About this lens

A brief history of the Houston Astros. Check back often for updates!

The Juice Box

The Houston Astros may not be World Series bound this year, but they are managing to sell a lot of tickets. Despite their apparent failure at getting to the World Series (and winning) ticket sales keep rising. The Houston Astros sold near record numbers of tickets in 2007, and the 2008 season is already shaping up to be a hot one for ticket sales.

You can find the Houston Astros in the Central Division of the National League of Major League Baseball. The 'Stros make their home at Minute Maid Park (the Juice Box to fans) in Houston, Texas. They were the National League Champions in 2005, but have never won a World Series. In fact, their only World Series appearance was on the heels of the 2005 season, but the 'Stros could not manage to hold their own and win their first World Series.

Fans and Talent

The Astros boast some of the most famous fans in baseball, including Former President George H.W. Bush, his wife Barbara, rapper Chamillionaire, Paul Wall, singers Hilary Duff and Jessica Simpson, actor Matthew McConaughey, and Tracy McGrady. Fans such as the infamous O's Bros (supporters of pitcher Oswalt), Los Caballitos, the little Pumas, and more also make a visit to a home game an unforgettable experience.

The Astros have seen their share of talent over the years. Former/retired players include Don Sutton, Eddie Mathews, the legendary pitcher Nolan Ryan, Jeff Bagwell, Craig Biggio, and more. At one time, the Astros were so feared for their outfield abilities that the combined outfield earned the nickname the Killer B's (in honor of the fact that all of the players' last names began with the letter B).

Recruiting and Future

This ball club is known for recruiting local and regional talent for the team. Several key players hail either from the Houston area or from Texas, including Lance Berkman and Cecil Cooper. Retired player Nolan Ryan also hailed from a Houston suburb, Alvin.

The Astros are currently second in the Central Division of the National League, as of June 2008, and they are hoping desperately for their first World Series win or, at the least, another playoff appearance and chance for glory.
