Does Obama's Pastor Reflect Poorly On Obama? a debate run by jeffwend

HERE'S WHAT I THINK

Barack Obama's Pastor Does Reflect Poorly On Obama.

Reverend Wright is Barack Obama's long time pastor at the Trinity United Church of Christ. In fact he even performed the ceremony for Obama's wedding. He is not just a friend, but Obama has described Wright as his "Spiritual Mentor".

Reverend Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr. has made numerous comments that come off as racist and separatist while he uses his pulpit more to rant his radical ideas than to teach God's love.

How can we take Obama serious when he talks about healing race relations when this is what he listens to at his worship service?

Does Obama's Pastor Reflect Poorly On Obama?

Yes, you're right!

olivefoto says:

Who cares if Obama is a muslim , there are many good muslims im a conserative republican and i have more muslim friends than christian ones , the problem is obama is a racist product of a racist church and a racist wife , and there are no good racists.

olivefoto says:

not nearly as much as living with a woman who hates america and has never been proud to be american

fefe says:

The videos of Obama's pastor are very disturbing.

JanaMurray says:

I could never trust an empty suit who gets funding from questionable sources and has a track record that is so bad!
Obama Video Showcase

jeffwend says:

You hit the nail on the head Alyssa.

Alyssa says:

Absolutely--it shows he has poor judgment. What's even worse is the fact that he has incessantly lied about Wright and his church. He went from saying they weren't controversial to admitting they were (once the videos were exposed). He went from saying he hadn't attended a hate sermon to admitting in his speech that he had heard Wright say controversial things. Obama--change you can't believe in!

bdkz says:

Yes!

sugarbear says:

He sat his ass in the pew for 20 years. If he didnt agree with the man he would have left the church. He admits this man is his spiritual leader!!!!!!! If americans are smart his race speech woke the sleeping giant like the Japanese did when they bombed pearl harbor. He just woke up white america.

Cinetech says:

After Obama's last speech, the words of Jeremiah Wright don't mean much. Barack will be the next US president.

badmsm says:

But not necessarily because of what his pastor said. It's the fact that if Obama disagrees so strongly with what Rev. Wright said, and he's as spiritual as he says, he would have left the church a long time ago. The fact that Obama has turned on Rev Wright so publicly after the media firestorm doesn't instill me with a lot of faith in his honesty, judgement or convictions. And isn't strength on those points what we are looking for in our next commander-in-chief?

jeffwend says:

Obama used this controversy as an opportune time to talk about his connection with Rezco, smart move as the interview on this was buried. Other wise, it would have gotten a lot more attention.

Obama's speech today did not answer one question. If a main criteria of why we vote for someone is their judgment, what does it say about Obama's judgment in not condemning Wrights messages before. He only does it now that he is under fire.

lens4Him says:

I thought Obama gave a good speech today and made some valid points. Whether or not it will repair the damage to his campaign remains to be seen.

He really needs to change the conversation - maybe he can get Mrs Clinton to release her tax returns and then the media will focus on her for a while.

SemperFidelis says:

The Bill Cosby link I just posted ran off to the other column. If anyone cares to read his speech, simply search "Bill Cosby Address at the NAACP' on the 50th Anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education" and it comes up #1.

SemperFidelis says:

I wanted to post a couple points in response to a couple I've read.

Regarding a country run by "rich white men." Every government in every society through out history has been run by the rich, and most by white men. United States is no different. I do not think America is any better/worse by being run by the rich. To the best of my knowledge, there has never been a governing body comprised of the poor (or even middle class, for that matter).

Regarding race. Oprah Winfrey had Bill Cosby and a professor (black) of a prestigious university (sorry, I'm forgetting the names here) on her show last week. Essentially, they said issues of race are coming from the black community who are reaching out in anger. Anger, because the break down of the black family has had a catastrophic effect on the black community. This, coming from a two well know black men, hosted on a black woman's show, with an audience comprised of the Chicago black community. All were in agreement with the two guests. If you care to read some of what Bill Cosby was referring to, see his address to the NAACP: http://www.americanrhetoric.com/speeches/billcosbypoundcakespeech.htm Again, all this coming from the black community, not me.

For the record, I think Obama should be held accountable for the people he chooses to be influenced by. Having said that, I really like Obama and would vote for him over Clinton on any given day.

citywidefire says:

Yes, how could it not. No one goes to the same church for 20 years and not know where his pastor is coming from. He can claim ignorance of the hate and vitriol spewed by this man who BTW has every right to say what he wants.

