Hockey goalie leg pads serve multiple purposes.

They obviously protect your legs in the event of an impact, but also:

*Provide knee protection (when in the butterfly/profly maneuver) via their integrated knee lifts/wings (on most modern pads)

*Control rebounds (due to dual density foams and "flat face" in most modern pads)

If you are a standup goalie you may want to keep the pads "snugger" on your legs than a hybrid (up on high, down on low shots), or butterfly/profly goalie.

When buying hockey goalie pads, you can "generally" size them by measuring from your inside ankle across to the middle of your knee and double that measurement to get in the ballpark for your right size pad.

More specifically, you will need the following measurements to more accurately size hockey goalie pads for yourself:

First, your skate size.
Second, measure from the inside ankle bone up to the center of the kneecap with your leg bent slightly forward.
Third, measure from the center of your kneecap to the desired height on your thigh.
This measurement will be somewhere between 6 and 9 inches, depending on your thigh rise preference.

Add these three measurements together for your hockey goal pad
size. Ideally, your knee with fit in the middle of the knee cradle.
