On the Life of Jane Austen
A romantic and historical period piece, inspired by the life of British author Jane Austen. Jane is the daughter of Reverend Austen (James Cromwell), a minister who is a minister in a small rural community in Southern England, with his wife (Julie Walters). Jane's older sister, Cassandra (Anna Maxwell Martin), is soon to be married , Jane resists her family's not so subtle efforts to match her up with Mr. Wisley (Laurence Fox), the wealthy but rather dull nephew of Lady Gresham (Maggie Smith). The match is considered a good one for both Jane and her family, since Lady Gresham is a minor member of the nobility. Jane has the soul of an artist, and hopes to establish herself as either a musician or a writer. Although her parents don't think much of her career prospects, and wish she would marry. When Jane meets Tom Lefroy (James McAvoy), a knd young man her own age, she's intrigued; while he clearly scoffs at her writing style, he sees her talent, and is instrumental in helping her to learn more of the larger world by exposing her to more daring literature, modern pastimes not considered approrpriate for ladies of the time. As Tom begins to court Jane, she finds herself increasingly attracted to this poor but intelligent man, though she soon realizes her own ideas about love and marriage are sometimes at odds with the conventions of the society in which she lives.