If this were a white candidate with a pastor who talked this way about African-Americans would there be any question?

lens4Him says:

You don't choose your family, but you do choose your friends, and in many cases your church. Obama could have disassociated himself from this church a long time ago - as in fact Oprah did - but he chose not to.

If Obama wants to be president for all the people, attending what is a self-proclaimed 'black' church seems to me to send a different message.

Obama has tried very hard to run - quite rightly in my opinion - as a candidate who happens to be black, rather than as a black candidate. I think this controversy is damaging that.

jeffwend says:

Very good point lifedefined, but I'm not running for president either.

jeffwend says:

Again, Wright was Obamas #1 spiritual adviser for 20 years! He was only removed from Barack's campaign after the scrutiny has surfaced. Now Obama is trying to separate himself from Wright as he works on damage control.

KimGiancaterino says:

Yes, it reflects badly on him and will probably cost him the nomination.

lens4Him says:

If nothing else it shows a very poor lack of judgment on behalf of Obama. He doesn't appear to be very good at picking friends either.

God help us if this guy ends up being elected president of the United States.

No way, Monkeybrain!

Mz_Mattie says:

Absolutely not!! I believe that people should go to YOUTUBE to the TRINTYCHGO and view the entire service in its full context. After that look at more of Rev. wright's sermon and you will see the true man that the news has completley demonized. He will not reflect poorly on Obama, and Obama was correct in supporting his pastor. Dr. Wright has been preaching for 36years with a faitfull congregation and full support from the UCC. He has spoken to audiences of White, and African american people. He has lived a life of service and is very concerned with the future of his people. Don't crucify someone without doing your research. The news didn't interview any scholars and people that have met and spent time with this man. Dr. Cornell west spoke at his retirement celebration about REv. Wright. When Someone (obama) is reaching out for a new message CHANGE...Most will oppose. Great Achievement always meets great opposition. I will still vote for OBAMA because i have did my research and I know the full story. YOUTUBE channel TRINITYCHGO..

holacubana says:

Since when does white America not use anything and everything to discredit a black man about anything. Think about it folks--your white Supremecist government yet again is manipulating the process in sound bites through Rupert Murdock's lil sound bite machine.
Fair and Balanced B.S.!

FamousMortimer says:

In short I wish our politicians would listen to more of these so-called "extremists." I don't agree with most of what Wright said but I do believe the anger that he and many others feel is real and I'm glad atleast someone in power listened.

LeslieBrenner says:

This is a non-issue. Obama has said he doesn't agree with Wright's inflammatory comments, while pointing out that Wright has reasons to be angry about racism and to voice that anger. Besides, you fail to specify what it is Wright said that you object to?

But since you claim that Wright reflects badly on Obama's presidential run, please explain why McCain's ongoing and full support of John Hagee and televangelist Rod Parsley don't reflect badly on McCain's presidential bid? Hagee has said that the residents of New Orleans deserved to drown, while Parsley claims the United States was founded in part to destroy Islam. And what about Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell, who both claimed we deserved to be attacked on 9/11 by doing things that angered God. Not only are their statements considered uncontroversial and inoffensive, but they're even invited to the White House to discuss policy. Please explain that to me?

Clairwil says:

OK! I'm not an American so it isn't my view that counts. I just thought I'd chip on how it looks from my part of the world. Being Christian seems to be pretty important in America. If Obama is a Christian at all it's habit and convenience rather than faith. I expect he thought being a church member of any Christian church would be enough.

Christians will see this as a poor reflection on Obama, atheists may like me take a more pragmatic view.

Reg_Brittain says:

I think in his speech today, Obama acquitted himself quite well. He has handled his "swift boating" in a way that would have served John Kerry well.

There is no way now that Pastor Wright's tantrums can taint Obama.

Christene says:

I don't think his Pastor's speech is racist to begin with. He's saying this country is run by rich white men who don't know what it's like to be African American. And he's right.

I don't know anything about him, but even if Wright is as bad as you say I do not think it reflect on Obama at. all. I've had many friends who hold opinions I do not agree with. Their views are not mine. And Wright's views are not Obama's.

