Kick Start Your Bible Reading and quiet your nagging conscience

When life gets busy or something like an economic disaster washes out your retirement fund, Bible Reading can make the difference between peace or panic. There is strength in knowing that others have gone through much worse than we are facing and God was there for them. As difficult as it may be, rough times serve to free us from the idols of our hearts and refocus us on God.

Getting your priorities right puts things into perspective which reduces stress.

Do you feel like your conscience is bugging you to start reading again? Maybe you enjoyed your Bible in the past but your schedule doesn't leave time for a formal Study. Here are some ideas to help you kickstart your Bible reading.

Life's Busy, Where Do I Start?

How Can I Make It More Interesting?

A Bible Reading Plan For Busy People

1.) Make Time - Don't think you have to spend hours at this. You can take one verse in the morning and chew on it throughout the day. I bet you can even memorize it if you think about it long enough. The point is, get started even if you have to leave your Bible in the bathroom to do it!

2.) Pray before you read - Again, it doesn't have to be a long prayer but Jesus said the Holy Spirit would bring things to your remembrance and lead you into all truth. (John 16:13) He will help if you ask.

3.) Read a translation that you haven't used before. Yes I know there are King James Fans who will fight me over this but the Bible wasn't written in King James English. Ever wonder what people who speak other languages do without the KJV? Something like the Message Bible will get you thinking again. Remember, once something fresh stirs your mind, you will naturally want to study your Bible more. Don't put pressure on yourself for too much, too soon.

4.) Read a commentary to go along with your Bible reading. God had me write a devotional on the Old Testament book of Exodus. It's written from a human perspective rather than as a technical word study. You can get it as a free download. Why not start there?

5.) You can get the Bible on tape or CD and play it as you work or drive. My husband used to play it while we slept. He said it helped him to relax. You would be surprised how much of it sticks with you when you listen to it a few times as you sleep. Remember, your spiritman is awake 24/7.

6.) Keep a Journal If I am reading the Bible and God quickens something to me, I can write it down and date it. My entries may only be sporadic but because they are in a book, I don't lose them. It can be surprising when what you wrote 5 years ago speaks to your situation today!

7.) Join a Christian Forum. Search for one on the internet. There's nothing like a good debate to send you to the Word to clarify your position.

8.) Keep your Bible in a convenient place. That could be different places for different people. I keep one in my bathroom. That may sound disrespectful but it's a place I go everyday and I figure it is better to get some word in than none at all. Since I have heard God answer something I had asked Him while I was otherwise indisposed, I don't think He is too offended.

9.) Sometimes you have to take tiny baby steps, how about putting up a personalized inspirational poster? It's a great way to be like Joshua and keep the Word of the Lord before your eyes.

10.) Make a Squidoo Lens about your favorite Bible Story or Character. You will be surprised how much Bible time you log as you check your facts.

in reply to Mike Lim I grew up in a church that discouraged marking your Bible because they felt it was a sign of disrespect. However, as I grew to know the Lord better, I realized that as holy as the Word is, the Bible itself is really a tool. If we reverence it so much that we never use it, it loses value. I think that Jesus would rather have us wear our Bible out, reading it, writing in it and learning from it than to give it a revered place on our coffee table. Mike is right - read, read, read.

find putting in little notes next to particular verses to remind me of adventures and experiences where the word came to life for me. Personalize you Bible by adding quotes, making your own cross references, a possible analogy or appropriate story that fleshes out the principle or truth being conveyed in a particular verse. Then just read, and read and read ...

I found that sometimes reading a commentary was too much to do. So what I usually suggest is that you find a good study bible with footnotes. That way you get commentary on most of the difficult / interesting passages, without having to read so much. There are lots of study bibles too, so you can always get one that fits your personality or interests (e.g., archeology, apologetics, life application, "generic"...)
