Your First Purchase
... and it won't be your last!
Okay, you've seen a few demos (maybe all of them) and now you're curious. You've got to try these magnificent little sticks of pigment for yourself. You've scoured the web in search of pastels and found approximately 27 soft pastel makers making roughly 4,892 sticks of pastel. There are fat ones, thin ones, square ones, and round ones. Soft ones, hard ones, short ones and long ones. To complicate matters further, they come in student and artist grade. If you're wondering what I use, I use only artist grade materials.
It's easy to be overwhelmed by the ocean of choices available. Fortunately, manufacturers make sets of pre-selected colors available. Sets for portrait and landscape are common, and some make sets available by color. Mount Vision pastels are available by color in sets of 25, and are an excellent buy. A substantial size, the color and texture are consistent throughout the line.
Wooden boxed sets are available, but they are priced considerably higher than those packaged in cardboard. If you plan on working "plein air" a boxed set isn't a bad idea. The rigid exterior provides ample protection during transport and you won't need to buy one separately.
I like Art Spectrum's wooden boxed set of 60 for plein air work. It fits perfectly in my backpack along with a pad of paper.
Half-stick sets are a great option for those just starting out. You'll have twice the colors to experiment with at half the cost! My favorite half-stick sets are made by Sennelier and Rembrandt.
Once you have a good starter set, you can begin adding new colors and brands to your working collection. The directions for building a pastel box just like mine (shown above) can be found on this page under Pastel Storage Solutions.
