Barbara Stitt's Life Work: The Food-Behavior Connection
by Carmel Aaron
Could you ever in your wildest dreams imagine that food and nutrition could have an impact on behavior. I mean that it could actually make the difference between having a happy healthy life or being a convicted criminal. That's quite a difference. Of course most of us fall somewhere in between these two very different extremes.
Please read on to see if you find the proof you need to believe this statement
Barbara and Paul Stitt gave of themselves They put their money where there mouths were. They began to lead the way in showing us how to care for our children in a loving and nutritional way.
Recently Barbara was kind enough to spend quite a bit of her time talking with me, and gave me a great interview. Here's just some of what we covered:
Barbara Reed Stitt's (PhD), life has been exemplary. She is a former Chief Probation officer, former President and Co-owner of Natural Ovens Bakery (sold in 2007), the Author of Food & Behavior-A Natural Connection; Nutritional Guidelines for Correcting Behavior, Impact of Fresh Healthy Foods on Learning and Behavior (DVD) and Roadmap to Healthy Foods in Schools. (This is a guide for schools to improve children's lives, health and learning ability.) I'd say she has quite a legacy behind her, and she is still actively promoting healthy foods and good nutrition in schools.
One additional thing I would like to mention as I learned in her interview is: she has just received a Life time Achievement award from the Community Addiction Recovery Association (CARA) in Sacramento, CA. By applying the same formula in working with people with addictions, over a 10 year period of time they had an 87% success rate - providing a savings for the Sacramento County of $20,000,000. This did more than save money. The health and nutrition program also saved lives.
Do you believe that eating healthy is not cost effective? Do you feel that it is too expensive? I beg to differ with you. Evidently CARA does too. So do the schools and the children in the schools that have implemented the Stitt's Nutritional program.
The Appleton, WI Alternative School program is featured in the movie "Super Size Me". After implementing this program the school's administrator reported zero dropouts, expulsions, vandalism, drugs, weapons and suicides. That is a huge savings in money, but the saving is so much more than financial. Their students are healthier, happier and capable of focusing, learning and getting along better with their families, classmates and their teachers. Isn't this what we want for our children?

Wow, do you think this just might help our children to have a real future?

Have you Ever Wondered If There was a Connection Between Food and Behavior? See the Results
Barbara Reed Stitt, author of Food and Behavior, A Natural Connection had learned about the profound effects of food in the unlikely position of probation officer. The first thing she did with anyone who came under her care was to change their diet. Time and time again their lives turned around.
Appleton Central Alternative Charter High School (ACA) opened its doors in February of 1996 to give individualized attention to students struggling in the conventional school settings. Despite this close attention, students behavioral problems continued to be extremely problematic.
Barbara Stitt and her husband Paul, a biochemist, approached their local school (ACA) with an offer that was as unusual as it was generous. Take out the vending machines, take out the processed foods, and feed the students fresh, whole, nutritious food and watch their behavior improve. And the Stitts will pay the bill. In fact, since the Stitts owned Natural Ovens, a whole foods bakery, their company would send the school plenty of its own healthy fare AND place one of their own cooks on site at the school's kitchen.

Appleton Central Alternative High School is, well, an "alternative school"; a place where problem students end up. Greg Bretthauer, the dean of students, was offered the job prior to the program and found the students "rude, obnoxious, and ill-mannered." The school had so many problems with discipline and weapons violations that a police officer was recruited to be on the staff.
The new program had an instantaneous effect. In the state of Wisconsin, each school is required to file a report each year detailing the number of students who have dropped out, been expelled, committed suicide, or got caught using drugs or carrying weapons. Since the start of the program, the numbers at ACAHS have been the same each year, zero! This would be a stat that any public or private school would be proud of. For an alternative school, it's nothing short of astonishing.
Appleton Central Alternative High School serves both a nutritious breakfast and lunch. There are no vending machines within the school and no carry-in food and/or beverages are allowed. In addition, ACAHS offers bottled water and encourages students to carry water bottles. Ninety-five per cent (95%) of Central students participate in the nutrition program.

Barbara Stitt Proves Beyond a Shadow of a Doubt that Food Affects Behavior.
A Great Partnership-Barbara and Paul Stitt

When I was young I, Carmel Aaron, was very fortunate to have excellent health. This was due to my parents who provided healthy whole foods and very little in the way of sweets or junk. They also kept me busy with chores and encouraged exercise.
I deviated for awhile, developed low blood sugar and felt pretty sick. I I didn't like how that felt at all. It took a while but, I got back on track again.
Barbara didn't have a great start like I did. She was very unhealthy when she was young. There were several 'diagnoses', but finally with reading a book, "Look Younger & Live Longer" by Gaylord Hauser, she realized it was basically her diet that was causing the problems.
She followed the suggestions in Hauser's book and within three months all of the debilitating symptoms had disappeared. She was able to get well,. Then, by using this same material in her work as Chief Probation Officer she helped so many others and assisted the majority of those she worked with to be able to lead good, clean crime free lives with an actual future before them. Have you ever thought so much could be accomplished with food and a healthy diet?
In other words Barbara Stitt showed beyond a shadow of a doubt that Food and Nutrition had an effect on Wellness or Illness and thus Behavior.
What does this mean for you? It means that no matter what your level of fitness right now- no matter your degree of illness or wellness, your life will be positively affected by good food and good nutrition. You can either maintain a healthy lifestyle or develop one. Your Health and Wellness will be affected accordingly.

- One episode stands out from the mental and emotional roller coaster of learning to cope with hypoglycemia. I had a 100% average in a college math class. Final exams were intermittent. I rushed to the classroom expecting to finish in 15 or 20 minutes of the alloted hour. My brain, however, did not cooperate. On one problem with two possible solutions, I sort of tossed a mental coin...and used the wrong one. Another type problem had a times one (x 1) at the end. I chose to use (x 5) which had quite an impact on the answer. I knew the solution should be a negative number, but could not track down the (x 5) that I had inserted. After struggling the full hour, I made a 40 on the test. That was the first test I scored below a "B" in my school career. When I returned to my car, I found the chunk of cheese that I meant to eat between classes. I am certain that eating it would have totally changed the outcome on that test. I now understand test anxiety.
