Did you know a penny can be worth a LOT more than a penny? How about a penny worth 7,300,000 pennies? Yep, recently a 1943 S penny was sold at auction for $73,000. Think that's the only valuable penny out there? How about the 1955 double die worth an estimated $27,000. Or the 1909 S VDB which sells for around $7000 on eBay. There aren't a lot of rare nickels and they are all fairly inexpensive. These two facts makes them a great coin for the beginner or those with a modest budget to collect.

You can put together a nice collection without spending a ton of money. In fact, a lot of the Jefferson Nickels can still be found in circulation.

Most people are familiar with the State Quarters program that the mint started a few years back, but that only added fuel to an already well loved coin. And the recent high prices of silver means that even badly beat up pre-1964 silver quarters are worth as much as $3.00. Quarters are also a favorite among youngsters.

 

Ah the half dollars. This was my personal entry into coin collecting as an adult. It started with circulated silver halves. I'd go to every bank in town buying all their half dollars then take them home and go on a personal treasure hunt seeking out silver halves that were still in circulation. Even on the rare occasions I didn't find any silver coins, the hunt always made it worth the effort.

 

With the current prices of silver and gold, many people have begun investing in silver. Gold can be so expensive as to be out of reach for those without deep pockets, but silver can be had by most.
