How to Keep your Grill or Smoker Clean and Cooking!

After the steak has been cooked and the beer has been drunk, there is one task left to do : clean up. This ungrateful task is a necessity for keeping your grill in tip top shape as unpleasant as it may be. However, you can make your life easier and extend your grill life with just a few simple steps.

Smoker and Grill Cleaning Step 1: The slow burn

Burn off the drippings after you are done cooking

After you have finished cooking, leave the lid off or open and let the grill continue to burn for five or ten minutes. This will burn off the worst of the drippings as well as 'season' your grill, baking the flavor into the grill itself to give you that slightly smoky, just grilled taste everyone lusts after.

Clean your Barbeque Grill Utensils

BBQ is very difficult when your tools get ruined.

While your grill is burning off, take a few minutes to wipe off your utensils. The sooner you do this after cooking, the easier it is. If you let them 'soak' overnight, the acidic spices, rubs, and sauces can actually pit and scar the metal on the utensils. I recommend using stainless steel tools. They are a little more expensive, but they hold up better and longer, more than justifying the cost.

Scrape down your grill plates for maximum life and minimum fuss

After you have completed the burn off, pull out your trusty scraper. Using a barbeque scrape after each use to remove extra chunks of animal and other goodies left behind during the cook is a must. This one simple task can extend the life of your grill for years!

Warning: Don't scrape so hard that you begin to rub the finish off of the grill. Instead, scrape until all of the major chunks are gone (they should be down to almost ash after the extra burn)

Keeping your Grill Looking Great - Reconditioning the cooking area

Prevent Rust and corrosion on your cooking or smoking surface

Finally, apply a reconditioner to the cooking area. A little cooking oil in a spray bottle is usually effective for this, but there are many sprays on the market that are specially formulated to clean grilling areas. Spray down the grilling surface, close the lid, and wipe down the outside of your grill. All done!

Total barbeque grill clean up time : approximately 15 minutes or one beer.

Warning: Don't apply reconditioner until the grill has cooled. It is usually flammable and can cause a big mess if it ignites.
