Beginning Readers

The first time my daughter read a book to me I was so excited and proud. Granted, it was only 9 pages long with 1-4 words on each page, but it was such an accomplishment for my just turned 5 year old.

This lens offers wonderful book ideas for beginning readers. The list contains my favorites as well as some that other mothers have suggested to me. I hope you find it helpful. :)

Getting Started with Bob Books

I really love Bob Books. A friend told me about them when my daughter was 4 years old. I waited a year and picked up the first set when she turned 5. She started reading them right away. She had already had two years of preschool at that point and new all of the letters and their sounds. Bob books start out really slowly building up the child's confidence. The books are color coded to show the progression in what they are doing. They know red is the easiest, then they move on to purple and end with green.

Advancing with Bob Books

My daughter stuck with the first set of Bob Books for a while and when she turned 6 we bought the second set. This set uses longer sentences with three-letter words and consistent short vowel and consonant sounds. We didn't push reading on her so she took it slowly. I wanted it to be something she likes to do not something that she considers a chore.

I really like this lens. I hope you don't mind me adding it to my list of my favorite featured lenses, on my own lens. My 3 yr old son absolutely loves reading. I am homeschooling him and I have tons of books for him. He can even read a few of the books on his own. My best tip is to start reading to your kids as early as possible, even if they are still in your tummy! Thank you for sharing! I will be adding several of the books listed to my son's collection.

My grandson is four, and will be doing this soon. In the meantime, he is helping me learn Spanish as he is totally bilingual. But I don't brag, not me.

Really enjoyable and informative lens, I've been working with early readers for years and love it when I see someone grasp the concept of 'words' linking together and making sense. Life-changing stuff...

My children never liked the Bob books very well but they loved the the Primary Phonics, Dr. Seuss and Dick and Jane books. Emergent Readers have limited vocabulary with illustrations that tell most of the story and help very beginning readers to feel successful right from the start. Thank you for sharing such good suggestions with us.
