Basic Bedroom Themes

These bedroom decorating ideas are themed together with basic concepts and examples, so that it's easy to determine how you would like to design your own bedroom.

Decorating your bedroom with a theme is an easy way to change the whole environment and make your own bedroom feel like it's a private space away from the rest of your home. Pick a theme, any theme...or mix and match to create a custom look.

Asian Bedroom Theme

Decorations of the Orient...

Asian themed bedrooms are rich in ancient culture; based on earth elements, powerful creatures, animal symbols, and emotions.

Traditional Asian inspirations come from early paintings of nature scenes, such as bamboo, cherry blossoms, gardens, and waterfalls, where lighter colors such as jade green and sky blue is used. A bold and romantic Asian bedroom includes black lacquered furniture with red fabrics, low lighting, and gold accents. Modern Asian furniture and bedding streamlines shapes and minimizes colors to include influences, and includes many accents to pull the room together.

Ideas: Shoji screens, rice paper lamps, silk fabrics, tapestries, hand painted sculptures and porcelain, wall fans, paintings.

Bohemian Bedroom

Romantic and Casual

Bohemian bedroom themes should be nostalgic, romantic, casual, artistic, bold, and/or spiritual, no matter which culture you choose to blend with it. Bold uses of colors, patterns, textures, art, and flowing fabrics create a peaceful, relaxing environment. You want to mix and match multiple styles and include a lot of small pieces in the room to show a sense of creativity. This is a perfect room to display your vintage heirloom treasure and your bargains from local flea markets.

Cluster together multiple art pieces, figurines, sculptures, vases, clothing and jewelry in non-traditional spaces such as hanging racks and window sills. Create a casual conversation area with chairs, pillows, and thin covered foam pieces on the floor if you have a large bedroom, or use bench seats for a smaller space. Include draping fabrics over and around the bed, seating areas, and doorway to show a sense of constant flowing in and out of your bedroom.

Contemporary Bedroom Design

Simple, yet effective...

Contemporary bedrooms are very minimalistic and clean / well organized. Furniture and accents remain simple and modern - without intricate patterns and designs.

Large open spaces and a limited number of display pieces are the key concepts to contemporary interior design. Typical modern furniture pieces are low to the ground to allow for maximum window light and any industrial beams or architectural elements to remain the main focus. Window treatments should be light and airy. Although neural wall and fabric colors are essential, don't be afraid to use bold accent colors in abstract art pieces for more dramatic impact.

Old World Style Bedroom

Old and new treasures

Old world decorating style is the ultimate classy theme, brought together with the elegant antiques of Europe and a worldly sense of travel through many collections displayed. Woven tapestries, heavy brocades for upholstery and bedding, and intricate furniture are absolutely necessary to create this theme. Globes, world maps, tall bookcases stuffed with knowledge from different countries and time periods, and compasses are the perfect main bedroom accents. This is also a great room to include steampunk and hand crafted treasures.

Wardrobes, dressers, chests, vanities, etc. were the common storage units before closets were invented. The more intricate pattern the wood has, the better. Include frames canvas art pieces for authentic appeal, since posters and prints just won't look believable. Lighting should also be minimal, since electricity did not exist. Use candles, and have a few lanterns available that plug in and look like they are not electrical.

Tropical Bedroom Theme

A bedroom paradise...

Decorating a bedroom in a tropical theme is about bringing a little bit of paradise into your own space. Island style includes light wood furniture pieces and bountiful tropical foliage - trees, vines, flowers. Blues, greens, and neutral sand and seashell shades can be mixed throughout the room, with an inspirational bright or dark color as an accent. (Such as a dark red from a tropical bird, or deep purple from a flower).

Canopies and light flowing fabrics should be used to create a sense of rest and relaxation. Hide your mess and display only the most tropical treasures...if you're up to the task, a fish tank or birdcage is a fun and appropriate accent piece for your tropical bedroom design.

SouthWestern Bedroom Decorating

Southwest Desert Style

A Southwestern bedroom is neutral and has Earthy appeal...from the tan of the sand to the cool blue shades of the sky. You'll find traditional Southwestern patterned fabrics and textiles used for bedding, pillows, throws, and wall hangings. Pottery, sand art, clay vases, feathers, token animals, and Native American designs are commonly combined to theme this room together.

But it also can be nothing short of hot and spicy! Toss in the chili peppers with bold reds and adobe oranges for wall colors and fabrics. Instead of light woods, dark coffee brown and black furniture pieces/accessories will give your Southwestern bedroom rich and modern style.

Victorian Bedroom Theme

Intricacy to it's fullest...

Victorian style decorating is a mix and match of many early cultures, but brought together by England for a room full of vintage worldly treasures. The most common Victorian bedroom colors include dark jewel tones and lighter shades of pinks and greens.

Every main furniture piece in the room should blend together with the rest with finely detailed moldings and trims, including wooden or gold painted frames. Portrait paintings are popular of ancestors and current living family members. Fabrics for bedding and windows can be made from lace, silk, velvet, and brocades with heavy trims and tie-backs. Collections of porcelain, crystal, and flowers should be displayed on every open space available, including vanities and side tables. Fill up the room, and then fill it up some more when you think it's complete. :-)
