Bermuda

Bermuda, a British territory, is known for it's mild weather, pink sand beaches, colorful cottages, and blue skies.

It's made up of over 100 islands. The mainland is comprised of the 6 largest islands, Ireland Island, Boaz Island, Somerset Island, Great Bermuda, St. George's Island & Saint David's Island which are connected to each other by bridges. They occupy about twenty square miles.

Bermuda is just a two hour flight from most US East Coast cities.

Where to Stay

9 Beaches in Sandys Bermuda

We went when they first opened in May of 2005 and really enjoyed it here. Think "upscale camping".

9 Beaches is a casual resort with 18 private waterfront acres on the western-most tip of Bermuda. They offer 84 soft-sided cabanas that sit on stilts and all have a view of the Atlantic ocean. A few are built out over the water and have plexi-glass windows in the floor so you can see the water and maybe some tropical fish swim by.

Getting Around

You can't rent a car in Bermuda. You can either walk, take a bus, ferry, a taxi, or, the most convenient, you can rent a scooter. Many vacationers opt to rent scooters.

We like like renting from Oleander Cycles. They have 6 locations around Bermuda so you can choose which is the most convenient for where you are staying. The one we rented ours from had a test track so you could try it out before you rented it. We just got one for the two of us. I didn't want to drive so I sat in back while my husband drove. Helmets come with the rental.

Gibb's Hill Lighthouse

Gibb's Hill Lighthouse in Southampton Bermuda.

This Lighthouse is one of the few in the world made of cast iron as steel was not available at the time of it's construction in 1844. The lighthouse is 117 feet tall from base to light and it sits on a hill on which is 245 feet above sea level. Ships that are 40 miles away can see it. There are 185 steps to the top, though when we were there the public wasn't allowed to climb all the way up.

Tea Room
Open 7 days a week serving Breakfast from 9 - 11:30 and Lunch from 11:30 - 5:00. Dinner served Wednesday - Sunday from 5:00 - 7:30.
It's closed in the month of January.

Gift Shop
It's also open 7 days a week 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m..
Closed in the month of February.

Royal Naval Dockyard

Two of my favorite things about the Dockyard are the Rum Cakes and the Art Glass. I think it's worth the trip all the way out to the western end of the Bermuda Islands no matter which part of Bermuda you are staying on.

The Bermuda Rum Cake Company

The bakery, which opened in June 200, is built inside an old machine shop. You can watch the bakers at work, try some free samples and pick up a few cakes to bring back home with you. They are so good! Ou have to try all of their flavors. I think my favorites were the Rum Swizzle and Banana. There is also Traditional (Vanilla), Chocolate, Rum and Ginger, Coconut and Classic Coffee. Each of them are made with Bermuda Black Seal Rum.

Dockyard Glassworks

Dockyard Glassworks opened in September 1999 and shares the same building as The Bermuda Rum Cake Company. You can watch glass blowing demonstrations and browse their gift shop. They manufacture beautiful hand made art glass items. You will find decorative plates, bowls, vases, jewelry, paperweights and various sculptures. I couldn't go home empty handed so I bought myself a souvenir. A pendant on a rope cord. It was made by Bermuda born artist Chrissie Howarth, and looking at the website, she is still there today.

I've never been to any of the island nations, but I have lived in the country of Panama, so I understand tropical weather. I think I'd like to visit the lighthouse the most, because I'm not a beachcomber and there's something hauntingly serene about lighthouses.
