Basil (Ocimum basilicum)
Basil is originally a native to India and parts of China, it grows in abundance in Suriname and reached the Western World sometimes in the 16th Century. Now we can find Basil growing everywhere India it is a Ayurvedic herb and has spiritual significance in India and western China. It became a royal Herb in France and in Italy it is the Herb of Love. American Colonist mixed it in their Snuff to ease headaches.
In some countries, Basil is associated with the legendary reptile Basilisk. Basilisk is said to be able to kill with his look and his breath both. In ancient times, Basil was looked up on as Good and as Evil. Others however cherished it as a protection against witchcraft and as a symbol of love.

Basil in the Kitchen
Today, many cooks would find it hard to cook with out the spice when fresh and sweet when dried Herb. It is easy to grow and easy to dry and store.In countries where Tomatoes are a daily stable, one will also find Basil in the kitchen. Basil will counteract the acidity in the tomatoes and and act as a buffer in the intestinal tract. Also with daily use, Basil will lower cortisol levels and help lower blood sugar. A very important part in countries with rich food traditions.
Healing with Basil
In Herbal Healing the benefit of Basil is manyfold. It lowers blood pressure, is an antispasmodic, eases tension, it is a general detoxifying agent, it cleanses the blood, it is known to lower blood sugar levels, it also lowers stress levels, it acts as an anti-inflammatory, it lowers your cholesterol and it can be used as an adaptogen.As a tea, you pour one cup of boiling water over two tablespoons of fresh, bruised leaves and you will have an effective remedy for delayed menstruation. Basil tea, made from fresh leaves, is also used for nausea, gas pains, also a tea made from fresh Basil and Peppercorns is reputed to reduce fever.
Bruised Basil leaves also will relive the pain of an insect sting and a strong tea applied to the skin is also a very effective insect repellent.
