Wedding - Berlin's New Art Quarter
Art Galleries on Heidestrasse, Berlin
The hottest new area for exhibiting the artistic talents of young German and International Artists is Wedding. Heidestrasse, near Hauptbahnhof, is a hive of creativity, the entire street consiting of converted warehouses, posing as galleries in the new cool part of Berlin. Tired of expensive, overly touristy Prenzlauer Berg and over the recent craze of Neukoelln, the latest district Berliners are flocking to is Wedding. And where the young and hip Berliners go, the masses eventually follow. I can recommend the Tape Modern Gallery, house within Tape Club at 14 Heidestrasse, currently exhibiting, photographic and video art, installations and sculptures. The great thing about Tape is that you can browse the art exhibition, then head into the club, or just enjoy a few drinks in the exhibition hall itself. The photograph displayed here was my favourite piece from the exhibition, and is by Nina Hoffman, and "shows two human beings facing each other, yet everything but their faces are visible. The shared gazes are suggested, however, through their position in the frame creating a stylized re-enactment of an ordinary moment."
Another element I found intriguing about the photo was how real and 3-dimensional the hair appears to be on the figure in the foreground, and it almost seems to follow you as you walk past.
Also featuring exhibits are Mark Adelman, Axel Anklam, Maik Bluhm, Jana C. Ebert, Amir Fattal, Jesse Finley Reed, Andreas Gefeller, Moriz Hirsch, Dovat Meron, Erik Niedling, Ingo Niermann, Jonas Obleser, Carola Schmidt, Elisabeth Schulze, Thomas Schulze, Christopher Steadman, Alexander Wolf and Andi Zimmermann. The exhibition, Neun Arten von Gelaende, is curated by Erik Niedling and Amir Fattal.

Gutes Wedding, Schlechtes Wedding at Prime Time Theater - German Comedy Theatre
German Live Soap Opera on Stage
Prime Time Theater in Berlin Wedding is the home of the popular live German soap-opera Gutes Wedding, Schlechtes Wedding. For a fun night out and a great laugh I can highly recommend seeing the performance at least once. The format is similar to a TV soap opera in that the story continues from show to show, however each 'episode' is a complete story in itself, having a beginning and end to the story performed on the night. It's in German, but it is possible to enjoy the show and understand what's going on with only a basic understanding of the language, and even to get a lot of the jokes. When we attended there was actually a section of the performance in English, poking fun at the misunderstandings that can occur when one mixes up German words with English words, such as: "Do you eat some Koch%u2026 cake! I mean cake". Prime Time Theater is located at Müllerstraße 163, 13353 Berlin-Wedding, the entrance being around the corner on Burgsdorfstraße. Nearest train stop is Wedding on the U6, and the theatre is just down the road from there. For information on how to book tickets click here. Here is a poor attempt at a translation of the Prime Time Theater web page Understanding Berliners
Tips and Tricks to from a Resident

