Basketball Ball Handling Drills

Effective Basketball Ball Handling is the most sought after skill by College coaches today. Consistently the NCAA Final four teams are the ones with the best backcourt. Becoming a great ball handler takes dedication and practice. Below I've listed several drills you can do immediately to help with your ball handling.

Dribbling with a Tennis Ball

Ball Handling Drill #1

This little known drill is very difficult at first but it will show a dramatic improvement in your handles.

1st start by dribbling the tennis ball casually with your right hand and then with your left hand. Try not to allow the palms of your hands to touch the ball. The try with your head up. Once you feel comfortable try dribbling and walking alternating hands on occasion. You may need to look down at first then graduate to keeping your head up. Now its time to run and dribble, same as walking alternate hands and graduate to looking up while running and dribbling. Finally the masters course involves dribbling 2 ball at the same time. Start from the beginning and work your way back up.

Squeeze the Banana

Ball Handling Drill #2

Strong fingers are essential to ball control. This drill will strengthen your fingers. Hold the ball in front of you at eye level with two hands. By squeezing your fingers and thumb together with one hand at a time, you move the ball from one hand to the other as quickly as you can.

Power dribbling

Ball Handling Drill #3

Dribble the basketball as hard as you can while staying under control. Power dribble for 10 seconds, then soft dribble for 5 seconds. Repeat multiple times alternating hands. This exercise teaches your arm muscles how to alternate between various dribbling speeds that occur during game play.

Power dribbling-Double ball

Ball Handling drill #4

Power dribble with a ball in each hand. This will increase your arm strength for dribbling and enhance your dribbling control. Since you can`t look at both hands at the same time, this drill will also practice your ability to power dribble without looking at the ball.

"Alex Maroko has created a program for anybody, at any level, to become an amazing ball-handler. Using the same drills and moves found in this book, my 13 year-old son has become a truly skilled ball-handler, while working with Alex. Everywhere I go, people comment on how impressed they are with my son's dribbling, not to mention how proud I am to watch him carve up opposing defenses! "
