Amazonite
Fun Gemstone Facts and Folklore, Amazonite
Amazonite has an opaque to translucent quality.
This gemstone has long been popular in jewelry making and adornment as it is hard enought to polish or carve, 5 to 6 on the Mohs Scale.
Amazonite, Potassium Aluminum Silicate, is a rare variety of the common mineral feldspar and can be found throughout the world in the United States, Brazil, Zimbabwe, Russia, Australia, and Namibia.
The true origin of Amazonite's name is a bit of a question. Some sources say Amazonite is named after the Amazon River where some green stones were discovered. However, these stones turned out not to be Amazonite after all. Even though true Amazonite is not found in the Amazon River area, it is found in other parts of Brazil.
On the other hand, some sources say Amazonite was named after the legendary tribe of Warrior Amazon Women.
In any case, Amazonite is steeped legend and folklore. Its astrological sign is Virgo and it is one of the December birthstones.
Amazonite was widely used by the Egyptians and was called the "Stone of Courage". Egyptians believed the stone instilled in oneself feelings of power and inspired truth, sincerity, honor, self-love and eloquence in communicating with others.
Amazonite also has the power to help people sort out and analyze information. It enables us to combine wisdom and intuition during the decision-making process. Amazonite allows us to trust in our intuition and heart felt wisdom instead of rationalizing these away.
Amazonite is also know as the "Soothing Stone". It eases tension, anxiety, and fear. It also reduces feelings of anger and irritation as well as checking self-destructive behaviors.
Another name for Amazonite is the "Hope Stone". It eases feelings of sadness and grief. It also inspires confidence and hope and restores spiritual faith. It also gives us the stamina and courage we need to discover our inner truths and to follow the strengths of our convictions.
The "Prosperity Stone" is yet another name for Amazonite. In times past busniness owners hung it over doorways to bring in new business. Amazonite was also a favorite of gamblers.
Crystal healers believe that Amazonite has a number of beneficial powers. It can improve the skin and help problems like tooth decay or osteoporosis by helping the body absorb calcium.
It can also balance metabolism and ease childbirth by easing muscle cramps.
Black Jade Gemstone
Fun Gemstone Facts and Folklore, Black Jade
Black jade is one of the more rare colors of genuine jade. Most of us probably think of jade as having a luscious green color. However, jade does come in a variety of colors. One of them is black.
Jade is a very durable as well as beautiful stone. The Mohs Scale of Hardness rates substances on how resistant they are to being scratched. The Mohs Scale rates substances from 1 to 10, with 10 being the hardest and most resistant to scratching. Jade ranks 6 1/2 to 7 on this scale.
Since jade stone was fairly plentiful as well as being durable, ancient peoples used jade to make weapons, such as knives and axes. With the Bronze Age came the use of metals.
Jade has been prized for centuries and has had many legends and powers associated with it. For example, ancient people believed that jade had very powerful properties that protected vital organs within the human body. Therefore, wearing jade protected oneself from negative forces and promoted a strong, healthy body and a long life.
Jade was also a symbol of love and virtue. It was a precious and meaningful gift to give to a lover. Jade was also believed to protect one from negative thoughts, to foster wise use of power, and to aid in making good decisions and choices. It was also considered to be helpful in relaxing and reducing stress.
Black jade is a beautiful stone, but it can also be quite expensive. Therefore, jewelrymakers often use a lovely serpentine stone that has been dyed black as a substitute for real black jade. Therefore, you can have the expensive fashion look of real black jade at a fraction of the cost. Just be sure that if you are buying real jade, you actually get real jade and not a substitute stone.
I would be happy to receive any topic suggestions or comments.
Carnelian
Fun Gemstone Facts and Folklore--- Carnelian
This stone is a member of the quartz family and its colors can range from yellow to reddish brown to deep red.
Carnelian is found in many countries throughout the world including: Brazil, India, Arabia, Austrialia, Madagascar, Russia, South Africa, and the USA.
Carnelian is a moderately hard semi-precious stone, a 7 on the Mohs scale of hardness. Its durable qualities and beautiful rich red and reddish brown colors make carnelian a highly prized gemstone.
Even in ancient times, the Greeks and Romans valued Carnelian and crafted it into ornate signet rings and state seals.
Carnelian also has a rich history in myth and folklore. It is the astrological birthstone for the zodiac signs of Leo and Virgo.