Berliner Schnauze
"Die Berliner Schnauze", which means "The Berlin Tongue" or "The Berlin Mouth", is a term used to describe the mannerisms associated with Berliners, specifically their tendency for getting straight to the point and saying what they feel. This often gets them the reputation of being of being unfriendly, mainly because, if you do something to inconvenience a Berliner somehow, they'll never hesitate to tell scold you. However it is said that the reason Berliners always say what they feel is because they have very big hearts and this they are only "speaking from the heart". Once you get to know Berliners better you'll find them far friendlier, and in fact you are likely to find them to be far more genuine, which comes from their honesty and directness, and in many cases Berliners can be some of the nicest people you could ever meet. They key is: "be patient, and don't judge people on first impressions".
That said, Berlin is making a big effort to change forever the perception that the city is unfriendly or unwelcoming. Berlin's official website, Berlin.de, has launched a campaign in May called Herz & Schnauze to ensure Berliner's make an extra special effort to be friendly and welcoming. The Berliner Morgenpost also featured an article on this subject. You can read a somewhat imperfectly translated version courtesy of Google Translate via this link to the Berliner Schnauze article.
Dog Lovers
There are more dogs than children in Berlin. This common, although I'm not sure if factual, statistic is quite evident when you walk around Berlin. Everyone seems to have a dog, and because they are allowed to go almost everywhere, including shops, trains and restaurants, people take full advantage and bring them with them almost everywhere they go.
English
Berliners are very modest about their English abilities; usually admitting that they're English is not so good, while they peruse James Joyce's Ulysses. The fact is any Berliner who says their English is not so good is probably almost fluent, or at least has ten-time better English than most English speakers have German. However you may on occasion come across some people who don't speak much, or any English. This is when your Leaving Certificate (A-levels, Final Exams) German comes in handy. When pushed, sometimes your only option is to try to speak some poorly constructed German.
The Language Barrier
If you need to fill in an official form, you can be almost certain that it is only available in German, and even if you speak a reasonable bit of German you can be almost sure there will be a number of large legal definitions that you won't understand. Why this is the case is to me unclear. In Ireland one can apply for a driving licence in English, Irish, Polish, German, French, Spanish, Latvian, Lithuanian and Estonian. In Germany you can apply in German. Be aware of this and bring your dictionary when attempting to complete the many official forms you'll need to fill in if you intend to stay in Berlin.
Bad Language
Unlike the Irish, who have invented are curse word for every situation, Berliners only really seem to use one or two; the most notable one beinh "scheisse", which means sh*t, or equally inoffensive variants like "scheissegal", which people use to say: "I don't give a damn/sh*t/f*ck", e.g. Das ist mir scheissegal. The point being we have at least three curse words for their one, which means Berliners curse a lot less than Irish people, perhaps predominantly because they'd only get bored of using the same words all the time.
Cycling
Berliners of all ages cycle a lot. They'd put most of our parents to shame. A common error of tourists is to arrive at Zoo station, walk out the door and walk straight onto the cycle path, a mistake they'll surely make only once. Due to very regular use of these cycle lanes, you are more than likely to be immediately blasted by bicycle bells, which must, by law, be fitted on all bikes in Berlin, and cyclists will surely use them if you're in their way.
Obeying the Rules
If the man is red you wait. If the man is green you can go. That's the rule. Of course, most people will cross on red at a pedestrian crossing if there is nothing coming and it's quite clearly safe. Not Berliners. And if you cross on red while a Berliner waits for the green man, they will more than likely tell you what you're doing is wrong.
Driving
Berliners seem to impatient drivers, and in some cases are intolerant of the smallest of errors. And if you do something wrong, even something minor, whilst driving in Berlin, someone will probably let you know. For example, unlike in many countries, where you go on green, in Berlin you go on amber, and if you aren't beginning to move on amber you will be 'gently' reminded by the horns of at least three drivers behind you. But despite their attention to rules and despite the ridiculously rigorous driving lessons and tests required in order to receive your licence, I noticed a number of drivers who demonstrated very bad habits whilst I was regularly driving around Berlin on a delivery job. Perhaps due to the predominantly flat landscape of Berlin, many drivers don't seem to use their handbrakes when they are stopped at lights, or their footbrakes for that matter. Inevitably I have noticed on a number of occasions that the car in front is slowly rolling back towards me until, luckily, the driver realised.
Disobeying the Rules
Despite sticking hard and fast by most of the rules, Berliners seem to have no problem letting their dogs drop a number two at any given time in any given place. This is a fineable offence but nobody pays any attention to it, since it is never enforced. Hence, best to watch your step, especially when it's dark.
Motorways
As for driving on motorways, people seem to take on a whole different persona once they hit the motorway. Forget the rules, forget about safety; the faster they can go the better. The misconception is that all German motorways, or Autobahns, do not have speed limits. The fact is that some sections of the Autobahns do have a speed limit of 130km/h, a fact that German's seem to completely ignore as they zip past in 180km/h in the outside lane.
No Boots, No Hard-Hat... never mind
Perhaps due to the fact that there are just too many rules on building sites in Berlin, workers seem to have decided to ignore all of them, sauntering around in runners and baseball caps with a bottle of beer in hand.
Sundays
Almost everything is closed on Sundays. Sunday is a day of rest. That's the rule, and even though Berlin is sometimes said to be one of the most atheist cities in Europe, people seem to want to stick by the 'day of rest' rule. With the exception of a few special cases, supermarkets, fashion stores and most other types of shops are closed on Sundays. Cafés, restaurants, pubs and cinemas are open though. In addition almost all Berlin museums are open on Sundays, which is sometimes a good excuse to visit them, since you'll have nothing better to do.
Nightclubs
On the contrary, unlike shops whose opening hours are restricted and banned on Sundays, Nightclubs are allowed to stay open all night, with no statutory closing time. The night ends when the revellers start to dwindle. That's the rule. When everyone else starts to leave, that's when it's time for you to go home too. Or is it? In many cases people aren't actually going home, but instead they're moving on to the next club, which is only starting to kick off.
Staring
Some people think Berliners stare at them a lot, especially on the U-Bahns and S-Bahns. I can say that it has been a problem for me. Maybe people on the receiving end of the stares are particularly good looking, or maybe they are just a little too self conscious. Either way I find reading on the train is a great way to pass the time, and it will give you something else to think about other tham whether people are looking at you. I was never much of a reader before, citing a lack of time as an excuse. So now I have at least 40 mins every day in which to read... it's better than nothing. And in this time I've discovered and finished some great books, including The Reluctant Fundamentalist, John McAhern's "The Pornographer", The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy and the sequels, The Road by Cormac McCarthy, author of No Country for Old Men. And if you don't like to read, just bring your iPod, close your eyes and drift away in a world of your own. Don't miss your station though!

Xenophobe's Guide to the Germans
Xenophobe's Guide to the Germans
Xenophobe's Guides - an irreverent look at the beliefs and foibles of nations, almost guaranteed to cure Xenophobia.
Reviews:
"Xenophobe's Guides which give a wickedly satirical look at the foreigners we love to hate... "
--"Cambridge Evening News"
"An enlightened new series, good natured, witty and useful. The Xenophobe's Guides to different nations deserves a real cheer. "
--"The European "
Quotes:
"Virtually all Germans have health problems, and if they don't, there must be something wrong with them.
Most of what ails them is stress related. No nation was ever more stressed, but this is understandable. After all, running Europe can take it out of you.'
Xenophobia is an irrational fear of foreigners, probably justified, always understandable."
"Because life is ernsthaft, the Germans go by the rules. Schiller wrote, "obedience is the first duty," and no German has ever doubted it. This fits with their sense of order and duty. Germans hate breaking rules, which can make life difficult because, as a rule, everything not expressly permitted is prohibited."

