Baby Signs - Powerful Language
Tiny fingers - Tiny gestures
These are the tools your baby has to express her needs and desires. The brilliance of these tiny tools is evident in the fact that WE EXIST... SURVIVE and THRIVE!
Did you know that teaching your baby American Sign Language will use his natural inclination to communicate while fostering verbal language development? When you observe babies and toddlers it quickly becomes clear that their gestures bring joy... and also have meaning. They move their hands and fingers, touch them together and try to reach things. Dr. Marilyn Daniels, associate professor of speech communication at Penn State's Worthington Scranton Campus says, "Sign language has the unique capacity to tap into the natural exchange between hand and brain, optimizing the emergence of language in the child because of the physiological advantage of American Sign Language (ASL) over English."
Here's some great news... You don't have to be a fluent signer to have the ability to teach your baby signs... and you'll still have a BIG impact in enhancing her language development, heightening bonding and reducing frustration as your child successfully communicates his needs and desires in a language that anyone can learn easily!!
In fact, by the time you've finished reading this blog I'll bet you'll easily remember at least 5 simple signs that you'll be able to teach your baby today! And naturally, you'll find all sorts of resources about Sign Language for Babies
Sign THAT, Baby!

EXPECT MIRACLES!
Signing is FUN!
Visual cues help total comprehension!

Signing is such a cool way to communicate. And while there are certainly signs that mean specific things it's a language that is so alive and leaves a lot of room for creativity!
Check out this little guy
Now you might think he's having some sort of temper tantrum... but he's actually giving the sign for DINOSAUR...with his own dramatic flair! ;-)
And that's the thing about signing...embellishing usually enhances the sign. It's also important to remember that when your little one is learning signs applaud her approximations! Close enough is good enough. For you too!
So have fun and let yourself get into it. Release any concerns you have around 'getting it right' and simply let yourself feel the 'rightness' in the action. Play with it!
When my two oldest boys were very young one of their best friends happened to be deaf. He taught us all to sign. And we were very lucky that we were introduced to sign language by this very creative young lad. As we learned the signs he gave us for our names it struck me as sheer inspiration how he would form the first letter of our name and then either apply it to a body part or a particular gesture that to him... defined us. For instance, for me he would form the "M" and tap his mouth because he thought I talked... a LOT! LOL
I'd be remiss if I didn't share my highest recommendation with you. I can't let you go without mentioning Wendy Jensen's Signing4Kids.
The cool thing here is that Wendy provides SO much for SO little! In addition to her eBook you get over twenty videos like the one about Emotions below. Covering a wide range of topics ~ things like Lunch, Dinner, Colors, Clothes, Toys, Outside, Bathroom, etc. You really ought to check her stuff out and start talking WITH your baby not just TO your baby!

I've taught my sons sign language once they hit about a year and yelled at me too much...I got tired of it and not knowing what they wanted. :) They are now 1 1/2 & 3 1/2 and when they get really excited, they will still sign instead of or while talking! I think it's a great way to communicate with your child.

Hi Mary,
This is a good lens. I learned a little bit of sign language as a child when I befriended a family that was deaf. They taught me how to sign. I don't remember much of it now though unfortunately. 5*