Carnelian is also the symbol of St. Sebastian, a martyred Roman soldier.
Carnlian is believed to protect the traveler after death and wards of evil and other woes.
Historically, Carnelian was only worn by the noble classes. These people so valued it that they were buried with Carnelian artifacts.
Carnelian was also seen as a protection against poverty.
Crystal healers highly value this gemstone for its healing and balancing qualities.
It is said to purify the blood, relieve menstral cramps, reduce back pain, and increase the appetite.
In balancing the body, Carnelian calms the temper and brings forth our sense of humor.
Carnelian enchances our energy levels. It brings out our inner confidence and the strength to voice our opinions. We can more easily reveal ourselves to others and communicate successfully.
In addition, this gemstone helps us to be creative, well-balanced, and grounded.
It can clear away negative energy and thoughts which, in turn, help us to strike of in new directions with confidence in our abilities.
Even today, Carnelian is still prized as a beautiful and affordable stone for jewelry, beads, and cameos.
Some sources say that when true carneilan is placed in the sun, brown tints in the stone turn to red.
Perhaps, this is why much of the Carnelian in the marketplace today has been heated in order to bring forth the best of its beauty.
Goldstone
Fun Gemstone Facts and Folkore -- Goldstone
The origins of this popular man-made gemstone are interesting and even a bit of a mystery!
Goldstone is most commonly a reddish brown color with shiney golden flecks throughout. However, it can also be blue, green, or even purple in color with metallic flecks.
As to the origin of goldstone, folklore has it that goldstone was accidentally discovered by a now unknown order of monks in perhaps as early as the 13th or 14th centuries.
The story suggests that the monks were creating a batch of glass and accidentally spilled copper shavings into the vat. Thus goldstone is also known as "monk's gold" or "monkstone".
However, skeptics of this theory state that such an accidental mixing of glass and copper shavings would not have produced a product having tiny flecks of shiney metal scattered evenly throughout the molton glass.
Sometimes, goldstone is also called "stellaria" because the many glittering points of light within the glass are reminiscent of stars in the night sky.
Other olden tales indicate that goldstone was accidentally discovered by medievel alchemists who were trying to combine substances to create expensive and highly prized gold.
More official sources contend that goldstone was first discovered and the process perfected by Christoforo Briani in the 13th century. He was one of the early glass makers of Murano, Italy.
However, skeptics of this idea argue that although Briani did integrate natural agate and chalcedoney into glass, there is no solid evidence that he actually created goldstone.
The most widely accepted theory on the origins of goldstone indicates that goldstone was really discovered by Vincenzo Miotti in the 17th century in Venice, Italy.
For centuries the process of creating goldstone was a closely held trade secret of the Miotti family of glass makers.
Goldstone also has many folktales about its spiritual and medical benefits.
Spiritually, goldstone symbolizes ingenuity, ambition, and drive. Goldstone is also an uplifting stone in that it helps to reduce tension, and encourages a positive attitude.
Goldstone is believed to be a source of protection and is helpful in the pursuit of riches and love.
Goldstone may also have many medical and physical benefits for the wearer. For instance, it can reduce stomach tension, improve metabolism, cure infections, strengthen the nervous system, and promotes healing through revitalizing tissue.
It is also believed that the copper found in goldstone helps the circulation, strengthens bones, and eases the pain of arthritis and rheumatism.
In conclusion, goldstone has been a popular decorative material on and off for centuries. Its popularity arises from its lovely sparkling luster.
In addition, its hardness and durability lends itself well to being carved into beautiful figurines, cameos, charms, pendants, and beads.
Remember that goldstone is a man-made material and it is made primarily of copper and glass. Be aware that sometimes it is misrepresented as a natural material.
I hope you find these gemstone articles fun and helpful with your jewelry shopping.

Hemalyke or Hematite?
Fun Gemstone Facts and Folklore, Hemalyke or Hematite?
Hemalyke is made by grinding natural Hematite into a power and then adding a glue binder. The resulting mixture is pressed into a mold, shaped, and polished to make lovely jewelry making components. Hemalyke, the man-made material, can be hard to distinguish from natural Hematite.
Another property of Hemalyke is that it can be magnetically charged. Magnetic hemalyke can also be called Magnetite.
Many people believe magnets have healing properties and that magnetic Hemalyke jewelry offers a fun and fashionable way to take advantage of magnetic healing.
Hematite, on the other hand, is a natural stone formally classified as a mineral, Iron Oxide (Fe203).