A taste of the German capital
Berlin Restaurant Guides
My Favourite Restaurants in Berlin
Thai InsideServing the most extravagant curry dish I've ever seen, this delicious spicy Thai Green Curry, had exactly what I was looking for in a Thai dish, but Thai Inside add their own distinct touch with strange and colourful tropical vegetables. Located just up the road from Hackesher Markt, and with very affordable prices, Thai Inside is worth a visit for any Asian food lover.
Diener Tattersall
Diener Tattersall, established by the boxing hero Franz Diener, and is a 1950s style German pub, serving basic German food. The walls are decorated with photographs of 1950s personalities, including post-fight pictures of Franz Diener himself, kitted out in his boxing gear. It is located just past the bridge at Savignyplatz.
Clärchens Ballhaus
This very old fashioned looking restaurant and ballroom, which has been hosting dances since 1913, serves some of the tastiest, most tender, and reasonably priced steaks I have ever had the pleasure of eating. Clärchens Ballhaus attracts a mixed crowd of young visitors and older regulars both to the evening dances and daytime brunches. With its in- and outdoor seating on Mitte's arty Auguststrasse, it perfect for any time of day.
Dolores
In a city where Mexican food seems quite rare, Dolores café specialises in, and perfects the art of Burritos. Some like it hot, and proper spicy chillies are available for those who can handle the heat. Enjoy your meal with a beer or a bionade, a range of coffees or teas, or a selection of soft drinks. Order from the set menu for a delicious meal wrapped and ready in minutes, or select your own toppings. The choice is yours.
Burrito connoisseurs can opt to:
1) First choose a main dish
2) select a type of salsa
3) then choose a type of rice and a type of beans
4) next select a type of meat/tofu
5) an finally choose extra fillings
Each of these 5 steps has between 5 and 8 choices.
Or you can revert to the set menu and add extra toppings if you wish.
Paris Bar
This popular Charlottenburg restaurant serving excellent French cuisine, frequented by film stars, artists and writers, and decorated with the work of various painters, was the venue for a notable Iggy Pop Interview with Rolling Stone magazine, after which Iggy was seen rolling around on the sidewalk outside the restaurant.
Advance booking is a must, since it appears to be full every time I pass it. Paris Bar's menu is about as pricey as you would expect for a restaurant of it's status, but probably worth a visit, just to say you were there. I would certainly compliment the chef, whose rabbit dish, though it tasted like chicken, was probably the best chicken-like meal I every ate.
Unsicht Bar
Do we really need to see our food to enjoy it? Do we dare eat what we cannot see? Can we even manage to eat without making a mess when are unable to use the sense we often take for granted? Unsicht-Bar Restaurant in Prenzlauer Berg in Berlin lets you find out the answers to these questions.
All in One
Berlin is famous for its Kebabs, or Kebaps, as they are know here. But surely the best Kebab I have ever tasted was the fantastic example served to me by the masters of the art of kebab making, All in One, located near Hackesher Markt. A simple take-away type restaurant, with the know how and right ingredients, this is the place to try your first Berlin kebab, and certainly your most memorable one.
Cheapest Prepay Mobile Phone Service Provider in Berlin?
... the Best Value Network
Klar Mobil are by far the best value prepay service provider in my experience. With calls at 9 cent per minute and texts at just 9c each they are far better value than any of the 4 major providers, Vodafone, O2, E-Plus and T-Mobile.There is also a 2nd tariff where calls are 3 cent per minute and texts are 13 cent, which will suit people who call more and text less. I'm a big texter so the 9 cent tariff suits me best. These rates compare to the 19c per text rate on the major providers. T-Mobile offer a 5 cent rate to other T-Mobile customers but to any other network it's still 19c.
Klar Mobil combines the benefits of prepay will some of the benefits of pay monthly price plans, but without the downside of a 1 or 2 year contract. Whilst the payment for your call credit is taken out of your bank account once a month you can cancel your account at any time. The benefit of this system is that you never run out of credit, leaving yourslef unable to make a call. They simply take eur10 out of you account once a month and that is your credit. And if you use that up they will charge you the additional amount at the end of the month.
The other great thing is that you choose what to spend your credit on, as is usually the case with prepay, where as with pay monthly you're often tied to specific packages of minutes that you may or may not use, and yet you are still charged the monthly rental fee.
For the best of both worlds choose Klar Mobil.

