Best People Movies
Some win oscars, some don't even appear on other best lists. Some have romance in them but it shouldn't be the central theme. Some have an action hero - although that's less likely, since there's often no access to special fx and no need to use them to draw in an attention-deficient audience.
Many are slow starters and only get going when you realise something's amiss. Take Little Children as an example. There's no car chases (not that I can remember anyway), there's a little romance (but it hardly counts as that), but there is a lot of tension in how all the characters act.
1) Black Snake Moan
Expect a twisted storyline with great and captivating performances. Everybody acts outside of their normal range. Jackson's character is a simple-living, age-wizened bluesman. He surprises with powerful deep-south blues. But the blues isn't the only thing he's passionate about. He's as god-fearing as you can get.
Ricci's character is about as opposite Jackson's as possible. She has a troubled, abused background and expects that in her current life.
Add to that Justin Timberlake playing a great supporting role.
This is a movie centred on human interaction, crossing with issues of morality, salvation and hope.