It is commonly reddish, gray-metallic, black, reddish gray, or reddish brown in color.
Hematite is also a fairly hard stone that polishes well making it a useful stone for jewelry making. Hematite measures 5.5 to 6.5 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness.
This scale was first devised by minerologist Fredrich Mohs in 1812. It is still the industry wide standard by which the hardness of gemstones are measured.
Hematite is found in many parts of the world. In the USA it can be found in many Western States and in the Great Lakes Region. It can also be found in Canada, Italy, Brazil, Switzerland, England, Mexico and Australia.
Hematite comes from the Greek, "haima" meaning "blood". Therefore, Hematite is sometimes referred to as "Bloodstone".
Historically, Hematite has many practical as well as spirtual properties. In powdered form, red, Hematite was used for pigments. Some Native American Tribes used Hematite powder in face paint.
Also, the ancient Egyptians prized Hematite and often carved it into scarabs. Long ago, Hematite was polished and used as mirrors.
Crystal healers believe that Hematite has healing as well as spirtual qualities. Wearing Hematite can aid in treating disorders of the blood, leg cramps, and insomnia. It can help to focus the mind, enhance mental capabilities, improve memory, and boost creativity.
Hematite is also consider to have certain protective qualities against ionization. It is good to wear when working with computers.

Unakite
Fun Gemstone Facts and Folklore, Unakite
Unakite is a semi-precious gemstone in the granite family of stones. It is commonly composed of quartz, felspar, and epidote.
Unakite is named after the Unaka Range of mountains in South Carolina where it was first discovered. Unakite can also be found on the shores of Lake Superior in Michgan and in the river valleys of Virgina where it has washed down from the Blue Ridge Mountains. Unakite is also the state gem of Virgina.
Although Unakite was first discovered in the USA it can also be found in South Africa, Brazil, and China.
On the Mohs scale of hardness Unakite ranks about a 6 or 7, making it very resistant to scratching and therefore, able to polish well for use as a jewelry component.
There is also a great deal of legend and folklore associated with Unakite. It is said to have a very powerful influence over human emotions. Unakite acts to balance emotions by removing mental stress and trauma associated with past tragedies and problems. In order for this to happen Unakite aids in the slow release of pent up emotions which allows people to move on from the past and to live more happily in the present.
Unakite assists in unifying our emotional, spiritual, and physical beings to help us become a more complete and balanced person. In this way Unakite is beneficial for those who seek a more fulfilling and well rounded life.
Healers believe that the pink felspar has feminine energy and the green epidote is a masculine force. Therefore with this blend of energy found in Unakite, people are better able to find emotional and spirtual balance. Unakite helps people to cope with their feelings, particularly those of separation or abandonment. Unakite promotes a general love of humanity.
Unakite also has many healing powers. Healers think that Unakite can be used to treat female reproductive problems and aids in a healthy pregnancy.
Unakite can be beneficial in gardening, gaining weight, and in diagnosing and recovering from illness.
Unakite can also act to negate the harmful effects of electromagnetic fields. Research has linked cancer to these types of fields.
These facts and folklore tidbits are far from scientific, but hopefully they are fun and interesting. Please email me to suggest any topic you would like to know more about. Please sign my guestbook.
General Tips for Buying Silver Jewelry and Collectibles
Is Your New Found Treasure Really Silver?
But Wait!!!
How can you be sure your new found treasure is really a desireable piece of art or is it just a phoney "piece of work"? No one likes to be taken by an uscrupulous dealer or merchant.
Here are a few basic tips that may help you steer clear of some common pitfalls in your collecting pursuits.
Of course, one of the best ways to protect yourself from getting a bad deal on your silver purchases is to educate yourself.
First of all, the term "silver" and "sterling silver" as they are used in the marketplace today encompass a wide range of prices and quality of jewelry items and other collectibles. Many items being sold and represented as "silver" or "sterling silver" may not contain any silver at all!
Offically, "sterling silver" is 925 parts out of 1000 parts silver. The remaining 75 parts are another metal, usually copper. Copper gives sterling silver its strength and durablity.
"Fine" or pure silver is 99% pure. Therefore, it is simply too soft to be practical for jewelry making or for use in creating other household objects. For example, a merchant who states that a bracelet or candle holder is made of "fine" silver would obviously be mistaken. Such claims would be clear clues that something is amiss with the quality of the item for sale or that the high price is too high for this particular item.
