Great collection of books. I actually wasn't expecting too much from this lens but was very pleasantly surprised by what I found, good job!

i dont like stereotypes... i recently read a book about ryokans...was very interesting as it gave additional info on japanese culture
  • California_Dreamin Jan 18, 2011 @ 10:25 pm | delete
Yeah, ryokans are an interesting, and revealing, aspect of Japanese culture. Their great places to stay if you're visiting Japan and want a taste of traditional culture. They're not good though if you were hoping to laze away the morning in your futon. The staff will come in and--politely--kick you out of said futon because they have to roll it up and serve you breakfast.

Wonderful Japan collection 5*. I love the layout of your lens.

I'm not familiar with the first book you mentioned, but it sounds like it would be a good book to read for someone who is involved in high-level business or political negotiation in Japan, because it's true that a different logic does apply. I am familiar with the second book you mentioned, (by Ivan Morris) and yeah, I agree with you, it points out a very important aspect of Japanese culture. [in reply to FlorenceArt]

What a great lens. I will have to favorite it and go back to it as there are many books that I haven't read here.

When I was preparing to move to Japan over 10 years ago, I read several book. The one that I think was most useful to me was a small book called The Japanese Negotiator: Subtlety and Strategy Beyond Western Logic. It's a bit old and I don't know if you can still find it, I found it very insightful.

An even older book that I read when I was a student is The Nobility of Failure: Tragic Heroes in the History of Japan. I found it fascinating and it brings light on some important aspects of the Japanese culture I think.

Having hosted many Japanese exchange students in my home, and having visiied that beautiful country, I can understand its attraction. I also remember meeting several Americans and Canadians that were there to teach english, just like you. You have a beautiful and very informative lens, it makes me want to return for another trip. I like your colorful boxes, which html code did you use? 5*s

I am always interested in learning about other countries. I have a Japanese friend now .. a young girl who came to Canada as a foreign student. As you said, it is quite easy to learn the spoken language but to read it, is a totally different matter. You have a wonderful lens here and I look forward to reading many more from you. 5*s, favorite and fan.

A fantastic selection of books you have here, a couple of which I have actually read. I am more of a fiction reader though and there is one writer whom I felt did the most amazing job in depicting the psyche of feudal Japan. If you have never read "SHOGUN" by James Clavell, I highly recommend it. 5 stars for this lens.

The fairy tale book is great. Japan has a tradition of fairy tales just as rich as Europe does, and this is the best collection of them that I've found in English. [in reply to Evelyn_Saenz]

Going to Japan has been one of my dreams. With all these book suggestions I will be able to go to Japan at least in my mind. The little book on Japanese Fairy Tales especially intrigues me.
