Play Along withThe Best of the 80's New Wave from A to Z

Thank you for visiting!

From the lens The Best of the 80's New Wave Music - A to Z.

Okay, this is your chance to play along with the Best of the 80's New Wave Music from A to Z.

The rule is that there can only be 5 artists per alphabet letter.

Some of the letters are full. Some, not so full.

I want only the best of the best 80's New Wave artists listed here so leave me the names of your favorite artists who aren't listed.

BUT . . . If you are suggesting someone with an initial that is already full, you'll have to tell me who I need to remove and why your choice is better!

  • Blonde_Blythe May 4, 2012 @ 8:53 pm | delete
No suggestions, only praise--GREAT LENS! 80s NEW WAVE ROCKS!!! :)
  • LakeshoreTara Apr 23, 2012 @ 11:35 pm | delete
One more band should be added to your list - The Boomtown Rats
... you already have 5 under B, so from the listed choices, I would remove Berlin, after all, Bob Geldof is much more talented and songs such as "I don't like Mondays" need to be noted in an 80's list!
  • LakeshoreTara Apr 23, 2012 @ 11:19 pm | delete
This is a great list... I am going to suggest a group for M - even though this band only released one record, I feel that this one-hit wonder is definitely worth mentioning... MARRS (pump up the volume - I love that tune!)

    Hello,
Very interesting lens! I have SquidLinked your lens in my lens : http://www.squidoo.com/lost-bands-of-the-80s-1-nu-shooz

  • cvmorris88 Feb 27, 2012 @ 8:45 am | delete
For your list, how about: tears for fears, tones on tail, I know B is full but bauhaus was far more influential than big country (as much as I love them), Culture club, siouxsie and the banchees, P.I.L, Fine young cannibals, The Smiths, Wham! UK, X, sex pistols, toy dolls, nina hagen, Oingo boingo, INXS, Wall of Voodoo, the english beat, general public, the untouchables, fishbone. I realize some of these are local LA bands with a punk or ska flair, but they are what we were listening to along with the new wave. What a fun site! Thanks

I am definitely a child of the 80s! And I love the music, especially New Wave. I'm just glad to see DEVO on the list -- clearly the greatest band of all time. They're still going strong, and I'm going to be putting up a lens soon devoted to them. Watch for it!

  • Hans Kompis Jan 6, 2012 @ 3:07 pm | delete
The Associaton was better than any of the chosen artists beginning with A. If there is one album which defines what the new wave was all about it must be Associations Sulk from 1982. Just check from youtube their top of the pops performances of songs Party fears two and Country club.
  • JSchaper Jan 6, 2012 @ 8:12 am | delete
I was only a boy in the 80's, but some of these songs still bring back memories.

Also, Vh1 recently called Devo, XTC, and Numan one-hit wonders. Who else disagrees?

I grew up in the 1980's and to this day my favorite music is from this decade. Some of my favorite bands are New Order, The Smiths, and The Cure. They say the music you will remember the most is what you listened to between the ages of 9-19. This holds true for me as I was 9 in 1980 and 19 in 1990.
  • Rankography Aug 30, 2011 @ 8:07 am | delete
Nice lens. I love 80s music. Looks like you might be missing one of my favorites, Tears for Fears.

Great list! Here are some suggestions to fill up "C": Cheap Trick, Elivis Costello, and - of course - Culture Club. Who can forget Boy George? If I had to pick, though, I'd say Elvis was the best of those three. So that's my vote!
  • mrsphillips200 May 15, 2011 @ 4:29 pm | delete
Yay XTC! Love them. Where are Tears for Fears, though? Same with Talking Heads, Wall of Voodoo, diVynils, etc. Still, over all, great list, just a few ones missing.

I heard a song back in the mid 80's,it had a lot of synth and sounded like a cross between old Cure and A Flock of Seagulls. The ending lyrics were "I made a deal with the devil,I made a little deal. I've been trying to find this song for a while. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
  • AllPurposePapoon Jan 18, 2011 @ 12:24 am | delete
Yes, the 80's was the decade of music videos. My favorite video of all time has to be "Sledgehammer" by Peter Gabriel. "Money for Nothing" is a close second because it has "I want my MTV" in the lyrics. Added this to lenses I like.
  • faithfuljim Jan 13, 2011 @ 11:01 am | delete
Verry interesting. I came here on my Herman the Merman quest. I'm not familiar with much of the 80's music, since I got stuck in the 60's with the folk revival. You need to add some YouTube modules to give viewers like me a chance to hear some of the music. I was expecting to hear some so I could hear what I missed. You definately need to add some YouTube modules.

No Duran Duran, Culture Club, Billy Idol, Flock of Seagulls or Wham!? Those are the bands I think of when I think 80s music.

Love & Rockets but no Bauhaus?

Such a variety of music to choose from. Great job.

BTW I think Bono would have a cow if he saw U2 on this list. They considered themselves punk at the time. Go figure.

For those of you who dont know it or dont remember it......it was in the movie 16 Candles and was playing when Molly Ringwald went into the coat room at the dance to tell Jake that she loved him....and couldnt!!! I definitely reccomend this as one of the Divinyls Greatest songs!!!

I'm in shock. I looked in the E's for Elvis, the C's for Costello (even the D's and M's for his real name, Declan McManus). Where, oh where, is Elvis Costello?!?! Then I hit the S's and was in for another shock: NO SQUEEZE? How can you even HAVE a New Wave list without Squeeze? Oh, the humanity ...

But even with those sad lacks, this is a great lens! Lots of memories! 5*****

This lens is acually so full of good music-names. I like Yanni too. Enya is also not to be forgotten.
Thank you for a lot of suggestions!

Love it and now I'm singing Too Shy in my head, I had forgotten all about Kajagoogoo. It's funny how I would never admit to knowing the words in the 80s as I was just way too cool to be singing Too Shy, but now......I think I'll go and embarrass/educate my daughter on 80s music. (I'm so mean)

I love the eighties, five stars for you! May I suggest some of the 70s-80s influences that inspired the music of the eighties? You'll find them at www.squidoo.com/magicalmusic...

Hi rms, I love the 80's. Some believe that rock was at its peak in the 80's. I still listen to most of the bands you have on your enormous list. If you want a couple more candidates, you might consider The Police and The Cars. Some refer to the later is the king of new wave. ~Music-Resource~

Thank you Book Garden. Zodiac Mindwarp has been added!
  • The_Book_Garden Oct 15, 2007 @ 5:18 pm | delete
I would have put Zodiac Mindwarp as a Z, rather than Genesis, neither is really new wave, but zodiac was far cooler! ;)
    Great work here though!
