The Life Of Emil von Behring

Emil von Behring was born in Germany in 1854 on the 15th March in Hansdorf, West Prussia. He moved to Berlin in 1874, where he studied medicine at the Army Medical College until 1878. During his early life he was a military doctor until he became a Professor of Hygienics.
While working as a military doctor, Emil struggled financially and as a result he felt that he was not in a position to start a family. As a result he concentrated on his research and it was not until 1896 that he felt that he had the financial security to get married.
Behring married Else Spinola and the happy couple spent three months on honeymoon in Italy on the Island of Capri. Elise was twenty when she married Emil and she was born in Berlin in 1876. Her father Werner Spinola worked in the university medical clinic in Berlin.
In 1898 Behring was made a professor at the University of Marburg. At that time Marburg was still part of Prussia. It was here that he taught at the Faculty of Medicine at Marburg University and won the first Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1901. This was awarded for his work in developing a serum therapy for diphtheria and tetanus. On March 31st 1917, Behring died in Marburg, Germany.
Behring today would not recognize modern day Germany. As well as continuing to develop as a country offering excellent universities and research facilities, it is also a popular holiday destination.
Many people come on holiday to Germany and visit Hansdorf, the birth place of Behring. He would not believe the excellent holiday accommodation that is now available to tourists to rent as holiday accommodation. Berlin has some of the best self catering apartments in Europe and Behring would be stunned by the quality and luxury now available.
The great thing is that there are still many of the old apartments available to rent which are full of charm and character. So that lovers of architecture can indulge their passion for the subject, and people more keen on new properties can rent one of the many new modern holiday apartments that have been built in recent years.
