end of a tunnel!
