How To Grow an Indoor Hydroponic Garden

The term hydroponic garden was taken from Latin word meaning, "working water". Hydroponic gardening is the art of growing herbs, vegetables and flowers without soil. Instead, the plants thrive in a nutrient based solution that could consist of water, perlite, sand or gravel; any medium that can provide good water retention and drainage. The best way to begin hydroponic gardening may be a kit that will provide you with everything you need and good instructions to get you started. Here are some fabulous tips and tricks for getting your own hydroponic garden going at home.

A quick introduction

Hydroponic gardens are an optimum way to grow a wide variety of plants are not vulnerable to the pests that can easily invade your regular outdoor garden. Plants can grow in a smaller space. With the right equipment, you can enjoy garden fresh vegetables year round from your very own indoor hydroponic garden. Plants will also grow significantly faster with this type of system, giving you larger crops to enjoy more often.

What They Need

A hydroponics garden has three basic requirements that must be met in order for your crop to thrive. First, the roots must be receive a fresh, well balanced supply of water and nutrients at all times. Three also needs to be sufficient level of air exchanged between the roots and the nutrient supply. Finally, you must carefully guard against root dehydration, since this will not only cut off the water supply, but the nutrients as well. Beyond these basics, the supplies you need to start your hydroponic garden include a watertight container, a growing medium and a method for holding the plants in the medium. This might be as simple as a floating piece of Styrofoam with holes cut into it and a collection of nets pots or homemade containers.

If you will be growing your garden indoor, you will also need grow lights to give your plants sufficient lighting to thrive. Hydroponic gardens can be passive or active in nature. The active gardens will circulate the nutrients through the garden using pumps. Passive gardens will pass the nutrients to the plants roots through an absorbent medium or wick. When you are collecting your hydroponic garden supplies, it is a good idea to let the person at the garden center know what type of hydroponic garden you will be planting to ensure you get all of the proper supplies for your new gardening endeavor.

What To Plant

The first step in choosing plants for your hydroponic garden is to select species that have similar needs in terms of light, temperature and nutrients. Any vegetable that can grow vertically gardeners also recommend growing root vegetables in this way, as long as you provide ample room for them to grow. Herbs are practically made for this system since most grow vertically and can easily thrive in an indoor hydroponic garden.

In fact, many of the hydroponic gardening kits will provide seeds or plants to grow a variety of herbs on your kitchen countertop. Imagine the fun of cutting your own fresh herbs right in your kitchen for soups, stews and sauces. Flowers are another good advice.

Getting Started

To begin your hydroponic garden, choose a watertight container to hold your plants. This could be as elaborate as a frame that you put together yourself. It is best to choose an opaque container that will keep the sun out and algae at bay. Fill the container with water and float a Styrofoam board on top with holes cut into it to hold your plants. Fill the container with water so that it is high enough for your plant roots to reap the benefits and add water soluble fertilizer and Epsom salt. Next, place your plants into commercial net pots or make your own containers by cutting slits Styrofoam cups. Set these net pots or containers into your
Styrofoam board and your hydroponic garden is good to go.

Taking Care

Keep an eye on the pH levels of your nutrient water regularly with a pH kit. If your nutrient base becomes too alkaline, add a couple of aspirin or a teaspoon of distilled white vinegar to even things out. Water must also be added regularly to keep roots from drying out. Nutrients will not need to be replaced as frequently, but if your plants are going to grow for longer than 4 weeks, you may also need to add some to the mixture.

A hydroponic garden is the perfect way to flex your green thumb and explore a whole new level of the gardening experience. With the huge selection, of crops and the ability to control all of the variables, hydroponic gardens can be successful for gardeners of all experience levels. Enjoy your garden.