Dining in Darkness is Delightful at Berlin's Dark Restaurant
Do we really need to see our food to enjoy it? Do we dare eat what we cannot see? Can we even manage to eat without making a mess when are unable to use the sense we often take for granted? Unsicht-Bar Restaurant in Mitte in Berlin lets you find out the answers to these questions.Sight is without question the most important of our five senses. In this fast moving world, our eyes are constantly working overtime. Throughout the day, our eyes have to comprehend process and evaluate thousands of visual messages. Hence the other senses have unwillingly become less important. At Unsicht-Bar you will enjoy the unusual experience of eating in complete darkness, an extremely unusual and exhilarating experience. By voluntarily abandoning your visual impulses you will be able to experience the wonderful capabilities of your others senses, particularly your taste receptors.
Upon arrival you are greeted in the foyer and given the opportunity to choose your main course from the bi-lingual menu. All other aspects of your meal, such as how it is prepared, what the starter and desert consist of, and what flavour your soup will be, are described only vaguely and cryptically. You are then introduced to your waiter, who will speak German or English, according to your preference, and will safely lead you into the darkness in a Conga line.
The darkness evoked in us some unexpected feelings of fear and loneliness. Firstly I felt a sense of fear that I would never be able to find my way to my seat. Our waitress, Angela, of course quelled these fears with her flawless guidance. Similarly to all the waiting staff, Angela was blind, and was entirely comfortable with her surroundings, describing to us as exactly where to find our cutlery, glasses, the bottle of wine, and later, our food. She also gave us tips on accurate pouring of wine when you can't see what you are doing. As Angela left the table both my partner and I then felt a strange sense of loneliness, as if we'd been left alone in the dark. It was an odd and unexplainable feeling, since we were fully aware that we were surrounded by chatting diners, albeit that they were entirely invisible to us. This feeling was also quickly usurped by feelings of excitement and intrigue as we discussed this strange and extraordinary experience, which has also been enjoyed by celebrities such as Matt Damon, John Malkovich and Natalie Portman .
Our meal was unforgettable culinary experience, each flavour emphasised and we ascertained its texture and taste. "Oh, I think I just ate a parsnip, or was it potato?" for example, was not an unusual addition to the conversation. Angela advised that if we needed her we only had to call her name, something I did not need to do until the end of the evening, since she always returned at ideal intervals to collect our plates and serve the next delicious course. When I did call her for assistance, I barely raised the level of my voice, not wanting to shout across the busy restaurant, though I was unsure if anyone other than my partner would have heard me. But within a minute Angela was beside the table ready to help us leave the dark restaurant area. After paying outside, the real menu was revealed to us, allowing confirmation, or in some cases contradiction, of what we thought we were eating.
A trip to Unsicht-Bar at Gormannstrasse 14, Mitte, is a must for any visitor or resident of Berlin, though the experience does not come cheap. Expect to pay approximately Eur40 to Eur60 for a three or four course meal. However, I believe it is something that is worth doing at least once in your life.

...and the Wall came tumbling down

On the 9th of November 1989, the Cold War came to its definitive end, without a single shot being fired. As the Berlin Wall fell piece by piece, and East-Berliners flooded into the West, some for the first time in their lives, the Iron Curtain rose and re-united Eastern and Western-Europe.
Twenty years on, Berlin is celebrating two decades of reunification, staging a range of events throughout the year. Accompanied by guests from around the world, with contemporary witnesses as well as public personalities, the city will celebrate this unforgettable event.
This poignant moment in history will be remembered in particular from the 7th to 9th of November, with the Festival of Freedom taking place on both sides of the Brandenburg Gate, the symbol of the German capital. This event will be attended by famous artists, cultural figures and prominent politicians, the highlight of which will be the staging of a symbolic fall of the Wall using a 'domino effect', featuring oversized stones designed by the youth of Germany.
The Berlin Wall
The Berlin Wall: A World Divided, 1961-1989
Except from a review by Anne Applebaum from The Washington Post
This book tells the story of this strange piece of architecture -- that is, how the Berlin Wall was built, and how it then suddenly, and strangely, ceased to exist. It's a story we think we know, since the outlines have long figured in headlines. But as Frederick Taylor demonstrates in this new history, it's also a story with odd twists and hidden secrets, many only recently revealed, some that have been forgotten and are worth repeating.

Museum Renovation Completed Eur30,000 Under-Budget

The long awaited Eur30million under-budget renovation by British Architect David Chipperfield in conjunction with conservation Architect Julian Harrap is complete, and the Museum has now been re-opened to the public. It once again houses collections from the ägyptisches Museum Berlin (Egyptian Museum), including the iconic "Bust of Nefertiti", and exhibits from the Museum of Pre and Early History.
The Neues Museum is located on Berlin's Museuminsel (Museum Island) among other museums such as the Pergamon, Bode and Altes Museum. Originally designed by Architect Friedrich August Stüler and constructed between 1841 and 1859, it was destroyed by the British in World War II. Now, 60 years later a British architect has restored and re-presented it to Berlin.
Germany loves Chipperfield. Many of his seminal works are here, including the the Galerie am Kupfergraben, which is also located on Museum Island. However, the Neues Museum is set to be his finest masterpiece to date.
The new design approach was neither a full restoration nor a complete remodelling, but rather, one of timeless integration. Following the guidelines of the Venice Charter, Chipperfield's design respects the historical structure in its different states of preservation. We are gently reminded of the Museum's historical scars, and exhilarated by its newly re-mastered spaces.
Such a modest design and restoration approach has resulted in the project coming under budget, from Eur230m to Eur200m; an unusual outcome for national projects of this nature. Chipperfield's humility is to be praised for not competing with the splendour of this ruin, but instead serving to highlight its magnificence: a thoughtful and brave strategy for any Architect.
The public had access for 3 days in March to view the building in its empty splendor. However, the official opening, showcasing its new collection has proven to be the cultural highlight of the year for Berlin. Since re-opening the museum has been inundated with visitors, so much so that you need to book your visit for a particular timeslot. That is, you choose a 30 minute period during which you can enter the museum, but you can stay as long as you want. Rosinenbomber (Candy Bomber) Tours
In Memory of the Berlin Blockade