LifeDefined says:

I doubt there is one person in the US who does not have someone in their family or as a close friend who has said things they disagree with. Maybe it's a close friend from middle school who occasionally has a temper tantrum, a rant that is just not Politically Correct. Maybe it is a favorite brother-in-law, while being a fantastic father and dedicated spouse has the propensity for spouting off at the mouth when irked.
Senator Obama has been very clear that he disagrees with and denounces the anti-American statements by his friend and Reverend. But he is also clear that this is a man whom he met during his years a community organizer, who was actively involved in improving the circumstances of the individuals in their community ? not just his church members, but the whole community.
Reverend White's message of love, community and unity brought Barack Obama into the church. Reverend White married him and Michelle and baptized their two daughters. He loves this man, as he should.
You can love someone that you occasionally disagree with. You can love and respect someone who has strong opinions and is prone to occasional temper tantrums.
The videos being shown as ?breaking news? are from 2001 and 2003. What are not being shown are the hundreds of sermons Reverend White has given about community and personal responsibility and conviction.
What bleed, leads and this is not news.
If there was a video of Senator Obama saying anything of these things any time in his life, then it would hurt his campaign. A person's friend and even his ?Spiritual Advisor? is not a reflection of that person's core beliefs.
I live in a Big Glass house and will throw no stones. Should you?

CarmenVj says:

Dirty Politics at its best with racial overtones. Obama is being scrutinized for the over views of his now former pastor through tapes, video. McCain supports two pastors for their over the top views. No tapes, no videos. No scrutiny. We still have a serious race problem here in the U.S.

Theodore Roosevelt stated in 1912:

" This country will not be a permanently good place for any of us to live unless we make it a reasonably good place for all of us to live in".

Greekgeek says:

I see your claims at the top of this lens, but the video is unavailable, so we only have web research and your characterization of him to go on. Your words are serious indeed, and inflammatory, but so far my web research hasn't turned up what you're claiming is racism or separatism. I've seen him arguing for compassion and inclusivity regardless of race, however.

I've also seen the original remarks that caused the hullabaloo. His wording was poor but calculated to make a point through shock tactics. At the height of the Iraq war, he recommended to his congregation that they not sing God Bless America when America was building larger prisons, "killing innocent people... treating our citizens as less than human...act[ing] like she is God and she is supreme."

In other words he was condemning America for the slaughter of innocents, for abusing her own citizens, and above all for supplanting GOD.

His shock tactics to make that point were inappropriate. But had he said Americans should say, "SHAME on America," I think he'd get a lot of agreement from many quarters.

The comments you label racist are (as far as I can see) the comments of someone who feels that racism is still rampant in this country, and he's angry about it. Divisive, maybe. But I am not black and haven't had to put up with what they have -- except that I've heard my grandfather, rich white male, say horrible, horrible things about black people in their earshot, and he's a Fed lawyer.
No one in my graduate programs in two different institutions except one lonely guy (who privately expressed feelings to me about it) were black. These programs required money to get into. Yes, inequities in this country still exist.

Obama's pastor has also said that America is being hypocritical to have bombed and slaughtered thousands of civilians in the past -- including Vietnam, which wasn't at war against us -- only to be outraged when we get attacked. I can sort of see his point, although I'd argue that terrorist tactics have escalated (suicide bombing) to a level that even our internment camps, torture of prisoners, and mass bombing of civilians has never reached. Still, America's moral high ground is eroded by its own actions, which is why our allies who at first were overwhelmingly supportive of it after 9/11 have backed away from us.

For just about everything Obama's pastor has said, I feel like responding, "you carry your point too far and use language that's going to blind people to your argument, but I see your point."

Nevertheless, Obama has repudiated Wright, condemned his sermons and officially removed him from his campaign.

I'm sure he'll still be hurt by this, but quite frankly, I think the situation is less black and white than the media -- or Wright -- is claiming it is.

Reg_Brittain says:

The simple answer to your question may -- may -- be yes. But let's consider the subtext -- Obama = bad, McCain = good.

McCain is endorsed by the anti-Catholic Rev. Hagee, and as of this week, another pastor who makes the utterly dubious claim that our nation was founded in part to wipe out Islam in the name of Christ. I wonder what actual founders Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Payne, and George Washington (the two former being avowed deists, and the latter being a deist as per Jefferson's writings) would think about that!

McCain sought and accepts the endorsements of the alleged holy men who have weighed in for him.

As for Obama -- simply -- as per a Slate article, "Obama has likened Wright to a kooky but lovable uncle whose words the family doesn't heed." Further -- further! -- he did not court Farrakhan and has DENOUNCED his endorsement.

The opinion expressed in this lens is a distortion of reality.
