When I first started trying to increase my vertical I sought out the advice of a friend of mine that's a personal trainer. I lamely asked - "what's the best way to increase vertical jump height?" He instructed me to do high repetition endurance style weightlifting. It didn't work very well, the problem was he had me training muscle stamina - not explosion. Getting an insane vertical requires creating explosion or explosive power. Explosive power is made up of 2 components - speed and strength. You can substantially increase your speed and strength by including lifts in your routine that require both. Training for explosion requires you to focus on intensity, slow negatives and fast positives - what does that all mean? Well, say you're doing a power clean - you would slowly lower the weight until you reach the bottom of the movement and then explode upwards as hard and fast as possible! This type of lifting is very demanding and should be performed at low, but intense reps. The goal is to work as closely to your one rep max as possible.

Remember, we want to be focusing on slow negatives and fast, explosive positives on each repetition. Start out light until you're comfortable and then work your way up to heavy weights. Try and spread each of these exercises over 3-4 days to avoid over-training!