The 12 May 2009 marked the 60th Anniversary of the end of the Berlin Blockade enforced by Stalin in an attempt to force the Allies out of western Berlin. On 12 May 1949 the Soviet Union lifted their barricades, restoring access to the city, thus admitting defeat thanks to the heroic efforts of American, British, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand and South African pilots who facilitated the Berlin Airlift. These brave pilots supplied approximately 2.3 million tons of food, medicine, coal, and other goods to the citizens of western Berlin on 278,000 flights over the 15 month period of the blockade. Their efforts were remembered today at Templehof Airport.
Notably, the pilots also dropped chewing gum and chocolate bars tied to handkerchief parachutes from what became known as the Rosinenbomber, meaning Raisin Bomber or Candy Bomber. Candy Bomber Tours are now available in English from Air Service Berlin, who also offer Helicopter and Hot Air Balloon Tours of Berlin, as well as Tandem Skydiving jumps.
The Berlin Candy Bomber Story
The Berlin Candy Bomber
The Berlin Candy Bomber is a love story-how two sticks of gum and one man's kindness to the children of a vanquished enemy grew into an epic of goodwill spanning the globe-touching the hearts of millions in both Germany and America.
In June 1948, Russia laid siege to Berlin, cutting off the flow of food and supplies over highways into the city. More than two million people faced economic collapse and starvation. The Americans, English, and French began a massive airlift to bring sustenance to the city and to thwart the Russian siege.
Gail Halvorsen was one of hundreds of U.S. pilots involved in the airlift. While in Berlin, he met a group of children standing by the airport watching the incoming planes. Though they hadn't asked for candy, he was impressed to share with them the two sticks of gum he had in his possession. Seeing how thrilled they were by this gesture, he promised to drop more candy to them the next time he flew to the area.
True to his word, as he flew in the next day, he wiggled the wings of his plane to identify himself, then dropped several small bundles of candy using parachutes crafted from handkerchiefs to slow their fall. Local newspapers picked up the story. Suddenly, letters addressed to "Uncle Wiggly Wings" began to arrive as the children requested candy drops in other areas of the city.
Enthusiasm spread to America, and candy contributions came from all across the country. Within weeks candy manufacturers began donating candy by the boxcar.
In May 1949, the highway blockade ended, and the airlift ended in September. But the story of Uncle Wiggly Wings and the candy-filled parachutes lives on-a symbol of human charity.
Berlin Carnival of Cultures Festival
Berlin Celebrates Diversity
From May 21st to 24th 2010 Berlin once again hosts the Carnival of Cultures, a four-day street festival featuring a parade and parties throughout the city. Approximately 1.45 million spectators from all over the world peacefully celebrated the cultural richness of the German capital at the 14th annual Carnival of Cultures in May 2009.The Carnival of Cultures festival of Berlin brings together artists, dancers and other performers that reflect Berlin's cultural diversity. With traditional and modern themes that reflect Berlin's ever-changing landscape, every culture is afforded the opportunity to promote their talents. This event is a must see for any Berlin tourist or resident.
Berlin, with a population of 3.4million, is complimented by a diverse population of 450,000 non-Germans and many more with mixed ethnic backgrounds. The carnival was developed in 1995 to positively promote this cultural and ethnic diversity.
Applications are now being taken for the 15th edition of the Berlin Carnival of Cultures, which will take place on the 23rd of May 2010. If you have something beautiful, astonishing or just interesting you want to present in an artistic way to thousands of Berliners and visitors from all over the world you can take part in the street parade. If, instead, you want to perform on one of the stages in the upcoming street festival, take a look and find out how to take part as an artist.

'real-' Berlin Marathon 2010
Run for Your Wife!!!
But this event is more that just a Marathon. With alternative In-Line Skating (Rollerblading) events being held, over 70 live bands playing on the days of the Marathons, and the intense stadium-like experience of conquering the final 400 metres as you run or skate through Brandenburg Gate and past the atmospheric grandstands, packed with spectators.
It's also the Inline-Skating event of the year, being the finale of the World Inline Cup, but the professionals and those skating just for fun race together, making it a worthy season finale for all participants. Skaters from all over the world will make the voyage to Berlin to participate in the events and to party like only Berlin can, after the events. Classic Roller-Skating buffs will be pleasantly surprised to find that they are also permitted to participate in the Inline-Skating Marathon. And there's something for the kids too: earlier in the day a kids skating mini-marathon will also take place. In addition to the marathon event, the Inline Village Fair, held at Brandenburg Gate on the day, is sure to attract the attention of skating enthusiasts.
The 2009 Marathon was massive successes with the weather being perfect on both days, and 7,500 skater and 40,000 runners attending. Having taken part in the skating Marathon, and completing it, I highly recommend taking part in what may be a once in a lifetime experience, or a regular event in your calendar.
Entry to both Marathons is open to the public, subject to a health questionnaire, and will soon be able to begin registering online for the 2010 event. Choose between a full 42 kilometre Running Marathon and the In-Line Skating Marathon.
If you're looking for somewhere to stay in a central location within Berlin, where the prices are reasonable you'll Berlin Accommodation options here.

