Pray for Peace

If you are visiting today, why not take just a moment a pray for peace.
World Prayers
Pray for peace. What else is there to say?

Kathleen Norris

Acedia and Me

Kathleen Norris' new book Acedia and Me promises to be as good or better than Cloister Walk and Dakota. If you scroll down to my Joy of Christianity, you'll find a link to Spirituality and Practice, which has both a review and a lengthy interview with Ms. Norris.

The Upper Room

The Upper Room
You may have been reading The Upper Room Devotional booklets for years. Many churches offer them for free or low cost, but if you've never visited their website, you're in for a treat. It's very large and is a lovely faith place in which to browse.

This Upper Room has nooks and crannies you may overlook if you just pay a flyby visit. Stay awhile and you'll discover their bookstore, advice on how to write a devotional for them, several lovely magazines, help with prayer, and many articles to strengthen and encourage you in your faith.

Wabi Sabi

The Beauty of Imperfection

Wabi Sabi says, among other things, that God is evident in and through the imperfect, the humble, the modest, and the unconventional.
Wabi Sabi
I was fascinated to learn years ago that expert pottery makers in Japan often intentionally include a small flaw in a piece when it comes from the kiln perfect. In humility they admit that God alone is perfect. Nice.

Christian Persecution

In over 40 countries of the world, Christians have little or no freedom to practice their faith. Worship is hidden, Bibles are confiscated if discovered, believers may be imprisoned for gathering in faith or for distributing God's Word.

We often take freedom of religion for granted in the USA and rarely give these modern day martyrs (yes, some are killed) a passing thought. Here's a site that offers us the opportunity to learn how blessed we are.
Voice of the Martyrs
The Voice of the Martyrs - Persecution.com - Servants of the Persecuted Church // Top Stories Olympic Persecution: China Confiscates Bibles Customs officials confiscated 315 Chinese Bibles from a Vision Beyond Borders team on Sunday, August 17, 2008. The Bibles were hidden in the group's suitcases.
PrisonerAlert.com
PrisonerAlert.com, a Ministry of The Voice of the Martyrs. Join in the vital and important ministry of intercession and solidarity with those who suffer for their faith in Christ.

There are different ways to help--prayer, of course, or by writing a letter to an imprisoned believer. The site explains how, and will translate the phrases of encouragement and Bible verses you have chosen, which you can then print and send to a prisoner.

The Book of Psalms

Words That Bring You into the Arms of God

Here's an extensive Christian site found today by googling Psalms. Background knowledge enhances any study and the Psalms are no exception. The more you know, the more you'll come to love them.

I often use a phrase that calls to me during either a sitting or journaling meditation. Sometimes that will turn into an article for my church or a shared meditation for my prayer group.

The Joy of Christianity

Wonderful Christian Sites from Different Denominations

My background is both Roman Catholic and Reformed and so far, these are the best web sites I've found. I am in love with the Christian faith and joyously share these sites to help you grow your own spiritual life.
Spirituality & Practice: Resources for Spiritual Journeys
This site is not only for Christians, but includes many other religions as well. The Brussat's have been reviewing spiritual books for years and now offer through the Internet, their listing of the best: books, movies, quotes, practices, and even teachers.

I am currently involved in an S&P 40 day course featuring quotes by Buddhist nun, Pema Chodron. My heart belongs and ever will to Christ, but I wouldn't have missed pondering and practicing this wisdowm for anything. There is nothing here that detracts or denies my Christian faith.
Welcome | Christian Classics Ethereal Library
This wonderful site offers not quotes or excerpts, but complete Christian books like The Dark Night of the Soul by St. John of the Cross and Confessions of St. Augustine to read on line or in pdf. If you are curious about any classic Christian book, check here first, they are constantly adding more books.
Pictures of Jesus 100 Pics! Jesus Christ Art Gallery/Store

Taizé - Br Roger and Taizé
Taize is a town in France which has given its name to a simple worship service of prayer and music. Please check here to read about it (click to hear some music.) My church in NJ holds a Taize service every Friday evening, if there's one near you, try it; it's beautiful.
Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church
I belong to a Reformed Church, but if I'm absent or need an extra sermon I go to this Presbyterian church via my computer. I used to listen to them Sunday mornings, but they're no longer on the radio. Pity.
Crown Financial Ministries
Ideally, our Christian faith should be a part of every aspect of our lives. In an age when so many people are in major credit card debt, Crown Financial Ministries is a God send. Good free on-line advice. I attended a small group workshop in my church and highly recommend it.
Religion & Ethics NewsWeekly | PBS
In the NY/NJ area the TV program airs Sundays at 6:30 on PBS. It's an excellent half hour magazine on religion & ethics. Enjoy the program or link to this companion site for the religious point of view on many important issues, from conservation to gays marriages. Not sensational, just good reporting.
GRATEFULNESS.ORG - A Network for Grateful Living
A Network for Grateful Living is a world-wide community for grateful life and action. Our mission is to challenge and inspire people to go beyond mere thanks-giving and find in grateful living the key to personal fulfillment and to a universal family spirit.

When you need some "gentleness" in your day or before you go to sleep, come here and light a candle, say a prayer, meditate with the "Angel of the Hour."
In His Steps
Short Christian devotional messages based on homespun illustrations and Bible passages. Charming.
Christian Poetry, Stories and Thoughts - Whatever Is Pure Ezine

Surfing the Squidoo Waters

wow, there are some great lenses swimming around out here!

Okay, I admit it--I'm easily sidetracked. When updating my own two lenses I sometimes surf the squidoo waters to check out other lenses for content, categories, tags, etc.
The Christian Literary Life: Don't Lose Faith Yet!
Found this outstanding lens while searching under Christianity. Lensmaker Keith Jennings asks the question, "What's wrong with popular Christian literature?" I've already gone to a couple of well chosen links on this high content lens and I'm looking forward to exploring further. Great stuff for me as a reader and writer. Thanks Keith!

Prayer E-Mails

A Rant and an Opportunity for You to Answer

Just curious how you feel about prayer e-mails.

Since this isn't a scientific poll, I can tell you my opinion: I dislike them. I would love a simple prayer, but there's always a catch or a hidden threat implied. When I read a beautiful prayer I feel so uplifted, until I come to the end where it tells me to send it on to 20 people then everything in my life will be blessed and I'll live happily ever after. Or, if I don't send it on, I'll have bad luck or the devil will win. So--my slant--from today whenever I receive one, I will e-mail the sender a personal blessing prayer with no strings attached, or copy their prayer minus all the nonsense and send it to them and whomever else I choose.

If you have another suggestion or you want to make a comment, please add it to my guest book. Nothing hateful, please.
