Top 5 Reasons Why The Beagle Dog Is Americas Favorite Dog
Ranked #2,721 in Pets & Animals, #70,380 overall | Donates to ASPCA
America's favorite dog
The Beagles uniqueness
Reason 1
These are the talents and things that make the Beagle dog so unique. the Beagle has one of the best developed senses of smell of any dog Beagles are better at ground-scenting (following a trail on the ground) than they are at air-scenting. The Beagle has an even temper and gentle disposition. Described in several breed standards as "merry", they are amiable and generally neither aggressive nor timid. They enjoy company, and although they may initially be standoffishwith strangers, they are easily won over. Beagles are excellent with children and this is one of the reasons they have become popular family pets, but they are pack animals, and can be prone to separation anxiety.
The Role That Beagles Play In Society
Reason #2
The Beagle dogs role in society.Although bred for hunting, Beagles are versatile and are nowadays employed for various other roles in detection, therapy, and as family pets. Beagles are used as sniffer dogs for termite inspection in Australia. The Beagle dog is also employed as candidates for drug and explosive detection. Because of their gentle nature and unimposing build, they are also frequently used in pet therapy, visiting the sick and elderly in the hospital. This is amazing you gotta read this.In June 2006, a trained Beagle assistance dog was credited with saving the life of its owner after using his owner's mobile phone to dial an emergency number.

The Beagles Popularity
Reason #3
I'm sure you know, or at least heard of several famous Beagles. Whether a cartoon character, movie star, or dog show winners. Underdog was a great cartoon and was made into a major motion picture, which was loved by many children and adults including me. Snoopy is also a wonderful dog that has cracked me up several times. There are many books and movies based of the famous Beagle character Shiloh. Those are the famous well-known beagles. But I have my own little famous Beagle named Barney. When my wife and I take him for a walk the kids on the block say "it's Barney, it's Barney. Then if I walk down the street alone they say "look it's Barney's dad".SquiDirectory - Visit the SquiDirectory Squidoo directory, and find something interesting to read about!

Less Health Risks
Reason #5
Over all Beagles are very healthy dogs. They're very easy to groom and have low maintenance. I think the most common health risks for beagles is obesity. Beagles may not become obese if they have a healthy diet and exercise. They are prone to live about 12-16 years with proper care. Our Barney also does this snorting which is common in Beagles. It's called an introverted sneeze which is pretty common. It's kind of embarrassing when I walk him and he starts doing that. People always ask if he's alright. I just say " yeah he's fine ". Beagles Make Great Family Dogs
Reason # 4
Beagles are known to have a an even temper. They are great with children and are very social pets. The beagle dog is not known to show any aggression towards other dogs, children, or people. I'm surprised at how our Barney has so much patience with children, it really amazes me. The kids can be pulling his tail, tugging his ears, and even laying on him, and he just takes it like a beagle with no aggression what so ever. What really blows me away is when the kids are outside playing he cries and wants to be with them, after all the abuse. Cool Beagle merchandise

- We adopted a 2 yr. old Beagle mix from a shelter 5 years ago, in NYC. She was found sniffing around Rockaway Beach. Her name is Opal and she presented quite a challenge. She suffered from Separation Anxiety and went ballistic when you put her in a crate. With help from a trainer, lots of patience and a large dose of humor, she eventually acclimated to her new home and owners. Opal has a lovable, unusual, and distinct personality. So much so, that when we all moved to Portland, OR and were at a loss as to what to do, she inspired us to start a T-shirt company. She is the muse for a delightfully odd mix of images, featuring her unique take on life. Her face can be found at www.wagandwoo.com. We thank our Beagle for encouraging us to live life...totally off the leash!

- Oh..and one more thing... Did you guys know that the US Customs Dept has a "Beagle Brigade" with 30 beagles they use at major airports? They all wear little green coats with "U.S. Customs" on the sides in gold. And..the customs officers will NOT allow you to take their pictures.

- We have 3 little girl beagles, Daisy, Lily and Shiloh. I was pleased to read about the "snorting" since we were concerned enough to suspect alergies and were giving them (all 3 do it) half a Benadryl a day. No more...now we gently stroke their necks.
All 3 of ours were rescue dogs. Here's an interesting fact...Shiloh is the youngest (about 3) and Daisy and Lily (mother and daughter) came to us together Daisy is about 5 and Lily 3-ish...but...since Shiloh was here first..she became the "mom". She grooms the other two daily, they defer to her when going out the door, etc... WE didn't realize that the dog who is there "first" almost always becomes the alpha, according to our LONG-time vet (20 years).
The only problem we have with any of them is that sometimes...once or twice a week, Daisy "forgets" to go outside to pee and she has a favorite hall. I wind up steam cleaning the carpets in that hall almost monthly, but nothing deters her. We can't catch her actually doing it but there is no doubt. When we find it and make a fuss...she puts her head down and heads out the doggie door. I've even put her nose in it and swatted her a couple of times...but then she's just so mortified for a whole day that I can't bear to do it any more. WE've tried to focus on going outside with all 3 right after dinner, before bed, right after getting up in the morning so I'm sure that's helped...but it hasn't stopped. Short of taking up the carpet and going to wood floors, what would you suggest? Do you think an apple spray (that keeps them from chewing) might help? If you have any ideas I'd sure appreciate it, please reply to richardv888@yahoo.com and thank you...
And...BEAGLES ROCK!

- This is a great lens. I have seen a few things on beagles just lately, and I am definitely considering one although my true love are Jack Russells.
This lens is really informative though, and obviously much thought has gone into it.
Best wishes,
SarahE

- I Liked this part about how helpful beagles can be.-Because of their gentle nature and unimposing build, they are also frequently used in pet therapy, visiting the sick and elderly in the hospital.- and the picture of the beagle in bed with an elderly citizen -so loving. And my beagle sitting next to me right now, quietly whining for me to share my jelly beans. Jelly Beans are for peoples, silly beagle! Nice lens.
