Sweet Banana Peppers

Ranked #2,828 in Home & Garden, #42,219 overall

Sweet Banana Peppers rock

The Banana pepper is excellent for frying, stuffing and even eating fresh off the plant; This is an all around favorite; I like to stuff mine with a cheese or rice mixture, then just pop them in the oven for 15-20 minutes and add some hot sauce and yummy.

Start your Sweet Banana Peppers about eight weeks prior to planting in the garden,. The easiest way is to plant the seeds about 1/4 inch deep then place in a warm sunny window. Once the Pepper has a second set of leave it is ok to transplant into a larger container; I suggest creating or buying biodegradable containers so you can transplant the seedlings directly into the garden; Banana Peppers are tender plants so try not to bother the roots when transplanting if possible.; Plant the Peppers seedling 12 inches apart, you can plant alternate rows if you use the Mittleider method which I highly recommend as you know.; You can harvest the Banana Peppers after about 75 days.; It is good to prune/ harvest the Pepper once a week when they start producing fruit. This will insure a steady harvest all season long.

When using the Mittleider nutrients make sure to apply the weekly feed once per week on the same day each week.; Daily watering is very important also.; Once a Banana Pepper plant starts to wilt it means it has stopped growing.  No growth no Banana Peppers.

Quick tip, try eating a Sweet Banana Pepper right off the plant, rinse in water and go to town.

Where to plant Banana Peppers

Make sure you proide space between Peppers

Based on the Mittleider method of sustainable organic gardening I place two plants per row every twelve inches. It is a good idea to keep different varieties of Peppers spaced at least 20 feet apart. Next year I am going to alternate the plants because they grow so big side by side is harder to prune and harvest. This is a great problem to have.:)

No big deal if they cross pollinate you will just have to get fresh Banana Pepper seeds next year

If you want to use the seeds next year also consider planting a few Banana Pepper plants in planters away from other Pepper plants. Banana peppers are excellent for frying also.
