Jigsaw Puzzles of Jane Wooster Scott

Jane Wooster Scott puzzles offer the puzzler several mini-scenes to assemble within the puzzle picture. A blue house, a green house, a horse drawn carriage - these are all examples of sections that can be sorted out and assembled helping the puzzler along the task of reforming the picture.

Level of difficulty and time required to assemble these amazing puzzles depends upon the quantity of puzzle pieces, size of the puzzle and color usage within the picture. My personal favorite piece count for these puzzles is 300-500 pieces. No matter what your skill level, the resulting solved puzzle will keep your eyes moving from scene to scene continually telling new stories.

If a picture/painting is worth a thousand words, then the artwork of Jane Wooster Scott is worth one hundred thousand.

Who is Jane Wooster Scott?

A painter of Americana would be the simplest answer. But what her paintings represent and bring to our memories is so much more. She reminds us of wonderful times, celebrations and simple pleasures of the past.

Her paintings are of early 20th century America. Any one painting is a mix of many small scenes. You'll find beautiful country houses, friends interacting, and horse drawn carriages.

Surprisingly, most of her paintings are not from real scenes. They are from her own thoughts with consideration for composition and the joy of color.

My favorite scenes are these, snow covered houses and skiers on ice. Do you see the boy's scarf whipping in the wind? That is the kind of detail that makes a great puzzle!

100 piece puzzles - 1000 piece puzzles

How many pieces is best?

In my opinion, it's around 500 for an adult. Many puzzles are 550 pieces which is a great size too. 300 pieces is wonderful if you want a shorter stint. And if you are working with a child 8-12ish a 300 piece puzzle is perfect. A 1000 piece puzzle requires help, time and commitment (and space to leave it out to be worked on!). Jane Wooster Scott offers 300's, 550's and 1000 piece puzzles.

I remember when my daughter was very young and she "graduated" from very simple puzzles up to 100 piece puzzles. We had (and still have) a 100 piece puzzle with quilts on it. She put it together over and over again. Then to be challenged, she put it together IN ORDER from top left to bottom right. Then put it together by rows horizontally then vertically. I probably, at that point, could have given her a 300 piece puzzle for us to work on together. From time to time she will still get out that 100 piece puzzle and put it together in a flash!

What's your opinion?

I see many puzzles by these three artists who can be described as folk artists or painters of Americana. I know you now have seen puzzles by Jane Wooster Scott, but have you seen or assembled puzzles by the other two?

This 4 pack of puzzles is what I'm working on right now

Update: 1 puzzle completed

I've just completed the puzzle in the lower right corner of the box. The completed picture is stunning - see photo below. It was a little harder than I first thought - I think the puzzle in the upper left will be easier because the houses are larger. That yellow house should be a cinch to complete.

One more thing...

While studying for this article, I noticed a little black and white dog in many of the puzzle scenes. I wondered about the significance of this little dog then stumbled across this book. The mystery is solved! It's Mitzi and there's a book about her. The Product Description states: Young readers will enjoy following Mitzi, the spotted dog with a red collar, through all four seasons of the year as she explores the towns, farms, and countryside of America, vividly brought to life by folk artist Jane Wooster Scott.

These detailed and colourful paintings look ideal for a fun jigsaw. I'd start with the edges and I like the challenge of 1000 pieces but 500 are just right when you are puzzling to relax and enjoy the satisfaction of finishing without too much frustration along the way.

I agree, 500 pieces of a detailed puzzle is a good working size. A puzzle like Jane Wooster Scott's is irresistable to me, I love the color and movement!

I like Jane Wooster prints and puzzles too, but second to Wysocki's. But they are both excellent and some of my favorite puzzles and prints. I like your taste in artistry.

Ha I have prints of signed Wooster Scott on both sides of me right now. I thought Wooster was a man for the twenty year's they have hung here. Bought them at a preschool art auction fund raiser. I just love them. Should find out what they are worth now. Your lens is very attractive. 5*

Winter time at home was a time when we always had a puzzle going when I was young. I still have a closet full of really nice ones. (I parted with some I didn't like as well.) I now do puzzles on the computer when I have time. You can save them so don't need to do it all in one sitting. I have found a retirement home where the puzzles I have saved are now going to go to. Someone may as well be enjoying them. 5*s and fav.
