Beginning Readers
The first time my daughter read a book to me I was so excited and proud. Granted, it was only 9 pages long with 1-4 words on each page, but it was such an accomplishment for my just turned 5 year old.

Recommended Series for 1st Graders
George and Martha: The Complete Stories of Two Best Friends
My daughter and I have read this series and I loved it. I was able to relate each of the short stories to her own life and it was great for initiating conversations with her. Topics like self esteem and speaking up when something is bothering you. My daughter really enjoyed them too.

- Wonderful list! I have 6 y/o granddaughter and 4 y/o grandson. Their mommy has already purchased the Bob books, and we have most of the Dr. Seuss, but I was glad to see your other recommendations! We cannot do too much to make reading fun for our children (and grandchildren!)

- The closest you may ever be to your kids is reading a book to them. I think it is the most important moment of the day with young children. It especially proved helpful with our oldest daughter who has a learning disability. Find out how she overcame it with the help of a reading specialist at Hey Teacher My Child Can't Read