Berlin's Transport System
Getting Around Berlin is Easy
If there are two things that all Berliners seem to agree on, it's that the health system is efficient (but expensive) and that the transport system is efficient. Germans like things to be efficient and I have to say I agree with them on BVG's management of Berlin's train, bus and tram network.Berlin is a big, big city! But of all the cities I've been to, and I've been to a lot of cities, it's one of the easiest to get around, with a well integrated network of underground and over ground trains, trams and buses, not to mention their excellent road infrastructure and extensive cycle-lane facilities. But you should get yourself a map to help you navigate the city, which is very clearly signposted, even featuring the numbers of the building on a particular block on the signpost.
U-Bahn and S-Bahn
The U-Bahn (Untergrund-Bahn), meaning Underground Train, is like London's Underground, only the train lines are far closer to the surface than most of London's Tube lines. This makes it much handier to run down and hop on the next train, which will usually come within 3 minutes during the day. The S-Bahn (Schnell-Bahn) meaning Fast Train travels mostly over ground and is interconnected with the U-Bahn, usually having stops either in the same stations or in adjacent stations, and are also very regular.
Please note that due to essential reparations the S-Bahn service is severely effected. Read more on the S-Bahn problems.
Buses and Trams and Regional Trains
I find I don't need to use the buses very often, but when I do they are also frequent, and don't seem to get stuck in too much traffic, unlike in cities like Dublin. Sometimes a bus can be useful as it may take a more direct route than the trains to a particular destination, e.g. The 101 Bus from Charlottenburg to Zehlendorf. Trams are mostly found in the east of Berlin, and are also well connected to the U-Bahn lines. There are also the RE Trains, which are a regional trains that run through Berlin, and can also be used.
Transportation Maps
Get a pocket U-Bahn/S-Bahn map as soon as possible so that you can easily refer to it without having to find one at the station resulting in you missing a train, and rather than trying to follow the limited on-train map, which may lead to you getting off at the wrong station.
Stations
In most areas of Berlin, you will probably have a U-Bahn or S-Bahn station within a 10 minute walk of your residence. It is useful to have a good map of Berlin to find out where the stations are, though they are usually very easy to spot, being denoted by a large blue square with a white U for the U-Bahn and a large green square with a white S for the S-Bahn.
Tickets
The great thing is that the tickets are interchangeable throughout on all of the trains, trams and buses in Berlin, as long as they are valid. You can travel anywhere within zone AB for Eur2.10. You can travel 3 stops for Eur1.30 using a Kurzstrecke (short trip) ticket. An ABC ticket, which you would need to travel to Schönefeld Airport, costs Eur2.80. I recently found out that you can catch the regional trains, e.g. the RE7, to Schönefeld using the normal ABC ticket, allowing you to get there much quicker, as long as you time it well. Check the timetable online in advance.
All tickets are valid for 2 hours, but are not valid for your return journey, even if it is within the 2 hour limit. It's one of those annoying terms & conditions that you have to put up with on what is primarily a good service.
Cycling
Berlin is ideal for cycling around, with its predominantly flat topography and network of cycle lanes (more so in western Berlin). If you are planning to live in Berlin you can usually find a cheap second-hand bike on Craigslist.com. I got a basic mountain bike for Eur60. Just visiting? Rent a bike from Deutsche Bahn's Call a Bike service. You'll see these bikes everywhere, as well as regular cyclists, since cycling is extremely popular, and a very convenient and easy way to get around Berlin.
Berlin Einzelfahrausweise = Tageskarten - Advent Weekends
Berlin AB, BC and ABC Single Tickets are valid as Day Tickets till Christmas
Since June 2009 there has been considerable problems with the S-Bahn service. As an apology for the very limited transport supplied, Deutsche Bahn has promised compensation schemes to all S-Bahn customers as a goodwill gesture.Single tickets are upgraded to day passes on the weekends of advent, that is 28-29th of November, and 5-6th, 12-13th and 19-20th of December 2009. A single ticket for the appropriate fare zone and be able to solve the entire day to 3 clock the next day all public transport of the VBB, including U-Bahn, S-Bahn, Trams, Buses and Regional Bahn. The same applies to the single bicycle ticket. In addition monthly tickets have been discounted by 15 euros and all monthly passes that begin in December 2009 will be valid for seven additional days.
This offer is ideal for those who want to visit the many Christmas markets in Berlin or travel from place to place to buy Christmas gifts.

