Benefits of Meditation

It is not possible to put into the words the importance of meditation to your quality of life. I know that in our fast paced lives, where demands are high and time is short that it may seem as though we do not have the time to meditate. It is this very reason that we need to take a moment or two for meditation. Meditating on a daily basis will help you alleviate stress and tension. You may be one of those people who doesn't believe that they need to meditate, that stress does not affect them. So I ask, how well do you sleep? Do you find it difficult at times to concentrate on what you are doing? Do you suffer from allergies, arthritis, high blood pressure or depression? Are you alive? If you answered yes to any of those questions, you should be meditating.

There has been a lot of research done lately to support the health benefits that meditation offers on a physiological level. Even the medical community recognizes that daily meditation can lower blood pressure, improve the way oxygen is used by the body, and improve blood circulation and heart function. Meditation is also key to deepening your spiritual connection. While you do not need to proclaim any certain religious affiliation to practice meditation, it will deepen your spirituality by allowing you to communicate with your inner self and achieve a state of mind that allows you to reflect on issues in your life and gain a better understanding of yourself.

Daily meditation will also provide you with a tool for letting go of all the daily negative influences that we all face. The better understanding that you are going to have of yourself will release you from continuing to try to rationalize actions and beliefs of others and then applying them to yourself. You are individual, and you have control over your body, mind and soul and how you interact with the world around you. Meditation will help you master that control.

The key to meditating for many of us, is finding a way to incorporate it into our already hectic schedules. What you need to realize is that your life is a meditation, you simply need to tap into that energy, and focus on it for moments at a time. There are many different types of meditation that allows you ways to easily incorporate these practices into whatever you do in your day. The key is for you to find the meditation practice that works for you.

Consider walking meditation, this is a meditation in action. In this type of meditation instead of focusing on an object, word, phrase or vision, your focus in on the movement of you body while you walk. You need to become mindful of your walk and the experience of walking. Obviously in this meditation you will not be closing your eyes as you would with other forms of meditation. This type of meditation is often found to be easier for many people because people feel as though they are doing something, and you can easily focus on the movement of your body, you are more aware of you body. This can actually make walking meditation a more profound experience for you then sitting and meditating.
There is also driving meditations. As with the waling meditation where your focus in on your body and motion when walking, with driving you and your car are one. Making yourself fully aware of yourself with the car and how it operates will allow you to use the car correctly and you will find that there is less stress and aggravation while driving. How many times have you gotten in your car and it has been like you are driving on autopilot, your mind is everywhere except on the car and the drive. With the amount of time we spend in our cars, finding useful use of that time that can actually make our lives better is essential.

A huge part of meditation is proper breathing, and focusing on deep breathing exercises. These deep breathing exercises you can do sitting in traffic in your car, standing in line at the grocery store or waiting for you dinner when out at a restaurant. You do not need hours of time, just ten minutes twice a day, is enough to change your life for the better. Ten minutes can be your shower in the morning, that extra ten minutes you have in between hitting the snooze button is enough time for meditation. If you can commit, you will see and feel the difference in no time.

If you are a religious person and would like to deepen that connection, use your prayer time as a time of meditation. Meditating through prayer will not take anything away from the prayer, it will actually deepen it. Prayer is the most widely practice and accepted form of meditation. It doesn't take much time, it only requires you to be consistent and persistent, and it is the one thing you can do everyday that will improve your physical, emotional, mental and spiritual state of being. Meditation is as essential to healthy living as breathing and eating.
