27 Ways to Become a Better Salesperson

Top Tips to Keep you Selling in a Tough Economy

I am Monique, a sales and marketing professional who is taking a challenge to upgrade my skills. I have recently signed up for the Top Sales Experts membership program, (topsalesexperts.com) and I am going to use their suggestions to further my techniques and, hopefully, career.
It will come as a surprise to NO ONE that there is a great "recession" fear building, and it is scaring people into hiding their money in their mattresses. Well, my ultimate goal is to force...I mean convince...these people into accessing those dollar bills hidden away and give them to me. If you are reading this lens, you probably want a piece of that pie as well. Hopefully, we can get there together.
Today is the first day of my new "training" and I have decided to start with a lesson plan about staying afloat in troubled waters. So, I am starting by reading the Ebook 27 Can-Do Steps to Sell More in Tough Times by Skip Anderson of sellingtoconsumers.com
What I have learned is the meat and potatoes of this lens, but the gravy is going to be all your comments and anecdotes. Don't forget to share your successes and, if you want, failures, in my guestbooks.

“This is my interpretation of the Ebook, not verbatim. Please accept my apologzes Mr. Anderson!”

Preface:

Before reading, some things you should know...

This is a pseudo review of the Ebook by Skip Anderson. I have inserted my wit and banter into the tips as I interpreted his suggestions. If you don't find me funny, that's just too bad because I believe I am quite a riot.
I would like to begin by prefacing these tips with this food for thought:

You must be the change you want to see in the world.

Don't give up. Don't pretend it is business as normal. Do make a change. Really, where would we be without Ghandi?

Let's Begin:

Embarking on a Journey to Become a Better Salesperson

27 ways to increase your skills as a salesperson; read on.
  1. Commit. If you are not committed to your job, you will fail, so you may as well quit. The Ebook said it nicer, but that is the gist of the argument. You'll be more creative and dedicated to finding a solution if you are 100% committed to your job. That makes sense.
  2. Get over it. C'est la vie. Shit happens. You get the picture, now get over it.
  3. Stay in touch. Remember all those customers, potentials customers, business colleagues, etc. that you used to have? Well, now would be a good time to re-introduce yourself to them. And beg (discreetly) to be let back in to their social circle. You need a network.

4. Get motivated.

Find a point of motivation and jump on for the ride!

Be like me and join a sales network, read sales ebooks and articles, and educate yourself in order to be the best you that you can be. Some of the recommended sites mentioned are:

5, 6, and 7: Get Help, Get Help, Get Help

Oh, how do I need help; let me count the ways.

If you are reading this lens, you need help. You know you do, so stop denying it and get help!
  • Get help. Try not to get depressed, but if you do, get help. This may sound amusing or off-hand, but it is serious. Check it: Sales Vitamins
  • Figure out how you can use people to get what you want. Only be nice about it, and offer your help in return. Karma is a dangerous force to reckon with, so beware of unconditional using.
  • As Nike says, just do it. Ask for it. You are not all-knowing, there is someone out there who knows something you don't, so why don't you just ask about it?

Using Google as a Mentor

Dear Google, I need help!

Imagine time travelling backwards 25 years so that you could have a conversation with the smartest person you can think of. Imagine you ask this whiz a question that he or she does not immediately know the answer to.So what do you say? "Let's Google it!" Well, that whiz now thinks you are a looney, because Google doesn't exist 25 years ago!
Thank goodness you really live in 2009 and whenever you have a question that even the smartest person you know can't answer, there will be Google, just waiting for you.
So, if you don't have a mentor, let Google be your guide. Check out these little morsels of information.

11. Be Honest With Yourself...And Me.

Ask yourself this question:

Loading poll. Please Wait...

“If you said find new customers, go back to school and read this again when you change your answer.”

12. Stop wasting time. Yeah, right, you say. Yeah! Right! I say!

13. Try something new.

Surprise your customers. Astonish yourself. Get crazy. Always remember, everything you do could be done better. Get your clients in on the quest for new and improved and maybe they'll come up with ideas that will work for you and them. Just try something...anything! Everyone's bored already, and you need to shake it up!
  • 14. Get down on your knees and beg. Just a thought. It might work. You might need to re-adjust the webcam a bit, but...it might just be what you need to do.
  • 15. Take a sales aptitude test. I can't joke about this because I have never done one before. I will do one, however, and let y'all know how it went.

16. Remember when I said that everything you do could be done better?

And remember how I said get over it?

Well, put the two sentences together and this is what you get: You are not God, accept it and move on. Know your weaknesses and learn how to improve upon them. Suggested educational materials:

19. Find your sense of humour and use it.

If you aren't funny, use that.

But don't let your customers get away with brushing you off; use your sales superpowers and get them on board TODAY. "I am not messing around, so just show me the money, Joe."
  • 20. Get out of your routine and think outside the box. Wear Tuesday's underwear on a Thursday and throw caution to the wind, there is a salesperson on the loose!
  • 21. "Joe, I need to ask you something...do you really like me?" Get feedback from someone you can trust to answer "yes" to that question with minimal hesitation. Bribe your best customer with a Starbucks card (better than cash, these days) and find out what they like or dislike about your approach and the approaches of other salespeople they are in contact with. Compare and Contrast, if you will.
  • 22. Dress for success. 'Nough said.
  • 23. Think big. Go after the biggest fish in the barrel. If you've made it this far down the list, chances are you catch him, hook, line and sinker. If you don't, it can only get easier, right?
  • 24. Get excited. Smile. Gesture. Use body language, even if you are on the phone. Your voice will reflect your motions, and your customers will feel more comfortable with you. Or they'll ask you why the hell you sound winded, but at least you'll have a conversation starter. Also, you'll find yourself amusing and the day won't look so dismal after all.

25. Take a vacation.

All of your customers will assume you must be rolling in the money to be able to afford a vacation in times like these, so they'll jump on the bandwagon the second you return to the grind!

“26. Find a mastermind(s) and set up a group which would allow you to pick their brains.”

Be My Mastermind!

I know the answer already, but I want to know if you know...

Share your tips and techniques for selling in a tough economy. You've seen the tips, given by an expert, mutilated by a student (ME!), and now I want to know what you think.

The sales profession is both over simplified, and over complicated by most "sales gurus". In reality is begins with a basis in understanding, liking, and serving people. The skills best adapted are clear communication, coupled with responsive follow up and integrity.

A true professional typically has a minimum of 5 years of intense study and practice behind him or her before skill mastery sets in. In reality few ever reach this level simply because in sales you can "get by" pretty well without ever becoming that good. But those who master the skills have the luxury of being able to pick their path and obtain the freedom to live the life they please.

Sales truly is the lowest paid easy work, and the highest paid hard work you can find.

It can not be reduced to "trick" phrases, (though when used in well developed and sincere communication some words definitely work better than others). It is all about "mastery of communication" and love of people.

Try to release the pressure