Deutsche Post Locations - Letter Boxes, Post Offices, Stamp Machines
Including Opening Time and Collection Times
Ever almost forgotten a birthday of someone back home? Haven't we all. Sometimes knowing the collection times could mean the difference between the card arriving on time or not. And with the Deutsche Post Locations search tool you can find the locations of all the letter boxes in an area, plus all of the collection times at each box. You can even refine the results to only display boxes after or before a certain time. Some of them have much later or earlier collections than others, and might only be minutes away from your usual box. You can also search for post offices, refining the results by locations that are still open, or that open at around a certain time. You can also search for stamp dispensers, some of which are located outside and so are operational 24 hours a day. Berlin Information & News in English

The Local
The Local is an online magazine, operating in a number of countries, including Germany. Read Germany's news in English, with stories on what's hitting the headlines, travel news, a "what's on" guide and a jobs section. The rest of the site is great though.

It also features a broad guide to "what's on in Berlin" and a classifieds section.

1) City Wohnen

These apartments are ideal for medium to long-term rental, for people who don't intend to live in Berlin permanently, or have not yet found work, since they often allow short-medium stays, many of them them are furnished and you don't need to prove that you have a regular income, unlike with the ordinary unfurnished rental properties aimed and people intending to stay long term or even permanently, as many Berliners do. Learn German in Berlin - a list of Language Schools
Berlin Language Schools
As an aid to study but not as an entire solution try Deutsche Welle, an online course with a range of teaching and revision methods top help you improve your German.
Recommended German Language Schools in Berlin
- Volkshochschule, Berlin
- Die Neue Schule, Berlin
The Volkshochschule offer the cheapest German language course, as far as I know, at approximately eur100 per month, but is not the best course by any means. However, although I have heard that the classes are often large and their teachers can be less than brilliant, if you are in Berlin with no job and/or limited funds, and you want to improve your German, perhaps to help you get a job, then this school is worth a try. At least it gets you out there speaking the language every day. Apparently you can be lucky at times too, getting smaller classes and better teachers, depending on which branch of the school you join.
Die Neue Schule, on the other hand, is a very good German language school, where classes are small (usually less than 12 people) and involve the perfect ratio of grammatical lessons to improve your knowledge and conversational exercises to improve your confidence to actually speak the language. Having attended this school I can highly recommend it. Try to get into Anja's class - she was a great teacher, but there are also numerous other very good teachers on their staff. However, it is quite expensive at eur75 per week, but as they say: "you get what you pay for". It's worth mentioning that Die Neue Schule still charge substantially less than the Goethe Institute, the most well known language school in Berlin.

Best Translation Tool
German to English, German to English, and a range of other language options
Ok, so there really is no translation tool available as yet that is 100% reliable. In fact I think it's safe to say that you can't get much better than 50% acccurate translations from the best of the bunch. However, I have found that Google translate has improved drastically on recent months. Apart from the redesign, it really is getting more accurate. I usually find the best bet is to use Google Translate in conjunction with Dict.cc so that if you spot an incorrectly translated word in Google Translate, you can look for a list of alternative translations in Dict.cc. Here are the links to these two, and a range of other translation tools. Between the lot of them you're bound to get the correct translation in the end.--- Google Translate - text translation tool

An Alternative to Fashion
Not every shopper is looking for the same type of fashion items, regardless of what is considered "in fashion". Things to do in Berlin When You're Bored
What's open on Sundays in Berlin: The Day of Rest Phenomenon
Having become accustomed to the highly commercialised nature of life in Dublin over the past decade, a lifestyle that was primarily fueled by Ireland's "Celtic Tiger" economic boom, where extended opening hours and trading 364 days a year was the norm, I was extremely surprised, upon moving to Berlin, that the majority of businesses still close on Sundays and Bank Holidays.Berliners are very protective of their day of rest and public holidays, and though there has been talk of a change to this policy, it has been met with such resistance that it has do date remained unchanged. This begs the question of what to do on Sundays and Bank Holidays in Berlin, assuming you are not one to rest on your laurels. Well, what's open on Sundays and what other activities can you do.
I have put together a list of suggestions, which I intend to build on as I discover more ideas:
Indoor Flea Market
After two successful Flohmarkt events on Sunday the 6th and 20th of December, starting January, the Sunday Extraordinaire Indoor Flea Market will be held weekly.
Start Time: Sundays at 12:00
End Time: 20:00
Venue: .HBC
Street: Karl Liebknecht Strasse 9
Town/City: Berlin, Germany
Directions: Map
Details:
INDOOR FLOHMARKT in the .HBC
A fantastic mixture of collectors items, useful utensils, clothing, intense items.
An indoor Sunday event with second-hand rarities and unique amusement and awesome food, live acts, DJs, rock n roll and love to get you out of the Sunday blur.
Got stuff to sell?
Set up your own table at the Flea Market:
- Stands Eur7 per day, except food stands, which are Eur10 per day.
- Rental cover the space, but no equipment is currently provided- you'll need to bring everything you need (tables, chairs, etc.)
- To reserve a space simply email fleamarket@hbc-berlin.de
Wannsee Strandbad Beach
A beach in Berlin you say?! Yes, although Berlin has no coastline, it does have beaches, which although man-made, are almost as good as any beach in many ways. Wannsee Strandbad, located just down the road from Nikolasee S-Bahn station, is adorned with acres of soft, fine, stoneless sand, taken from the North Sea. You can swim in the water, which is also shallow enough for kids to paddle in at some locations along the shore. There is a segregated nudist section of the beach too (if you like that sort of thing).
If you get hungry or thirsty there are a few take away food outlets along the beach itself, and should you fancy an alcoholic beverage, that too is available at a reasonable price. As far as I could tell there was no one preventing people from bringing their own alcohol either, though glass bottles were understandably prohibited.
Entry to the beach is Eur4 to gain access to the beach, which is open till 7pm on summer weekdays, and till 8pm at the weekend, including Sundays. For more info check out the Wannsee Strandbad website.
Berlin's Museums
Many of Berlin's Museums are open on Sundays. Here is a great website that provides a list of all of Berlin's numerous museums, which you can search for by "type of museum". It also features a section detailing a selection of the most popular museums in Berlin.
Shopping on Sundays and Bank Holidays
Should you find ever yourself stuck for a litre of milk and you don't want to pay the ridiculously inflated price of Eur2.19 in a petrol station shop, or if you suddenly realise you have no food for dinner, or whenever you urgently need a bottle of wine to bring with you when visiting friends, you will be please to know that the Kaisers in Hauptbahnhof is open on Sundays and Bank Holidays, as is the Rossmann and a variety of other shops in this busy train station. Another alternative for those living further west is Ulrichs supermarket at Zoologische Garten train station. It's a large supermarket with prices closer to Kaisers than to the likes of Pennymarkt and Lidl, but it's still a better option than the petrol station shops.
Get Some Exercise
There is always the option to go for a jog in lush greenery of Tiergarten, take the S7 S-Bahn line out to Grünewald station with your bike (or rent a bike from Deutsche Bahn's Call a Bike service), and take a leisurely cycle through the beautiful landscape that is Grünewald, or get out your Rollerblades and go for a skate around the flat smooth surfaces around the Reichstag and the nearby walkway along the Spree, towards Hauptbahnhof.
Watch this space for more ideas for things to do on Sundays and Bank Holidays in Berlin, which I will share with you as I discover them.

