YES THE MOST OBVIOUS - A CAMERA

A few things to consider when buying that camera

Resolution - How large is your picture going to be? Do you want to start messing with the photo in editing software or do you simply want to take photos for your photobooks. Lower megapixel range for simple photos and higher ranges if you want to get into the professional stuff.

Optics - Again depending on your goals as a photographer consider consider optical zoom range for the real close up stuff. Do you really need the option of adding more lenses or filters for more effects.

Flash - Are you a complete novice? Look for features on the camera that will take all the hasle out of taking photos for you. Features like a full auto mode and red eye reduction.

Special Effects - Concentrate on taking good photos using just the basic techniques and essential equipment before graduating to the fancy stuff :)
If you are just starting out as a digital photographer then special features like movie modes or panoramic photo modes may just be 'nice to haves' but are not a real necessity.

Image Transfer - One issue that many beginners fail to take into account is how to get the images of the camera and onto your PC. Usually this is just a comfort issue. It could simply mean looking for transfer capabilities that you are already familiar with or matching the camera to your existing PC setup.

YOU, A CAMERA . . . . BEAUTIFUL PHOTOS!

These are the 5 best cameras that I have seen that would be suitable for your beginner photographer.

A PC OR LAPTOP

You Have Taken The Pictures .....Now What?

You have taken great pictures now it is time to organise them.
What type of computer you get depends on what your usage will be.
If all you want to do is save and store the photos, then even the least-expensive, low-end system can perform this task. When you want to work with your photos, look for more RAM memory over just processor power.

Just approach your friendly PC vendor with your particular needs. They will only be too happy to customise a base model for you from the dizzying array of features that are available.

CAMERA BATTERIES

You Can't Live With em .... You Can't Live Without em!!

Digital Cameras are power hungry.

A very good idea is to buy several sets of NiMH rechargeable batteries. They will pay for themselves! If you use good old Alkaline batteries you could be staring down the barrel of a hobby that will hit you hard in the hip pocket.

The trade-of between a feature rich digital camera and a beginner camera means there is usually a much larger drain on the batteries.

A handy tip is to buy an AC adapter if your camera didn't already come with one.
The best thing to do is to buy the recharger from the camera vendor that you bought your camera from. Make sure that it is compatible with your camera. Usually buying an accessory made by the same manufacturer of your digital camera is a safe bet.

A tip on conserving battery power.
Use the AC adapter when you are transfering images from your camera to your PC or if you have the capability of displaying the images from your digital camera on your TV.

Memory

Get the biggest Memory you can afford

The big digital camera manufacturer's usually provide memory of some form with your new camera purchase. However this is usually woefully inadequate when you want to take lots of holiday snaps.

But if you want to get the most out of your photo taking experience, then I suggest buying the biggest memory card you can comfortably afford. That basic 8 MB memory card that came with your camera won't last a day when you are on vacation.

Another tip is to get youself some spare memory cards, so you can keep going when you fill up your main card and are far away from your PC to download any images.