Although it is necessary to add copper or other metals to silver to make it strong and durable, it is also these metals that react with oxygen in the air that causes tarnish.
All in all, you want silver to be high in purity, but yet hard enough and durable enough to make jewelry and other object wearable and practical to use in everyday living.
Another tip to keep in mind when buying silver objects is to examine any hallmarks or marks. These can be very important tools in verifying the authenticity of an item. A hallmark designates the designer, manufacturer, or artisan who created the object.
Therefore, the hallmark must match up with the information given by the seller. For instance, a hallmark of an artisan living and crafting in the early 1900's would clearly be out of place on an object said to be made in the early 1800's. This example is a little over simplified, perhaps, but you get the idea.
The hallmark or any other marks should also match the level of craftsmanship of an object when compared to the artisan's normal quality of workmanship.
However, be aware of false or counterfit hallmarks. Some famous and well respected hallmarks have been copied by unscrupulous manufacturers.
Another tip is, to look for appropriate signs of wear or polishing. Antique silver jewelry often has a certain "patina" that tells us the jewelry has actually been lovingly worn and cared for over the years.
Another caution to be aware of when buying silver items is that many terms relating to silver merchandise can be extremely misleading. For example, here are a few terms used to describe "nickel silver" and other alloys which contain no silver at all:
Alpacca Silver, Afghan Silver, Bengal Silver, Japanese Silver, Norwegian Silver, and Venetian Silver.
Bristol silver, for example, is a non-silver alloy that looks very much like real sterling silver.
Austrian Silver does not refer to the silver content of an item, but to the nickel plate over the surface.
Additional "silver" terms refer to the marks found on flatware. For instance, African Silver is a mark on silver plated flatware from 1850 to 1900.
Oregon Silver actually describes English silverplate from the 1880's and Pearl Silver is a mark on flatware that has been plated with nickel silver, which has no silver content at all.
You might also discover items made from Mexican Silver. Such items are of an unreliable silver content. Some of these items are made of a nickel and silver alloy and others may not contain any silver at all.
Sterlon is a trade name for silver alloy materials.
You may also find that your treasure is not solid silver, but that it is silver plated over a base metal. This metal is often nickel, a nickel silver alloy, brass or pewter.
EPNS is a mark indicating that an object is Electro Plated Nickel Silver.
EPBM is Electro Plated Britannia Metal which means that a thin layer of silver is plated over a nickel or pewter base metal.
In conclusion, if you plan to spend a considerable amount of money in your silver shopping activities, you should probably consider consulting reputable dealers, auction houses, collectors, and designers.
You can also have your silver tested to ensure its purity and value.
The best way to keep from being duped when discovering that perfect silver item is to become well informed and keep in mind that many "silver" terms and even marks can be misleading.
If an item catches your eye and tugs at your heart, it might be worthwhile to take a chance if the price seems reasonble.
This article does not contain a complete list of all the misleading terms or marks you may encounter while shopping for silver items. However, this information may set you upon the right track for an enjoyable and worthwhile shopping adventure.
No wonder we love silver jewelry and collectibles. Silver has been mined and used to make household items, religious artifacts and jewelry for over 5,000 years!
Basic Tips For Buying Gold Jewelry
Vermeil, Gold Filled, and Gold Plated Jewelry
Vermeil, pronounced (vehr-may) is also called "silver gilt". Vermeil is made by coating sterling silver with gold. In order be considered vermeil, the gold must be at least 10 karats and be at least 1.5 micrometers thick over the surface of the sterling silver underneath.
There are two ways in which vermeil can be produced, either by fire-gilding or by electrolysis.
Originally, vermeil was made by the fire-gilding process first developed in France in the 1700's. However, this process was eventurally banned there because the artisans involved in making vermeil became blind as a result of long term exposure to mercury used in the vermeil process. The mercury would evaporate off when the item was fired.
Today, a process called electrolysis, also known as electroplating, is used to safely make vermeil.
Good quality vermeil is usually .003 of an inch of 18 karat gold. You can also find vermeil made from 14 karat and 22 karat gold.
Vermeil jewelry should not be machine polished as this can cause damage. Use a soft lint-free cloth to gently wipe off vermeil jewelry.
Gold-filled jewelry components are also widely used in jewelry making today. These are made by a process of layering gold onto another metal, often silver, with heat and pressure.