The European Music Awards - O2 World Arena.
On the 5th of November 2009, Berlin hosted the MTV European Music Awards. The EMAs will took place in the O2 World Arena. The show was presented by Katy Perry with support from Pete Wentz as a digital host. Among the guest presenters announcing the winners were actress and singer Juliet Lewis from Juliet and The Licks, The Backstreet Boys, wrestler Batista, German ex-tennis player Boris Becker, actor Jean Reno, singer Joss Stone and the Jonas Brothers.
A stroke of good luck meant we were in the right place at the right time and acquired free tickets whilst standing outside the arena, and the show was a big hit. Green Day and Foo Fighters rocked the stage, playing two songs each to the live audience. Foo Fighters new Tom Petty like hit, Wheels, was followed by my all time favourite "All My Life", while Green Day blasted out "Minority" after their recent hit, "Know Your Enemy". Also performing were Tokio Hotel, Jay-Z, Shakira, and Leona Lewis.
The dedicated MTV EMA website is still in operation. Information on more events at the O2 World Arena are available on the purchase tickets for the EMAs in Berlin O2 World website.

60 Years of the Federal Republic of Germany
Celebrations in Berlin
On 23 May 2009, Germany was 60 years old. The 23 May 1949 marked the beginning of a permanent democracy and the establishment of the state of the Federal Republic of Germany. The 60 Year Celebrations took place around the Brandendurg gate tomorrow between 10am and 10pm, with two stages featuring an orchestra and up and coming musicians and bands such as Udo Jürgens, PURE, 17 Hippies, Otto & The Friesenjungs, The BossHoss.Information about Germany and its institutions was available on the day in tents along the stretch of Strasse des 17.Juni near Brandenburg Gate. Altogether more than 80 Institutions were represented, including Federal Ministries, the Bundestag, the Bundesrat, the Bundesverfassungsgericht, all 16 Federal States of Germany, as well as social organisations. Some of Germany's European neighbours were also guests at the event.
Between 5:30pm and 7pm the Citizens of Berlin State Chapel performed Beethoven's Ninth Symphony "The Ode to the Joy", under the direction of Daniel Barenboim, at the Brandenburg Gate, whilst the Choir of the State Opera performed on Unter den Linden.
Food and drink was available at the celebrations. More information about the program of events and featured institutions was available in this section of Berlin.de, although this particular info only appeared to be available in German.
Muse - Live in Berlin at the O2 World Arena - The Resistance Tour
Live Music in Berlin

On October 29, 2009 Muse played the O2 World Arena in Berlin. From my experience, having seen them play live 5 times, Muse have never played a bad gig, injecting originality and energy into every song at every show I've ever seen them play, with plenty of musical ad-lib and interaction with the crowd. Interraction, not so much in words, but through well-planned but heart-felt solos played to the crowd, not at the crowd, intertwined between their big hits, communicating their message to the crowd through amazing musical ability and brilliant visual effects. Unfortunately I couldn't make it to this gig, but apparently, true to form, the gig went down as a major success, the fans who were there giving it a big thumbs up on the Muse forum.
