Child's Play - Ant Stories and Puppetry

Ants are everywhere; they're even puppets. They're outside, they're inside, they're in books, they're in movies, they're on TV. Face it. You can't get away from them. We watch ants because they're fascinating creatures. We love them because they make great story characters. Ants have movie-star status in the insect world. They definitely have a place in the puppet world.

The classic story of the ant dates back to Aesop's Fables. The Ant and the Grasshopper is a cautionary tale. While the grasshopper had a high old time all summer long, he never gave a thought to the approaching winter. The ant, on the other hand, kept his head down and his feet marching as he stockpiled food. Sure, he didn't get to play the fiddle that summer or lay out in the sun. But in the winter when the grasshopper was starving, the little ant was fat and sassy. Ants are great teachers. If you're looking for a good story to start doing puppet plays, you can't go wrong with this one.

Getting into Character: How do Ants Behave?

Ants work. They tunnel, they hunt and store food.

If your're going to do a puppet story about an ant, then knowing how ants behave will add to the storytelling. Ants work well with others. They gather food. They build intricate structures for the benefit of the group. They do many things well that we humans often fail. There's a lot to learn from ants. Ants are everywhere. Spend a little time walking outside and it won't be long before you find an industrious ant scurrying through the grass and probably carrying some food. The easiest way to learn from ants is to watch them.

Actors like to use method acting to "become" their character. They get inside the character. Maybe you can't get inside an ant but you can gain a better understanding of how an act behaves. Children can use a magnifying glass to get a better look at the ants. They can try to tell them apart. See if they can figure out what job the ant is doing. Once they have a few ideas about the ants, they can begin to create their own stories. That's when the puppets come in. It won't be long before the puppets have names, jobs, and life stories.
Ants - Learning from the Collective
Humans have always looked at the little beasts - so efficient, so purposeful and yet so different from us - and puzzled over what they have to tell us
The Ants Go Marching
Ants are a type of insect. There are about 20,000 different species of ants.

Become the Ant - Ant Costume Hat

Every puppet storyteller should have an Ant Hat

Kid's Ant
So maybe you have the one child who wants to try method acting and "become the ant." Here's the perfect "red ant costume hat." If I would have known about this hat a few years ago, I'm pretty sure my granddaughter would have easily donned this hat and gone around talking to the toads and frogs and other creatures on our two acres.

For added extra, each antennae is adjustable. The fabric is red velvet and is suggested for children ages three to twelve and should fit sizes 55-56 cm heads (21.75 inches).

The Puppets

The Classic Black Ant Puppet

Insect puppets help with creative play

Black Ant 12รถ Insect Puppet (P8207B)
This is a realistic portrayal of a black ant. You've probably seen a real ant, maybe even outside your home, similar to this insect puppet. The legs are movable to help provide some realistic action. This is a glove puppet with a nice overall size. If you want a puppet that stands a good chance of looking like one of those pesky picnic-munching ants, this one ought to do it. Doesn't he look heroic?

Bright Red Ant Hand Puppet Calls for Attention

Realistic insect puppet - a potential antagonist in the story?

Ant Hand Puppet - Red
While he may not be fire-breathing, this ant puppet is red hot in the color department. This is another full-body glove puppet that is realistic-looking. The weight is about one pound. Like the black ant, the red ant's legs move. Best for ages three years and up. Now, if I were a casting director I just might consider this ant for the story's antagonist. Red. Fire Ant. Aggressive. Or maybe I would play against type....

Who Wants a Cuddly Plush Ant Puppet?

Bugs can be plush toys, too.

Ant Plush Glove Hand Puppet
Okay, maybe realistic isn't what you're looking for. This ant puppet is perfect for you. He's about 12 inches long and is a glove puppet. There are two holes for you to use two fingers for the leg and another hole for you to manipulate the ant's head. He's very soft, very plush. Any child will enjoy carrying this ant puppet around and even having a little cuddle time. He's a natural for storytime.

Casting Call for the Caterpillar

Every puppet story needs a caterpillar puppet

Kids Preferred The World of Eric Carle Very Hungry Caterpillar Hand Puppet
If you plan to reenact The Ant and the Caterpiller, you'll need a caterpillar as well as the ant. Eric Carle's caterpillar would make a terrific addition to your collection, plus you can then act out Carle's classic tale of The Hungry Caterpillar. Double-duty.

I surely do appreciate ants more as hand puppets than as little critters crawling around in my yard. Cute stuff.

This is a really fun lens! I hadn't seen these ant puppets before. But, of course, they had to exist.

I have not seen ant puppets before, but why not? You make a great point about understanding how ants work before before writing a story about them. Lensrolled to Ants are Amazing!

I started out as a children's librarian, so lots of stories come to mind where I could use these puppets. Of course, there's the song "The ants go marching one-by-one."
