HOW TO MAKE A SIMPLE HEMP CHOKER $$$

Ranked #16,591 in Fashion & Beauty, #357,140 overall

Any one can make these. Kids will love it too!

Do you Love Jewelry? Maybe want to start making it, and selling it for a little extra cash?? Or just want to learn a new hobby. Great for gift giving to friends and relatives.
Saving money, and earning more is a goal these day!

Here I will explain a simple Hemp Choker technique. You can convert this one design to endless other possibilities.

Hemp comes in different sizes of diameters. A variety of colors, and does not cost much. You can get it online, or just about any craft store. Some Hemp is more course than others, I prefer the smoother ones, as they are going to be around the neck. But even course Hemp will get more smooth after wearing.

An overview

I have been selling my art for over 35 years. I am a multi media artist . Sharing what I learn in the coming days and months will be a wonderful opportunity to help you and pass on what I have learned.

For this lens:
I am going to show you how to do this step by step choker and include two videos for a visual. At the bottom will be links to other areas to help you begin jewelry making. Where to buy your supplies, and information to help you start selling your crafts for extra money.

2009 THE YEAR OF THE NATURAL FIBERS

WHY NATURAL FIBERS?

Year of Natural Fibers CLICK HEREto see a fantastic array of fibers.
The International Year will shine new light on the wonders of Natural fibers and highlight their importance in alleviating poverty.................

Materials you'll need

Here are Items you will need:

1. A few beads
2. Hemp
3. A button
4. Glue
5. scissors
6. Beads, large enough for the hemp you chose can go through.

A average size is apx 16 for a small neck up to 20 inches for a large mans size.

In time you will learn how much Hemp to measure out for each, or buy a simple beading board.
This little tool, not only lets you lay out the design of beads, but helps you arrange them in the
exact location. It sizes for you, as you lay out the design.

I guesstimate my lengths. Apx. 16 feet for the outter strands, and 8 feet for the inner strands. A lot depends on the type of hemp you are using as well as how tight your knots are.

Better to have too much length than not enough.

Photo showing the two cut lengths folded in half

Ready to put the button Clasp on....

To Start cut out the two length above.
Fold them in half and put together.

You now have four stands, with a loop at the top. Make sure bottoms are even.

This location is where the button clasp will be. Mark it with a paper clip or something.
next you will be sliding the button on.

Step 2: Attaching the Button

Take one short strand and one long strand and thread through the back of the button you chose. IF you chose a four hole button, just go through the back up and over the top and back down with the two strands in a criss cross pattern.

You are just securing the button to the end before you begin knotting.

Step 3: Tie The Button on

Now, take all the strands and tie a simple knot to secure. Leave a little moving room for the button.

You are Ready to Begin!!

Tips to Start Selling Your works

Sample of a finished Hemp Choker with a different knot

1. Make sure before you start selling you have a inventory. Make up a dozen or so, to start.

2. Start a inventory lists on your computer or handwritten of what you have, the number of each or name. I like to name my pieces. LIke that first photos is called Thunder! People like names rather than a number.

3. get yourself a receipt book that has a copy for you and the customer.

4. Decide if you are going to try and find consignment areas, or will you do shows, or are you going to sell online.

5. Make or have made a card template.
This is what will go on every piece you own. It should be a design that will stay the same. A photo, your name of business, web address, contact info etc. You are now going to start "branding" your craft. Since this is jewelry, that is a part of the branding. My brand is
"Salzanos Nature inspired Art, Photography and Jewelry Designs" Nature inspired is my Brand. What will yours be??

6. Find out what the requirement in your state/city is for tax purposes. Call a CPA, contact online etc.

7. You are ready! Remember this is just a crash course, and their is stll much to learn. But start small so you are not overwhelmed. I would love to answer any questions and will lead you in the right direction.

Consignment verses Out right Selling

This photo is of a display I made with merchandise

The pros to consignment are:
1. It does not cost you upfront money
2. You will be getting exposure
3. Every town has somewhere where they will do consignment

The Cons are:
1. You are going to sit on inventory for who knows how long
2. Your things can get stolen and you do not get compensated from the store
3. You will pay the store/location a consignment fee from 20-40 percent of sales

The photo here is a old kitchen door I redid for a display. I attached the wires for earrings, and the velcro for the chokers. It is to go in a coffee spot near me. I do not do very many consignment areas. I find they are slow to bring in any money, and getting the right spot where people actually buy is tough. But in this economy I am back to using some.

Another tip. Do not over saturate your areas. For instance, do not have your items in one store, and then the same block another store. For one, it is not helping your consignment store to sell your items with two stores competing. They like to be exclusive. So keep one good area per town. Some stores will not have your items unless you sign a contract for limited area selling anyway.

I make up my own consignment list of what I put in and dates/costs. I have the store owner sign my copy as well. She will have her form, too. I just like to have two contracts to keep everything agreed upon on record.

Yolonda Shows us how to Block Dyed Handspun Wool Yarn

She is 77 years old this year. She is my mom. When Dad was alive, she and him raised sheep in Kimberly Oregon. She saved a lot of wool from her flocks back then. She washed the wool, carded the wool, spins it, felts it, and this little video she is blocking some newly dyed wool yarn for a custom knitting job. The wood blocker she is using on the floor my dad made for her. The drum lifts out, and you can put a new one on. Still doing many things in the old way. Using no electricity and making gorgeous products!

New Igo GREEN Tip of the Day

Tips and Extra Info

1. IF your inner two strands start to get too short before you are at the end, you can switch the outer ones to the inner ones and continue.
2. The button can be placed on either end. Beginning or at the last. Matter of choice.
3. Beads can be placed inside the with the inner strands or outside. Experiment and find a super new design.
