Hunting The Best Wireless Mouse

The advent of wireless may probably not be the last great revolution in computer technology but, as far as end-user convenience and experience are concerned, it sure sounds pretty close to it. Just think of the millions of square inches of desk space that the introduction of the wireless mouse and keyboard has freed up. Not to mention the gazillions of miles of often pesky wiring. And you can't really blame all those notebook users who're always on the go who consider the wireless mouse nothing short of a gift from heaven.

But of course, not all mice are created equal. There will always be a select few that will stand out and justifiably lay claim to the title of best wireless mouse. Well, until the next generation of mice come along anyway.

There'll be those who'll swear the Logitech Wireless Performance Mouse MX is the best mouse ever. And they'd be right. But so, too, would those who point to the Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 6000.

We have to admit, though, that with the Performance Mouse's ability to track on clear glass (well, granting that it's at least four millimeters thick), courtesy of its Darkfield sensor, Logitech can be fairly judged to be ahead by a proverbial whisker. But then, who wants to track on glass? Good question. Until you find yourself seated at a glass-topped café table needing to get some work done pronto. It also helps that the Logitech Wireless Performance Mouse MX is rechargeable and that you can use it even while recharging, and that its plug and forget nanoreceiver works with other Logitech's family of Unifying devices.

But make no mistake about it. Even without the glass tracking, the Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 6000 is no pushover either. Microsoft's Blue Track sensor, with its wider light beam that allows it to track over rough surfaces like cloth, carpets or even bark, plus convenient buttons and an accurate mouse wheel that also functions as a fifth button make this a sweet device. And for roughly half the price of the Performance Mouse, one would be really tempted to say, indeed, who tracks on glass anyway?

But lest you think this is a face-off between the Performance Mouse and the Mobile Mouse 6000, there are still a few mice that have earned the bragging rights to being considered the best wireless mouse.

Hands up for the Logitech Wireless Anywhere Mouse MX anyone? When Logitech calls this a mouse for anywhere, it sure means it. The Anywhere Mouse is the mobile version of the Logitech Wireless Performance Mouse MX and also uses the Darkfield laser and the Unifying receiver device, which is really a nifty device since it is small enough to plug into your notebook and leave it there without worrying about snagging into things when you need to move around.

For such a tiny creature, the Logitech Wireless Anywhere Mouse MX has a superbly contoured body that fits most hands and its buttons are conveniently placed where your thumb can easily get to them for truly easy surfing on the go.

Rounding off our peek at the best wireless tracking device of the moment are two notebook mice from Microsoft and Logitech.

The Microsoft Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse 3000 is the perfect mobile tracking device for folks who just have to keep working on the go. Introduced in 2004, it can be considered a classic given the really short shelf life of computers and their peripherals. Small enough to fit into a jacket pocket, it's a true plug and play device, and a no-nonsense tool with just two buttons and a wheel.

The Logitech Wireless Mouse M305 is one tough little mouse that perfectly delivers what a mouse should, reliable tracking. No fancy features on this one. It won't break any speed records either. But it's a pure working device beautiful in its simplicity. And it's so durable you don't have to worry much about it occasionally flying from your hand when you over-track from a really small surface. This mouse can take its lumps.

It shouldn't be all that surprising that all you see here are Microsoft and Logitech. These two companies have long been trying to outdo each other to produce the best mouse. All we have to say is, may the competition last forever, because our mice can only get better. As for which of these is the best wireless mouse, what it really boils down to is what you need to use it for and how much you're willing to shell out.
