Free Online Role Playing Games

A list of best free mmorpgs, with reviews.

Massively multiplayer online role playing games (MMORPGs) are one of my favorite types of games. I've tried so many online games I've lost count, including the mighty World of Warcraft, and the mature rated Age of Conan. Some I loved, some I didn't, and sometimes I write reviews and guides for them. Here are the best free multiplayer online games in my experience.

Dungeons & Dragons Online Unlimited

Dungeons & Dragons Online began as a pay to play MMORPG and recently relaunched as a free to play. After all the games online that try in some way to be pale shades of the original multiplayer role playing game, it was fantastic to play the real thing. Online. Massively multiplayer.

It's not easy to play solo, though they do have some allowances for it. You're able to hire non-player character hirelings in the essential classes, or you can choose a solo setting on your dungeon (at least, in the beginning areas where I've been so far). This is really a game best enjoyed with a friend or group of friends, though. Just like D & D.

It was an odd and refreshing change to spend hours in the game and not level. I'd almost forgotten what that felt like. It's one of those flags that lets old school D & D players know they're playing a real D & D game. Another such flag can be found in the dungeons, where you run into actual puzzles. I would imagine, though, that for those without the patience or background to really enjoy the role play and the things that D & D players love about the game, it will just frustrate them and they'll soon bounce to another game.

Dungeon Fighter Online

Dungeon Fighter Online is brought to us by Nexon (the people who brought us Maplestory and Mabinogi), and it's fun! A side-scrolling, arcade-style 2D fighting MMO, well worth the time to check out.

Atlantica Online

Atlantica Online is a strategic, turnbased MMORPG. Along your way you acquire or unlock mercenaries who become your little army. Ultimately, you will be able to use 8 mercenaries in addition to your main character, in a 3 by 3 configuration.

The world is vast, and fairly open. Lots to explore. And it's lovely.

Ether Saga

Ether Saga has an anime look, but it's not cookie-cutter anime. I found the art really lush and beautiful. You can choose one of three races to play, and each starts with its own beginning pet that can fight beside you in battle.

Other pets will be given as quest rewards, and at level 15 you'll be able to capture your own. The sheer variety of pets makes this an interesting game to check out. It's not every day you find a game that lets you tame a monkey.

Mabinogi

Mabinogi is a really unusual game, period, not just an unusual mmorpg. Let me count the ways:

It's based on the (Welsh) Mabinogion.

There are no classes. You can use melee, magic, and bowman skills on the same character. In fact, you'd probably better, if you want to be serious about dungeoning.

The difficulty of the dungeons depends far more on your skill as a player, and your character's abilities, than it does on level.

The crafting systems are well developed and if you want to, you can have a character that does almost nothing but that. In fact, characters can earn experience points and level up without leaving town, or fighting.

Maplestory

Maplestory is a long-running, fun 2D sidescrolling MMORPG with some unusual classes, like the pirate, the Cygnus Knights, and the cleric whose heal ability harms undead enemies (so it's not rubbish for a primarily solo player to play).

Kingdom Heroes

Kingdom Heroes is the most recent good free MMORPG I've played. Based on the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, players choose to serve one of the historical generals from the book. There are scheduled Kingdom Wars in which factions and guilds battle for territory, and the map can change greatly from week to week as a result of the last Kingdom War.

Otherwise, PVP is primarily in the Arena, and the PVE gives you a lot to do not only in quests but daily tasks that can be done for guild favor and XP. The official forums are full of great information so if you check it out, don't miss those.

Each class can command a number of soldiers, who can be set to auto attack. Botting will get you banned, but AFK leveling by setting your soldiers to auto attack in a safe place was acceptable at the time I played.

What do I mean by safe place? The game has frequent boss spawns, who can be farmed for better gear, but it's not a good idea to afk where they may spawn unless your soldiers are very high level and very capable.

Each faction has a safe training ground where no bosses spawn, which can be used to level quickly from level 1 to about level 70. Players are sent there in their early quests so watch for it. It makes leveling up much faster.
