Best Dental Plans - Discount Dental Plans vs Dental Insurance - Which Is Best?

I've had a lot of people ask me which of these is the best way to go when you're in need of dental care and it just so happens that I had the same question myself a couple years back. That is, untilĀ I spoke to an agent in Scottsdale, Arizona who explained exactly what the differences were and why one of these is a winner by a landslide. Allow me to explain....

Big Discount Dental Plans vs Dental Insurance

Which Dental Plan Really Offers The Best Care?

Big Discount Dental Plans or dental insurance? This question has been a hot topic since the first discount plan was offered back in the mid 1990's. The first impression that most people got was that discount dental plans MUST be a scam, because they weren't insurance. However, as time went on a lot of folks actually began to see the benefit of owning a discount plan. Let's compare the two plans.

Dental Insurance

Dental insurance is a policy that is designed mostly as a preventive plan. That means that the majority of your basic needs will be covered, after you've paid your insurance premium and deductible.

Your "basic" needs include things like cleanings, x-rays, fluoride treatments and most other preventive maintenance types of care.

Unfortunately, if you are in need of major dental care or you are in pain right now, you're on your own because dental insurance does not cover what are known as "pre-existing" conditions. This means that if you know that you need a root canal you'll have to pay for it yourself because the insurance company would consider that condition pre-existing, until after you've owned the policy for at least one year. This is what's known as a "waiting" period and it's mandatory for all new policy owners.

The bad news is that even after your waiting period is over you'll still have to pay for most of it yourself. The insurance will gradually scale up your coverage each year, but your first year will probably only get you around 10% coverage. This will likely increase to 25% in the 3rd year, 50% in the 4th and so on.

Discount Dental Plans

These plans do not provide insurance coverage. They are only designed to provide big discounts on dental care, as long as you visit one of the participating dental providers and pay the discounted fee in full at the time of the appointment.

Most discounts range from 10% to 60%, depending on the procedure you need done, the discount plan you choose and the area in which you live.

Discount plans do not discriminate so all ages are welcome, there are no waiting periods, pre-existing conditions are fine, no exclusions and some, not all, but some even offer discounts on cosmetic dentistry.

Our Conclusion

If you are in pain and need to see a dentist right away, dental discount plans win hands down. In fact, it's really no contest.

Affordable Dentures

Save Big On Dentures By Joining A Dental Discount Plan

Are you in need of new dentures? They're not cheap, are they? Actually, a new set of upper dentures alone will cost you over $1250. That figure is based on national averages, your area may be more or less.

So how do you get around having to pay that much for new dentures if a new dental insurance policy won't cover you? The answer is to join a dental discount plan. Unlike dental insurance, discount plans do offer savings on pre-existing conditions. This means that if you need dentures you can join a plan and see a dentist in no more than three days.

I've seen savings as high as 60% off the cost of upper dentures, however, it may be less where you live. These plans offer discounts between 10-60%, although the savings on dentures is usually higher.

So if you're in need of Affordable Dentures you really should look into getting a dental discount plan first. It would be a shame if you paid full price when it wasn't necessary.