Unlike vermeil, there is no electrolysis used to create a gold-filled jewelry piece. Gold-filled is made by layering solid gold over the surface of another metal.
In gold-filled jewelry pieces the gold must be at least 1/20th the weight of the total product and at least 10 karat gold.
This gold layering should last a lifetime of normal wear, very similar that of solid gold, but at a much lower cost.
Gold plated jewelry is also very popular because it has the look of gold jewelry at a very low cost, but it is also less durable.
In gold plating, any metal can be coated with gold. This layer of gold is very thin and is bonded to the base metal with an electrolysis or a chemical process.
Gold plated jewelry is often found in costume jewelry, which can be very lovely and low cost, but it will not last a lifetime of wear as will solid gold and gold-filled jewelry pieces.

Jewelry How To's---How to Clean Pearls
Popular Tips on Cleaning Pearl Jewelry
The first tip is to wipe your pearls off with a soft lint-free cloth each time you wear them. This helps to remove any make-up or perspiration that might be on them.
If you use a damp cloth to wipe off your pearls, be sure to let them dry completely before puting them away. Also, be sure to lay pearls flat to avoid stretching the cord they are stranded upon.
If your pearls need a more thorough cleaning, be sure to use a very mild soap and water solution. Harsh solutions containing detergents or amonia will likely damage the pearl's lustrous finish. In addition, pearls are porous and could absorb some of these solutions.
Another tip is to use your hands to wash pearls. A scrubber, brush, or rough cloth can scratch them or wear away the pearl's natural nacre coating.
Never put pearls in an ultra-sonic cleaner. This could crack them.
You may want to be on the safe side and use only a cleaning solution that is made especially for cleaning pearls.
It is also recommended that you have your pearl jewelry professionally cleaned at least every other year. Some sources recommend every year.
At this time, your jeweler can inspect the thread or cord to be sure your precious pearls remain securely stranded.
Finally, if you have any concerns about cleaning your precious pearl jewelry, ask a knowledgeable jeweler you trust to help give you advice on cleaning pearls.
If you have any tips or suggestions about safely cleaning pearl jewelry, please contact me to add them to this article.
Jewelry How To's--How To Care For Pearls
Popular Tips on Protecting Pearl Jewelry
For instance, try to keep pearls from direct contact with your skin as you wear them. Make-up, perfumes and even perspiration can discolor pearls.
Perspiration contains acid that can be harmful to pearls. So, do not exercise when wearing your pearls and do not wear them on very hot days.
Also, take off pearl rings and bracelets before applying hand creams and body lotions. These products can discolor pearls or cause a buildup of these substances.
It is a good idea to wipe your pearls off with a soft, dry cloth each time you wear them. If you use a damp cloth, let them lie flat and dry thoroughly. Also, do not hang pearl strands in your jewelry box. Store them lying flat to prevent stretching the cord the pearls are stranded on.
If your pearls are stranded on silk cord, it is recommended that these be restranded about once a year to be sure the silk cord is not fraying and becoming weak.
If you need pearls restranded, you might consider having them knotted. This keeps the pearls apart so they cannot rub against each other thereby reducing wear and scratching.
If your pearls have become worn and lost a bit of their luster, gently wipe them with a bit of olive oil. (If you have concerns about this, ask your jeweler, before using any products on your pearls.)
Other precautions you can take to protect your pearl jewelry is to avoid heat from household radiators and television sets. Too much heat can discolor pearls.
Use only cleaners that are safe for pearls. Abrasive cleaners can scratch them.
Pearls are very soft and porous, only about 2.5 to 4.5 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness. Therefore, avoid wearing pearls over clothing that has a rough texture, such as wool. Doing so will rub and perhaps scratch the pearl's finish.
Since pearls are easily scratched, store them away from your other jewelry pieces, in a soft bag or cloth. Perhaps a chamois or silk bag.
Pearls can also be damaged by acids, even common vinegar. Other substances to avoid are alcohol, amonia, hairspray, bleach, perfume, make-up and even swimming pool water.
Since pearls are soft and porous, they tend to be somewhat absorbent. You may want to take extra care when cooking. Smoke, steam, and food odors can be absorbed by the pearls to a certain extent.
In conclusion, pearls do need fresh air from time to time and should be worn at least once a month. However, avoid harsh sunlight.
Finally, if you have any questions about caring for and protecting your pearls, ask a good jeweler that you trust for advice.
