Why I want to read Best Friends Forever

Best Friends Forever by Jennifer Weiner caught my eye at the book store because of the cute title, which I think says a lot about what this story might involve, and the simple bookcover artwork.

After reading a synopsis, I've decided that I think this book would make a great lazy-day-at-the beach read. It has everything a good piece of Chick Lit should have, best friends, a fun and exciting story line, a good helping of wit along with a dash of wisdom.

Mind you, my normal favorite genre to read is horror, except during those special days when my toes are sifting sand and my head is in the clouds at the shore. Ghosties, demons, and blood-sucking soldiers just seem so out-of-place when the sun is shining so bright and warm upon my face.

There's just something about reading Chick Lit at the beach that I can't resist. I like to keep the monsters at home - in the dark - under my bed - for those long nights when I don't want to sleep very much!

I'm going to ask several of my girlfriends including, Bonnie, Patti, Kathy, Sharon and Marie to join me in reading Best Friends Forever this summer.

Care to pull up a beach chair and join us?

A Synopsis of Best Friends Forever

"Some bonds can never be broken"..

At nine years of age, Addie Downs and Valerie Adler claim that they will be best friends forever. Things change dratically in high school where one girl finds herself the belle of the ball while the other becomes the school's biggest scapegoat.

Fifteen years into the future. Valerie Adler becomes famous while Addie Downs lives alone in her parents' house in their small hometown of Pleasant Ridge, Illinois, caring for her brother and trying to meet Mr. Right on the internet. She returns from one of her bad dates one night to find her long-gone best friend standing there, scared and bloody. "Something horrible has happened," Val tells Addie, "and you're the only one who can help."

"Best Friends Forever is an excitingly funny, heart-warming story about betrayal and loyalty, family history and small-town secrets. It's about living through tragedy, finding love where you least expect it, and the ties that keep best friends together."

Here's What Publisher's Weekly Had to Say About Best Friends Forever

Publishers Weekly

Chick lit doyenne Weiner offers airtight proof that the genre thrives with this clever, sad and sweet turn on Thelma and Louise-style rage. Juggling the politics of broken families, heartbreaking betrayal and shaky self-esteem, two girlhood pals-ugly duckling Addie and wounded beauty Valerie-reconnect after their high school reunion, where Valerie exacts a long-in-coming revenge on smug former beau Dan Swansea. But the payback gets more complicated when police chief Jordan Novick, nursing a broken heart and a crush-at-first-sight with Addie, is called in to investigate Dan's disappearance. Along the way, Val and Addie stage what may be the funniest not-quite-heist ever pulled off as they evade the heat over the missing Dan. The big payoff, of course, is that Addie and Valerie mend the mean-girls misunderstanding that drove them apart as teens and discover the shared pain and loss that bound them as kids and, once again, as adults. This beach read will win readers over with its wit and wisdom. (July)

Love to! Looks like a great book!

LoKackl says:

I ditto and smile very big over "leap from horror to chick lit" - So reassuring just when I'm having one of my "either it's me or the world but we're just too weird for each other" days. RMS you have a friend-for-life. And, yep the book looks great.

Sorry, I'm not interested in Chick Lit.

sandyspider says:

I have to be in the mood for Chick Lit. But it looks like a good book, if I was into it.

MeganCasey says:

I'm still busy being amused that your usual genre of choice is horror... and that you're making the leap to chick lit in this case. And what a leap it is! I won't be reading the book with you guys but love the online book club experiment you've got going. Pretty cool. Let us know how it goes!
